Il suo ciclo vitale biologico consiste nel depositare una larva endoparassita in un ospite vivente che emergerà poi violentemente da questi dopo un breve periodo di sviluppo, per poi rapidamente diventare adulto. L'aspetto e il ciclo vitale dello Xenomorfo, nell'arco delle sue apparizioni, ha subìto modifiche ed espansioni, a volte incoerenti. L'aspetto venne ideato dall'artista svizzero H. R.
