The work of Breeders is often underestimated. It's about using all the available tools and technology to develop the best seeds for the growers. This means matching seeds to environment, to climate, to soil and to the desires of the end consumers. Do you want more healthy vegetable oils? Ask a breeder. Do you like colourful tomatoes? There have been many breeders working on this. Do you want heirloom varieties of vegetables with good disease resistance? Plant breeders are there to make this work.

Selective breeding can lead to more resilient plants and animals. In other words, we can accelerate and steer evolution to develop plants and animals that get less sick, grow faster, need less pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, antibiotics, etc. Apparently also possible to make corals more heat resilient. In below linked article, authors show that they can breed corals to be able to tolerate 1C-week (one more week at 1C higher temperature) in one generation. Over many generations, this can add up. As authors point out this is not a panacea for corals, and we should continue to be just as alarmed about the heat-bleaching of reefs and the destruction of these delicate ocean ecosystems. Some welcomed proof points on the cell culture media front for #cultivatedmeat: First, a team led by Johannes le Coutre showed in a simple study that animal cells can be grown in serum-free media using hydrolysates from cattle feed pellets, supplemented with insulin, transferrin, & selenium. Although further optimizations are required, this type of work shows that existing, low-cost feedstocks can provide a suitable nutrition source for cells in culture. GFI will be funding several projects on hydrolysate optimization later this year. Nutreco has previously partnered with several startups in the sector to provide low-cost media inputs as the industry scales. The EUDR is certainly a step in the right direction when it comes to addressing deforestation and promoting sustainability in agriculture. It’s encouraging to see a regulatory framework that places a strong emphasis on environmental protection, aligning with the EU’s broader sustainability goals. However, like any sweeping regulation, it comes with challenges, particularly for smaller farmers and those in regions with less developed digital infrastructure. While larger corporations may have the means to meet these new requirements, it’s crucial we acknowledge the barriers smaller producers face, especially when it comes to data management and traceability. #EUDR #SustainableAgriculture #DataStandards #InclusiveGrowth
