Our partnership with Google Cloud has been a key element of our digital transformation. The proactive support their team brings has allowed us to rethink how we manage costs, make the most of cloud resources, and prepare for the future.
Harish Singh
Vice President and Global Head of Infrastructure and Application Services, Wipro
Since its founding in 1945, Wipro has grown into one of India's largest tech companies, offering information technology and business process services in more than 165 countries. The firm positions itself as a key player in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, driving innovation across artificial intelligence, cloud computing, digital transformation, robotics, and data analytics.
In its early cloud journey, Wipro sought to modernize its operations by migrating its core SAP-based ERP systems to Google Cloud. The transition from an on-premise environment addressed immediate challenges of scalability and agility. But as the use of Google Cloud grew, so did the complexity of managing its cloud environment. To unlock the full potential of cloud technology, Wipro embarked upon a strategic cost optimization program that would become central to its journey with Google Cloud.
"Our partnership with Google Cloud has been a key element of our digital transformation," says Harish Singh, Vice President and Global Head of Infrastructure and Application Services at Wipro. "The proactive support their team brings has allowed us to rethink how we manage costs, make the most of cloud resources and prepare for the future."
As Wipro's cloud adoption matured, the number of workloads on Google Cloud grew rapidly. This expansion that drove innovation also introduced challenges related to cost visibility and resource utilization. Multiple projects and environments created during early phases of cloud adoption remained active but underutilized. This resulted in inefficiencies that pushed up costs and hindered scalability.
A pivotal moment came when the Google Cloud team helped Wipro leverage Recommender tools to conduct a detailed analysis of its cloud environment. These AI-powered solutions provide actionable insights into resource utilization and cost-saving opportunities. By analyzing the usage patterns of Wipro, Recommender identified inefficiencies such as unattached storage disks, idle VMs, unused IPs, idle custom images or unused reservations, and workloads running on suboptimal configurations.
Recommender gave us insights we could act on immediately. It went beyond highlighting inefficiencies to help us prioritize the most impactful optimizations. This was an essential step in creating a cost management framework that aligns with our long-term business objectives.

Vice President and Global Head of Infrastructure and Application Services, Wipro
Armed with these insights, Wipro was able to implement targeted optimizations, including rightsizing virtual machines and automating instance scheduling for non-production environments. Ultimately, Recommender identified multiple projects that could be safely shut down. Closing these projects resulted in annual savings of approximately $500,000, allowing the company to redirect resources to higher-priority goals.
"Recommender gave us insights we could act on immediately," Singh says. "It went beyond highlighting inefficiencies to help us prioritize the most impactful optimizations. This was an essential step in creating a cost management framework that aligns with our long-term business objectives."
The Google Cloud TAM team was instrumental in enabling our success. They worked with us every step of the way, helping us implement best practices and automation that saved costs and enhanced our overall cloud maturity.
Harish Singh
Vice President and Global Head of Infrastructure and Application Services, Wipro
Building on the success of its initial optimizations, Wipro worked closely with the Google Cloud Technical Account Management (TAM) team to design a robust cost management framework. The goal was to embed FinOps principles into the organization’s day-to-day operations, ensuring that cost optimization became a repeatable and sustainable practice instead of a one-off operation.
Wipro shared FinOps best practices across teams to ensure alignment on optimization goals. By instilling these practices, such as using dashboards to enhance cost visibility, the company established a culture of continuous improvement that ensures cost efficiency remains a priority as its cloud environment evolves.
Automation played a critical role in this transformation. According to Singh, Google Cloud supported Wipro in implementing several automated processes to reduce waste and improve efficiency. These included:
Such measures delivered additional annual savings while significantly reducing the manual effort required to manage cloud resources. Overall, the cost optimization strategy of Wipro has achieved multi-million dollar savings, says Singh, freeing up resources to invest in innovation and future growth.
"The Google Cloud TAM team was instrumental in enabling our success," Singh says. "They worked with us every step of the way, helping us implement best practices and automation that saved costs and enhanced our overall cloud maturity.”
The Wipro journey with Google Cloud has also been underpinned by operational benefits. Its cloud infrastructure built around Compute Engine virtual machines has experienced zero downtime since migration to Google Cloud, enabling uninterrupted service delivery. Meanwhile, speed and agility have transformed go-to-market capabilities. For Wipro, provisioning new resources on-premise could take six to eight weeks. Now the process takes just hours, allowing Wipro to accelerate product launches and respond to market demands in real time.
Now Wipro is leveraging its partnership with Google Cloud to explore the transformative potential of generative AI. A key initiative is the deployment of Gemini Code Assist, which automates routine coding tasks and enhances developer productivity. By using this tool, Wipro has improved coding efficiency by 30%, enabling developers to focus on more complex and creative pursuits.
"Our developers are no longer tied up with repetitive tasks," Singh explains. "Tools like Gemini Code Assist have empowered them to take on more strategic initiatives, driving greater value for our clients and unlocking new opportunities for growth."
The impact of generative AI extends beyond software development. Wipro is actively exploring use cases across content creation, personalized marketing, and knowledge management. These initiatives, supported by advanced AI and machine learning capabilities of Google Cloud, are reshaping how Wipro delivers value.
