Davion Thompson, the 2025 Sun-Times Player of the Year, has transferred from Bolingbrook to Link Academy, a prep school in Missouri.

Thompson announced the move on Friday morning by posting a picture of himself in a Link Academy uniform on Instagram.

“He is just trying to get better,” Dennis Thompson, Davion’s dad, told the Sun-Times on Friday. “He wants to play against better competition.”

The 6-3 lefty scoring guard was the first sophomore to win the Sun-Times POY in the award’s 67-year history. Thompson will finish the school year at Bolingbrook and start at Link Academy in August.

“Davion is a great player,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “We wish him and his family nothing but the best moving forward.”

The Thompsons are close friends with the Fears family of Joliet. During their high school careers, Jeremy Fears Jr. and Jeremiah Fears left Joliet West for prep schools.

Thompson averaged 24 points and five rebounds as a sophomore. He had multiple games of more than 30 points and shot 58% on two-point shots, 49% on three-pointers and 90% from the foul line.

Bolingbrook, which began the season as the top-ranked team in the Super 25, lost to Downers Grove North 29-26 in the Class 4A sectional semifinals.

ESPN ranks Thompson as the 22nd best player in the national class of 2027 and 247sports.com has him 32nd. Thompson has scholarship offers from DePaul, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Tennessee and Wake Forest.

Link Academy, located just south of Branson, has sent multiple players to the NBA including Julian Phillips, Jordan Walsh and Ja’Kobe Walter. Former St. Rita star James Brown transferred to Link in 2023 for his senior year.

Thompson was one of three highly-regarded sophomores in the state. Warren’s Jaxson Davis won the Mr. Basketball award and led the Blue Devils to the Class 4A state title game this season.

Devin Cleveland led Kenwood to its first city championship. So far, both players appear to be staying put at their high school, but many top-tier players have left for prep schools over the last decade.
