At this year’s Galien Forum, we focused on transformative shifts in the biopharma industry, especially in the wake of COVID-19. Our discussions highlighted how intelligent technologies and AI are driving advances in drug discovery, reducing investment risks, and enabling personalized healthcare - paving the way for faster access to medicines and better economic outcomes for companies and healthcare systems alike. We also explored new collaboration models with biotech and academia, while expanding our scope beyond oncology to address metabolic diseases and neuro-related conditions. Insights on aging populations and constrained healthcare budgets underscored the need to keep science at the heart of our efforts as we embrace innovation. Looking ahead, these advancements inspire optimism for a healthcare ecosystem that is more efficient, accessible, and truly transformative for patient care. Multiple means to an end-to-end solution... This week, Roche unveiled the expansion of their digital pathology open environment, integrating 20 new algorithms from 8 computational pathology partner companies. Roche's offers the upstream hardware (slide scanner) and platform (IMS), while fostering an open environment for downstream image analysis tools (similar to the Apple App Store). Their IMS is also open to file formats from other scanning vendors. In contrast, at the beginning of this year, Proscia introduced the Proscia Ready Alliance. This initiative involves collaborations, both upstream and downstream, with scanner, algorithm, data, and LIS vendors to offer customers flexibility, alongside implementation support. For these approaches, specific benefits are more likely to appeal to distinct customer segments; larger research hubs may favor enhanced flexibility, while single-vendor workflows could be a priority for small to mid-sized labs. These are just a few examples of the many approaches digital pathology companies are taking to address integration and interoperability pain points.
