In discussions, trees oftentimes are reduced to being natural solar power plants plus carbon capture units. In fact their co-benefits are much more broad than _just_ doing carbon capture. 💪Coming back to the opening question: how does the growth process of a tree - and large parts of its carbon fixation process actually look like? And more importantly: is there something to learn when designing their electric cousins: next-gen #DirectAirCapture? 🌜𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 #night! That is because the key driver for their growth - water availability for their cell division - can much favorably be utilized at night time. (Link to the very interesting paper in the comments.) 💡Turning to electric trees, one of the key drivers for just about any DAC syst is energy cost. Wooden trees are smart enough to grow exactly during the local maximum of their key driver. So why are most DAC technologies designed upon the assumption that cheap power would be available 24/7? 🥁Introducing Phlair and their revolutionary #Hydrolyzer. A machine without notable co-benefits but rigorously designed with #affordability as a guiding north star. It has been designed to solve for the #DuckCurve. The circular economy will have to become "THE NEXT BIG THING", that much is certain. This new type of small-scale and regional economy not only reduces the impact on the climate and environment, -.... also promises enormous growth potential. According to a recent study by PwC, the direct added value from the circular economy in Austria already amounts to more than four billion euros, generated by 13,000 companies with a total of around 48,600 employees - one billion euros more than the steel industry, you have to imagine that!    According to the Federal Environment Agency, additional investment of 145 billion euros will be required by 2030 in order to achieve the targeted climate neutrality by 2040; the best prospects for the regional and domestic economy as a whole; everyone must fulfil their role as a driver of transformation and a new (re-)thinker. This also means thousands of interesting jobs for people who will have to invent, plan and remodel the (re-)future. 🚨 Johan Rockström's wake-up call at DLD Munich 🚨 TAKE TIME TO LOOK AT THIS PRESENTATION AHEAD OF CLIMATE WEEK. We’ve crossed 6 out of 9 planetary boundaries—and agriculture is at the heart of the crisis. The facts are staggering: 1️⃣ The Amazon, the most biodiverse place on Earth is on the verge of irreversible collapse, risking its shift from rainforest to savannah. 2️⃣ Agriculture alone is responsible for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions—a major climate driver. 3️⃣ 70% of global freshwater is consumed by farming, depleting vital ecosystems. 4️⃣ We’ve lost 30% of the planet’s topsoil—threatening future food security. 5️⃣ Agriculture drives 80% of global biodiversity loss, pushing over 1 million species toward extinction. Rockström’s message is clear:  We must shift to regenerative agriculture NOW, or risk total system failure. How to use the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce the impact of climate change on Switzerland? Climate change is showing negative impacts worldwide and Switzerland is particularly affected - what can be done? More than 70 experts and scientists from 30 renowned Swiss universities, authorities and industrial institutions wanted to know how new key technologies and methods can make our society and economy more resilient. Overall, the experts have high hopes for the latest developments in artificial intelligence (AI) in order to overcome the various challenges. Inspiring discussions at 'Circular Economy Futures 2050: Shaping the Action Agenda'! 🌍 The event highlighted the urgent need for collaborative action across sectors to create an enabling policy environment that supports the transition to a circular economy. A key takeaway was the critical role of circularity in addressing the global environmental crisis, with material extraction projected to increase by 60% by 2060 unless we act now. The economic potential of circularity is vast: it could unlock $4.5 trillion in growth and create 6 million jobs through activities such as recycling, repair, and remanufacturing. Moreover, the adoption of circular practices could cut global GHG emissions by up to 7% annually, saving up to 76 gigatons of CO2 between 2026 and 2050. As we reflect on the outcomes of the Summit of the Future, it’s clear that circularity is key to achieving the SDGs and driving a regenerative global economy. Original post : __________ 🚨 Beyond excited to share our new paper in Nature Climate Change on perceptions of 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 🙌 🙌 Across four countries 🇩🇰 🇮🇳 🇳🇬 🇺🇸, we find widespread underestimation of within-country carbon footprint inequality, including among the wealthy. We sampled approx. 1,000 participants in each of the four countries. A unique feature was that 50% of participants came from the Top 10% income segment, which is systematically under-represented in behavioral science research. The remaining 50% of participants came from the 'general population'. Participants estimated the average personal carbon footprint for three groups: the bottom 50%, the top 10%, and the top 1%. They also reported their support for climate policies and perceived fairness of carbon footprint inequality. ⭐ KEY RESULTS ⭐ 1️⃣ We observed widespread underestimation of the carbon footprints in the top income groups, especially in #Denmark and #UnitedStates. 2️⃣ In 🇩🇰 and 🇳🇬, the more participants underestimated actual carbon footprint inequality, the less they supported *climate policies*. Participants from the top 10% generally supported climate policies more in India 🇮🇳 and certain policies across the countries. 3️⃣ On average, actual carbon footprint inequality was perceived as slightly unfair. Interestingly, participants from the top 10% income segment in 🇩🇰 🇳🇬 🇺🇸 perceived the actual carbon footprint inequality to be significantly fairer than those from the general population 🔥 Together, our results underscore the urgent need to raise awareness about carbon footprint inequality and its implications for #ClimateJustice and #ClimateAction. 🌊 Switzerland Underwater: Climate Crisis Hits Home Our hearts go out to those affected by the devastating floods in Switzerland. Let's be clear - this isn't just "freak weather." The climate crisis is here, and it's getting worse. Here are key insights from recent articles countering the argument that these events are merely natural: 🌧️ Increased Rainfall with Climate Change: ·      Each 1°C rise = 7% more rain. ·      Switzerland is warming TWICE as fast as the global average. 📊 Hydrological Findings in Europe for 2023: ·      Europe had 7% more precipitation than average. ·      One-third of European rivers exceeded the 'high' flood threshold; 16% surpassed the 'severe' threshold. ·      Flooding affected around 1.6 million people and caused 81% of Europe's climate-related economic losses (EM-DAT). 🛠️ Need for Mitigation and Adaptation: ·      Long-term, sustainable planning and risk-based flood protection are crucial. ·      Switzerland has made significant advances but needs more focus on risk-based approaches. ·      Some mountain valleys may become unprotectable. Welcome to my Biodiversity Halloween Edition. First of all, I get it; animals can look scary, nasty & intimidating. But it would be even scarier if snakes, sharks, spiders & co. would go extinct. 💡 Why each species matter: Imagine life on earth as a JENGA tower. Every species is one stone in the tower. The human species is one stone in this, too. To survive, we humans need to ensure that the tower doesn't fall. But currently, we keep on taking out stone by stone. That might work out if you take out a couple of stones, but you get into trouble sooner or later. If you have ever played the game, there is always this last stone that lets everything collapse. We don't know exactly what this last stone might be. But science is clear that we should urgently stop to remove stones. Because the tower is shaking like hell. 🤯 Some perspective At least 10,000 species go extinct each year. That's 27 species per day. That's 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate. Meaning we are playing JENGA tower in turbo destruction mode. 💪 1 Action you can take to avoid extinction Make nature a higher priority. In your private life: Go outside daily, engage in your community, donate. In your company: Measure your impact & dependencies on nature & act. In your government: Shift budget for damaging subsidies to regenerative. Ending with some positive vibes here. We can stop doing this. Instead of our current self-destructing behavior, we can raise our game to bring back life by protecting what is left & restoring & rewilding the rest. 💬 OUR PUBLIC CONSULTATION is open: Announcing the Nature Climate Standard (NCS) - a new Carbon Crediting Standard for Nature-Based Solutions! SILVACONSULT, Tree.ly, and Waldklimaschutz Schweiz have partnered to develop the Nature Climate Standard (NCS) – a new carbon crediting standard for nature-based carbon projects designed to meet the stringent requirements of the ICROA Carbon Crediting Endorsement. Alongside the standard, we are introducing two methodologies: Impact Improved Forest Management (IIFM) and Forest Nature Reserves (FNR). By harmonising these methodologies under the NCS, we aim to create a unified framework that sets a benchmark for quality in European nature-based solutions, starting with forestry. Although this organisation has not been fixed yet, we are releasing the NCS and its methodologies for public consultation.
