General Charles Vallancey FRS (6 April 1731 – 8 August 1812) was a British military surveyor sent to Ireland. He remained there and became an authority on Irish antiquities. Some of his theories would be rejected today, but his drawings, for example, were pain-stakingly accurate compared to existent artefacts. Other drawings, such as his diagram of the banquet hall at Tara, and the lost crown of the High King of Ireland, are unverifiable, as the manuscripts and material he used, no longer exist.

  • Suirbhéir míleata Briotanach a d'oibrigh in Éirinn ab ea an Ginearál Charles Vallancey (6 Aibreán 1731 – 8 Lúnasa 1812). Chuir sé an-spéis sa Ghaeilge agus i seaniarsmaí na hÉireann, agus scríobh sé go leor leabhar agus páipéar ar na hábhair seo. Chomh fada siar leis an 19ú haois, aithníodh go forleathan nach raibh mórán fiúntais in obair acadúil Vallancey, go háirithe a chuid teoiricí áiféiseacha maidir le stair agus sanasaíocht na Gaeilge. Mar sin féin, tugtar creidiúint dó as treabhadh chun cinn sa réimse seo nuair nach raibh mórán spéise ann, agus aird scoláirí níos cúramaí a tharraingt air sna blianta i ndiaidh a bháis. (ga)
