In my opinion, we all share the collective responsibility of combating climate change. 🌍 Businesses play a crucial role in empowering consumers to contribute to decarbonization efforts. Here are some key highlights of the article: 💡 Anticipating climate-related risks in construction, transportation, and agriculture is vital. Adapting buildings to heatwaves could cost 1-2.5 billion euros annually for new constructions, with additional costs for existing buildings. 💡 Protecting transportation infrastructure from adverse effects of climate change could require significant investments, ranging from "several hundred million" to "several billion" euros annually in agriculture, maintaining crop yields amid changing climate conditions could cost around 1.5 billion euros annually 💡 These estimates underscore the urgency of proactive climate measures. Therefore we decided to jump into biodiversity topics and start with the foundational layer: proprietary data. As biodiversity is incredible complex, the first steps to take action are about understanding nature by collecting data to an extend never seen before and a proper analysis of this data. This will help to take action, avoiding negative measures in the supply chains for agriculture related companies and to funnel investments in restoration and nature positive measures. Think about food companies, fashion companies, cosmetics companies and many more. They are strongly depended on mother nature's output. More than half of the global GDP depends on nature. $44 trillion economic value. Those companies have a strong motivation to invest in a good relationship and health of their by far most important supplier and they already start to invest. Hula is here to accelerate that. Combined with political actions like the European Nature Restoration Law to restore 20% of degraded land & sea by 2030 and similar laws in UK and other countries we currently create a chance for nature and biodiversity to recover partly. But we probably don't have many chances to do it right, as time and money are limiting factors, therefore a good understanding of what we do and how we funnel money will be crucial to succeed. The #Paris2024 Olympics set a new benchmark by committing to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, setting a new standard for large-scale events, far exceeding the average emissions of the London (2012) and Rio (2016) Games. By targeting every source of emissions and rallying all the parties involved, they're attempting to prove that another model can work. Paris 2024 focused on reducing emissions in three categories: transportation (34%), operations (33%), and construction (33%). Since it'll be over before we know it, they are already sharing their tools & methodology to allow others to step up their environmental transition game (pun intended) as it relates to major events. They are applying the ARO approach - avoid, reduce, offset - and of note: added two stages (forecast and mobilization). Breakdown: 🌏 Anticipate: They developed a tool to measure carbon footprint in order to gauge choices made since the bidding phase. 🌎 Avoid - They use 95% existing/temporary infrastructure and are only using facilities that can be used after the games are over. 🌏 Reduce - Accurately identified emission sources + proposed solutions activity-wide: low-carbon structures, renewable energy, sustainable catering, etc. 🌍 Offset - Takes into account the broadest component: the indirect impact of the games (e.g: travel by spectators). All emissions the can't be avoided are offset by projects designed to benefit all 5 continents. Early projects in place since 2021. 🌏 Mobilize: They plan to harness the potential of sport as an effective driver of the environmental transition and rally everyone (employees, partners, the sport movement, and also citizens) in the process. And I love this: They launched their own "climate coach" an app to measure your own personal + professional carbon footprint. Energy companies will continue to sell oil and gas as long as people buy their products (and governments let them produce). Subsidies create artificial demand and should be removed over time (for renewables too). There needs to be an effort to support energy access for low income people in this process.
