- La 41a Mostra Internacional de Cinema de Venècia es va celebrar entre l'1 i l'11 de setembre de 1984 sota la direcció de Gian Luigi Rondi. No es va concedir el Lleó d'Or com a premi a la carrera. El principal esdeveniment de l'edició va ser, fora de competició, l'estrena de , una pel·lícula de gairebé 16 hores dirigida per Edgar Reitz. Entre els altres títols mostrats fora de competició hi havia Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom de Steven Spielberg', The NeverEnding Story de Wolfgang Petersen i la versió restaurada de Metropolis editada per Giorgio Moroder. - The 41st annual Venice International Film Festival was held from 1 to 11 September 1984 under the direction of Gian Luigi Rondi. No Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement was assigned. The main event of this edition was, out of competition, the premiere of Heimat, an almost 16 hours-long film directed by Edgar Reitz. Among the other titles showed out of competition there were Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Wolfgang Petersen's The NeverEnding Story and a restored version of Metropolis edited and scored by Giorgio Moroder. The retrospective was dedicated to Luis Buñuel. (en)

L'evento di questa edizione fu la presentazione, fuori concorso, di Heimat, serie di film diretta da Edgar Reitz in 11 episodi per un totale di quasi 16 ore di proiezione. La retrospettiva fu dedicata a Luis Buñuel. Tra le anteprime notturne fuori concorso, grande affluenza di pubblico fu registrata per La storia infinita, per Indiana Jones e il tempio maledetto e per la riproposta di Metropolis in versione ricolorata con colonna sonora rock, realizzata dal musicista Giorgio Moroder. Jury pod przewodnictwem włoskiego reżysera Michelangelo Antonioniego przyznało nagrodę główną festiwalu, Złotego Lwa, polskiemu filmowi Rok spokojnego słońca w reżyserii Krzysztofa Zanussiego.
