This influential framework suggests that most customers exhibit a stable level of brand loyalty while remaining open to switching. It introduces critical principles, such as the Double Jeopardy Law and the Duplication of Purchase Law, which have profound implications for marketing strategies. The model questions the effectiveness of highly segmented, niche marketing approaches, instead advocating for broad appeal and continuous efforts to attract new customers. We are in the middle of a mass extinction event in CPG grocery. This became clear as soon as the pipeline of ubiquitous, cheap capital started to dry up, and with SVB curballs last year, and now Ampla this year, there are shocks to the CPG ecosystem that a lot of brands won’t survive. Nobody knows exactly how long it will last, or exactly how many species of CPG brands will perish. For those who do weather the storm, there is HUGE opportunity to innovate and dominate the post-extinction world. At Pod Foods we’re a startup ourselves just like all of you emerging CPG brands. We’ve been at this for 6 years now, and have been fortunate enough to navigate the extinction, but it wasn’t easy. Want to be one of the lucky ones who survives this mass extinction? Learn from the mass extinction of Dinosaurs 65 million years ago: 👉1. Be Small, be nimble: adapt quickly and don’t require too much food (in this case: reduce your OH spending ASAP) 👉2. Have lots of offspring: Diversify your base of business. Omnichannel is the safest place to be. Should you be in DTC or Retail? The answer is BOTH. If you have more than 20% of you business in one retailer or are over-indexed to one channel, think about how you can diversify. 👉3. Be a Generalist, and survive stress: Be able to eat a diet of lots of different foods (AKA funding) from many different sources, in case Plan A doesn’t work out. 👉4. Be free to Move: If your habitat (AKA Points of Distribution AKA “Doors”) is destroyed, how quickly can you pivot into a new one? Everyone in the the emerging CPG business should pay close attention to the aftermath of the Hollywood writers strike. We’ll all look back on this decades from now as the first major battle in the “AI wars”. The writers won this battle, and held back the “uber-ization” of their industry, for now. Any founder of a new CPG brand is in a similar position to these writers. As an innovation brand, you are taking on risk and doing the hard work of creating something from nothing just like they do. In the same way Hollywood studios can theoretically use generative AI to write stories and screenplays which fit Netflix’s algorithm that same AI could generate CPG products which sell at retail. Imagine a future where Big CPG can just create innovative new brand concepts on their own using AI, and hire gig worker “founders” to run them. It isn’t far fetched, when you consider that hotel chains like Marriott and Hilton have sub brands of faux “independent” hotels all over the world already. PepsiCo could for example launch 30 early stage startups per year in snacks and beverage, with the goal of 2 of them developing into the next Siete. None of this is set in stone. The Bitter Truth About #Lindt Chocolate Lindt chocolate, long marketed as “expertly crafted” indulgence, hides a bitter truth: their bars may be full of #lead. A lawsuit revealed dangerously high levels of lead and #cadmium in their dark chocolate, exposing consumers to #toxic #heavymetals linked to brain damage, kidney issues, and more. Even worse? Lindt isn’t the artisanal chocolatier it claims to be—its cocoa is mass-sourced globally, and these contaminants seep in during production. While Lindt dodged accountability with a dismissed lawsuit, consumers are left questioning their safety. The glossy ads and luxury branding? Just smoke and mirrors. Lindt is another corporation prioritizing profit over health. Who should be responsible for informing #consumers about #corporatemisconduct? Should #retailers step in to pull questionable products from shelves or, at the very least, provide warnings at checkout when a company is under scrutiny? As issues with #foodsafety and corporate transparency continue to rise, it’s clear we need a better system to navigate these waters. Consumers shouldn’t bear the full burden of staying informed while corporations and retailers evade accountability. It’s time for stronger safeguards and clear communication to protect #public #health and #trust.

Market Volatility, influenced by external factors like climate change and consumer shifts, was also a major concern, highlighted by 27% of respondents. Finding Scalable Opportunities remains a substantial barrier for 23% of investors, underscoring the difficulty in identifying ventures that can grow sustainably and meet the increasing consumer demand for health-conscious and environmentally friendly products. In 2008, Jeff Bezos delivered an inspiring talk to Y Combinator, where he shared an intriguing story about early 20th-century Luxembourgian brewers. Watch the video: https://lnkd.in/e-PAyfQ5 (still shocked it only has 100k views 🤯) At that time, there was no electric grid, so in order to get electricity into the breweries, the brewers had to generate their own electricity. They would locate near a stream or river and generate their own hydroelectric power. The brewers that did this were at a huge advantage because electricity was incredibly useful in a brewery. However, once the electric grid was established in Luxembourg, the brewers that generated their own electricity were no longer at an advantage since the method which they generated the electricity had no impact on the taste of the beer (the final product). Jeff calls things like generating your own electricity when the power grid exists ‘undifferentiated heavy lifting’ and advises companies to avoid it and all work that doesn’t actually make your beer taste better. In eCommerce, there are lots of parallels, and our advice is similar to Jeff’s: outsource everything that doesn’t make your beer taste better. It is possible to custom develop your own eCommerce platform, but our advice is to just use Shopify. Developing your own eCommerce platform falls into the category of undifferentiated heavy lifting that Jeff warns against. It won't make your beer taste better. Your customers won’t know whether you developed the platform yourself or are using Shopify. All they care about is that they have a good experience using your site (it's fast, easy to navigate etc.) This is true for most categories of eCommerce software. It would be possible to develop nearly all the software internally, but in nearly all cases, we don’t think it makes sense. Leverage the scores of people who are laser focused on solving that one problem. This will free up your team to focus on the core of your business: the things that will actually make your beer taste better.

In the face of resource scarcity, rising populations and higher standards of living, nations in Africa and across the Global South can skip the intensification stage of animal faming and “leapfrog” their way to advanced methods to complement the existing smallholder farm ecosystem. It wouldn’t be the first time that developing nations employed a leapfrog strategy. In fact, much of the same regions bypassed overreliance on central power grids in favor of solar energy, or bypassed landlines to directly adopt cellular phones. In my latest op-ed for World Economic Forum, I outline my vision of a complementary strategy whereby African countries both invest in and preserve smallholder farming (which carry unique social, economic and cultural importance) and simultaneously advance cellular agriculture and other innovative forms of local protein production. It requires careful planning and coordination by numerous stakeholders, but the result would be to lead the way in the global food system transformation and being able to do what the Global North didn’t do: avoiding the long-lasting externalities of intensive agriculture as a means to meet increasing protein demand!

Interesting fact: alcohol free beers is the fastest growing beer segment in German retail since the start of 2024. Growing double digit vs 2023, where it was also growing. Trends in German beer market are moving towards alcohol free beer-mixes with fruity flavors as well as beers with 0.0% alcohol. Carlsberg 0.0% is today again being filled here in Hamburg, and it is great to see that our colleagues here at the brewery are enabling the growth that also Carlsberg 0.0% is experiencing. The lab grown proteins, meat and substitute products industry was doomed to fail from the get go… Not only is it ridiculously expensive to manufacture between the high tech equipment and the high labor costs, but the health implications of eating this Sci-FI protein are likely to be disastrous. On the morning of September 24, 2024, the global coffee market saw a strong rebound in the prices of both Robusta and Arabica on two major exchanges. For the first time in May, Robusta prices surpassed Arabica, and the gap has since widened as Robusta prices rose more sharply due to various factors. Notably, Robusta has become increasingly popular in the international market. Many roasters worldwide have switched to using more Robusta instead of Arabica in response to rising raw material costs. In addition, Robusta supply has been severely affected by weather conditions. This not only impacts the size and yield of coffee beans but also creates challenges for harvesting and drying. Consequently, there has been a decline in both quality and export volumes. Food producers need to be very careful about what claims to have on their packages.
