Remove the middle glass: Lift the middle glass off the stack and set it aside. Move the bottom glass to the top: Lift the bottom glass and place it where the top glass was. Re-stack the middle glass: Place the middle glass on top of the new bottom glass. Re-stack the original top glass: Finally, place the original top glass on top of the stack. Now, you have successfully swapped the bottom glass with the top one.

"A team of roboticists at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, working with a colleague from the University of California, has designed, built and demonstrated a bird-like robot that can launch itself into flight using spring-like legs. The group describes their robot in a paper published in the journal Nature. So, scientists at EPFL have created a tiny device that can turn heat into #electricity at temperatures colder than outer space. Great news for quantum computing, right? But let's think bigger – or should I say, hotter? As our planet continues its journey to become the world's largest sauna, this nifty little gadget might just be the coolest thing since sliced ice, if I may say so myself. Imagine harnessing the heat from your overworked laptop, or better yet, from that colleague who won't stop talking about their weekend plans. Suddenly, every heatwave becomes a potential #power plant, and global warming transforms from a crisis into an opportunity. Of course, scaling this tech from quantum bits to air conditioning units is a bit like trying to cool the Sahara with a single ice cube. But hey, if we can make computers think, surely we can make heat disappear, right? So, while the #quantum folks celebrate their chilly achievement, I'll be here wishing for some hot applications for the rest of us sweaty mortals. After all, in a world that's heating up faster than my morning coffee, a little cool thinking goes a long way.

"FAIR-USE4OS: Guidelines for creating impactful open-source software" just published in PLOS Computational Biology. Thanks to all my co-authors Hugo Gruson Leo Wolansky Agnes Kiragga Daniel S. Katz. Just adding an open-source licence to some code does not mean it's truly accessible and is no guarantee of long-term impact. In this paper we extend the FAIR guidelines to evaluate the usability and accessibility of open-source software by adding USE: User-Centered, Sustainable, Equitable. Ever wonder if the so-called long-context LLMs is really working ? Or just getting lost-in-the-middle ? This new benchmark, LongMemEval, tests the long-term memory of chat assistants. What's in it ? LongMemEval has: - 164 topics, & - 500 manually created questions and it tests 5 core memory abilities: - information extraction - cross-session reasoning - temporal reasoning - knowledge updates - abstention "Prior benchmarks often fail to capture the nature of user-AI interactions, only have limited memory ability coverage, or often feature too short chat history..." To address this, "LongMemEval requires chat systems to parse the dynamic interactions online for memorization, and answer the question after all the interaction sessions." The FIRST NEURAL NETWORK It is well know that neural networks are the modular unit of #AI, and are powering the ongoing technological revolution. However, what many people do not realize is that the very first neural network dates as far back a 1805. In 1805, Adrien Marie Legendre published a method which given a set of data points, determines the line of best fit in the least squares sense. The so called "method of least squares" minimized the sum of squared distances between the data points ("training data") and the candidate lines. Carl Friedrich Gauss published the same idea in 1809 but noted that he had the result since as early as 1795. The method of least squares, commonly known today as "LINEAR REGRESSION" is indeed the first known fully end-to-end differentiable method that learns a model from training data. And since that is exactly the defining property of neural networks, it follows that linear regression is the first known neural network. #artificialintelligence #mathematics

The future of LLMs is going to be fine-tuning large open-source models on carefully curated data sets. And not just with tiny-rank LoRA updates. And you will need to know, did you do it correctly or not ? Because full fine-tuning big models is hard, expensive, and error prone. Luckily, there is help. Using weightwatcher, you can analyze your fine-tuned updates directly to see if the job is done, or if you need more data and more epochs. Here's an example of the fined-tuned model Qwen2-1.5B-Instruct, using the upcoming weightwatcher-pro product. From this, you can see that this is actually very good. How ? Weightwatcher provides layer quality metrics for your trained and fine-tuned AI models. Here, we see 1)Most of the layer alphas are between 2 and 4, exactly as predicted by the HTSR theory! (published in JMLR and Nature Communications, and presented at ICML, KDD, and NeurIPS 2023) i.e: https://lnkd.in/gPZZX8ck 2) There are a few layer alphas < 2, but the rand_distance plot (lower left corner) indicates that when alpha < 2, the random distance is more like alpha between 2 and 2.5. Anthropic releases Fascinating paper diving deeper into model inner workings. The paper studies how neurons in language models respond to specific features and how this changes as the models get bigger. Key Terms: Monosemantic Neurons:** Neurons that respond to one specific feature (i.e. a specific word). Polysemantic Neurons:** Neurons that respond to multiple features. Main Points: 1. Detection: Create methods to identify neurons that only respond to one feature. 2. Inhibition: Develop ways to stop neurons from only responding to one feature during training. Why It Matters: Reducing monosemantic neurons can make AI models more flexible and understandable, leading to better overall performance. Paper terms Neuron: A basic unit in a neural network that processes information. Language Models: AI models that understand and generate human language. What does prefrontal cortex activation 🧠 ⚡ during interactions with a robot 🤖 indicate? Today, I read an interesting paper about brain and human robot interaction: "Using near infrared spectroscopy to index temporal changes in affect in realistic human-robot interactions" Authors: Megan Strait Matthias Scheutz I wrote a summary: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive brain imaging technique that uses near-infrared light to measure changes in blood oxygen levels in the brain, which reflect brain activation. fNIRS has advantages over other brain imaging methods, such as greater portability compared to fMRI (allowing participants to wear a cap and move around) and better spatial resolution than EEG. In this pioneering study, researchers used fNIRS to assess participants' emotional responses during real-time interactions with robots. The study involved 38 young adult participants and included two types of robots: one stereotypical and one more human-like, across three conditions: observing the robot and another human remotely, remotely interacting with a robot, and directly interacting with a robot. The fNIRS results during the first interaction suggested that brain activation, specifically in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), was highest when participants interacted directly with the more human-like robot. Interestingly, contrary to some findings that suggest participants prefer human-like features in robots, PFC activation reflected stronger emotional responses, primarily eeriness and aversion, toward the human-like robot. The PFC activation may also indicate increased efforts in emotion regulation among participants. However, during repeated interactions, this initial heightened brain activation toward the human-like robot was not observed. 💡 These findings suggest that repeated interactions with a robot may reduce participants' initial negative emotional responses and make them feel more comfortable during the interaction. 💡 This study provides early insights into how the PFC responds to different types of robots and how these responses can be interpreted alongside participants' self-reported emotional experiences.
