This Digital Economy You Didn’t Know You’re Part Of Will Dictate Your Career Journey We have become so accustomed to the principle of ‘getting there at all cost’ that few things have the capacity to shock us again. Patrick Moynihan’s ‘defining deviancy down,’ appears to have been written for 2024 instead of the American society of 1980s and 1990s. To the serious-minded young professional, reputation It’s no longer just about opinions - it’s now a currency that can open or close doors in your life. Imagine a world where your reputation isn’t limited to what people say about you but instead becomes a measurable asset that shapes your career, finances, and relationships and you have the workplace of 2024 and beyond, where online profiles define you and where there is limited hiding place. The Reputation Economy - a data-driven system where every online activity, click, or comment leaves a digital footprint that will influence your work and future. Think this doesn’t affect you? ChatGPT using GPT-4o is free for everyone. What will you do with your subscriptions to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT for Teams? You’ll keep them and keep paying for them; the “free for everyone” version is not as capable as the paid versions. According to OpenAI, GPT-4o is the best LLM available today. It leverages advanced machine learning techniques to enhance contextual understanding, resulting in more accurate and responsive outputs. The model can manage more complex queries and deliver more relevant and detailed responses, setting a new standard in AI performance. GPT-4o speaks, listens, and sees; by “sees,” I mean that you can livestream a video to it and it will describe what it is seeing in near real time. It is almost fully multimodal; you can input text, images, document files, audio (like your voice or files), and videos, and it will output everything but video. GPT-4o is capable of near-human-like interactions. OpenAI has gone out of their way to make you think you’re talking to a person. You will have to decide where this feature sits on the cool/creepy scale. Personally, I find it super annoying. That said, some people will love it – I’m just not one of them. OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT with GPT-4o over the next couple of weeks. I got mine last night, and it performs like the demo videos (which you can find on OpenAI's site or at my blog). This is very exciting, but remember: Google I/O starts today, and their keynote is at 1 p.m. ET. One would think that Google will have an answer to GPT-4o. More importantly, Apple will release iOS 18 at WWDC (June 10), which should set the standard for AI-powered personal assistants. I recently picked up a Super Audio CD (SACD) player for $20 at Goodwill and realized that the digital revolution overlooked an amazing technology for those who prefer physical media over the ephemeral nature of digital formats. SACD, a high-resolution audio format developed by Sony and Philips in the late 1990s, was designed to provide a superior sound experience compared to standard CDs. It utilizes Direct Stream Digital (DSD) technology to deliver audio with greater fidelity, offering richer and more detailed soundscapes. This format is particularly aimed at audiophiles and music enthusiasts seeking an enhanced listening experience with the full dynamic range that artists intend. My SACD player is connected to an external digital audio converter (DAC), and let me tell you, this format delivers staggering sound. I picked up a copy of this SACD by the Scorpions and the Berlin Philharmonic, and it's an amazing piece of work. Yes, I like German metal, especially some of the older bands like Rammstein, Kreator, Helloween, and Accept. Come to think of it, I need to go back to Germany and look for some more old vinyl on my next trip! If you are an audiophile and want to put your system to the test, short of acquiring a new digital music player (DMP) with very high bit rate recordings, you must try these out. And yes, there are SACD rips floating around if you can't get your hands on an SACD player and want to hear the difference in the recordings. GEN Z: SAME SAME EVERYWHERE… BUT DIFFERENT? Is Gen Z the first truly global generation? Having more in common across borders than with people in their own country? This is the key question raised in the new Ipsos Generations 2024 report. Although I will leave it an open question mark, here are some learnings from the report you might find worth considering: CONVERGENCE ▶ : All Gen Z around the globe are: 😧 Feeling stressed and lonely everywhere (Base: 10,042 online adults aged 16-74 across 15 countries, August 2023) 📱 More likely to spend time interacting with friends online than offline  - which doesn’t mean they don’t value offline relationships, more a question of context & environment – but finding it more difficult than other generations to connect with people now compared to before the pandemic 👬 Showing similar social attitudes not only relatable to context & cohort effects, for example the agreement that same-sex couples should have the same rights to adopt children as heterosexual couples do MITIGATING FACTORS ⏸ to be taken into account when designing marketing strategies or public policies: 🌏 Geographical differences: for ex., attitudes towards gender roles are often rooted in local cultures. US Gen Zers are almost twice as likely to disagree that the role of women in society is to be good mothers and wives than Thai Gen Zers 🙍‍♂️ Gender gap: in Britain, for example, we see an emerging tension between young men and women around gender positions in society. CHARACTERISTICS TO WATCH 🔎 : 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 Life stage: Will Gen Zers remain more committed to socially conscious buying when a majority of them are in a different life stage, for instance, with several kids and a mortgage to pay for? 🧜‍♂️ Conformity vs Diversity: An important direction for further research is indeed the inner diversity of Gen Z 👩‍🏫 Joining the Mainstream? In North America and Western Europe, Boomers exerted a very strong influence on the societies they lived in because of their heavy demographic weight. But Gen Zers tend to settle in life far later and have a lower fertility rate. Will they be able to exert a cultural influence as strong as previous generations did? They might remain outside the mainstream for longer in the places where they live... At the same time, they may form transborder 'global tribes'. So they might be a global generation, but they are certainly very local too! Coming close to a new year, it is clear that there is pressure on #CEOs to innovate strategically.
