History of CoLInS conference
CoLInS conference grew out of the Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference “Intelligent Systems and Applied Linguistics” (ISAL) which was held by the Intelligent Computer Systems Department (ICS) at National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”.
The main goal of ISAL was to encourage PhD students, students, and young scientists to present to their colleagues and the scientific community the results of their work to make it possible to discuss new challenges and recent developments in computational, mathematical, structural and applied linguistics.
The 1st ISAL took place in March 2012 to celebrate the 5th anniversary of ICS Department. Within 6 years, many Ukrainian and foreign researchers has taken part in the ISAL conference. All papers accepted for ISAL were published in the conference proceedings.
In 2017 the conference has become international, changing the title for “Computer Linguistics and Intelligent Systems” (CoLInS). Since this moment CoLInS has been conducted in cooperation between National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” and Lviv Polytechnic National University (Information Systems and Network Department). In odd years the venue is Kharkiv and even years is Lviv.
The first CoLInS involved 70 researchers with 12 papers accepted, 8 keynote speakers and 2 streams. In subsequent years the number of participants, keynote speakers and papers was being increased (see the table below).
In 2018 Politechnika Śląska and LIMSI-CNRS & Université Paris 13 became co-organizers thus contributing to significant expansion of the international program committee. All the best papers accepted by the program committee have been indexed in SCOPUS, DBLP, and Google Scholar. In 2021 all the conference proceedings of 2018 – 2021 entered Web of Science.
The CoLInS 2019 was divided into 2 Streams and over 70 participants presented their papers. The workshop for students was held too. The organizing committee also offered an opportunity of presenting the paper on Skype for those who wasn’t able to attend the conference physically.
The year of 2020 saw pandemic crisis with the subsequent restrictions on the physical attendance. Due to COVID-19 situation the conference was held online using Zoom platform. To keep within the time limits of the program the video presentations were previously recorded and uploaded on YouTube channel. The CoLInS sessions were also recorded and uploaded after the conference.
In 2021 Ukrainian Lingua-Information Fund, the leading institution in the field of computational linguistics and computer lexicography, became the program committee member and informational partner.
The latest CoLInS 2021 gathered over 480 participants from different countries including Azerbaijan, Germany, India, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Morocco, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine and United Kingdom. The conference was held online as it was in previous year. The sessions of keynote speakers were broadcasted on Facebook page.
