In pediatrics, the focus on preventative medicine is more entrenched. AI-enabled technologies are fully scaled and have led to applications for early detection of diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease. Novoic’s AI-enabled software detects subtle cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s neuropathology based on how people speak. Quantum computing will spark a new era of cryptography. planqc is tackling the challenges of scalability and error correction in quantum computing. Working to increase the number of qubits in a quantum processor, they have achieved Europe’s first 1200-atomic qubit array, with plans to scale to 10.000 or 100.00 in the next few years. While this technology is still in the frontier innovation stage, and over $1 billion has been invested, its applicability has massive potential to impact diverse industries, such as cryptography, pharmaceuticals, new materials, and climate research. ***Update on Version One Ventures's thesis*** We back mission-driven founders who are early in new areas. As you know, Boris Wertz and I never stop challenging ourselves to be better VCs - it’s one of our core values! An important part of that work is developing a strong investment thesis, and evolving it as technology improves and markets change. Our current investment thesis, “backing mission-driven founders at the earliest stages,” was introduced back in 2020. It encapsulates our focus on backing a certain type of deeply passionate entrepreneur at an early stage when few people might believe in them.    Those words still hold true but they don’t explicitly spell out something we look for when evaluating an investment opportunity: timing. Investors always talk about “Why now”, and we do too, but the more interesting question for us is “Why not?”   Another way to ask it is “What’s possible?” We’re interested in those rare opportunities where a founder is creating a brand new category. These opportunities are fringy and emerging (some might call them crazy, weird, whacky or wild). There’s nothing obvious or inevitable about it. They’re building something the market hasn’t yet imagined and doesn’t fit neatly into an existing market category. But if they’re right, then the fringe picks up momentum and ultimately becomes a wave. So, going forward, we’re evolving our thesis to be even more explicit about the why now and why not: We back mission-driven founders who are early in new areas. Looking back, we predicted a few waves right and invested early into them: Vertical SaaS in 2012-2014 (e.g. Jobber) Crypto in 2016-2020 (e.g. Uniswap Labs) Climate in 2020-2021 (e.g. Patch) These days, the areas on our radar are a combination of “why now” and “why not”. AI – with a focus on AI-native products (e.g. Ada) VR/AR – especially with the recent launch of Apple Vision Pro (e.g REMIO) Crypto – yes, we’ve been investing in crypto since 2016, but it still feels early given that design space has recently opened with new L2 scaling, and the acceleration of mainstream use cases like payments or tokenization of real-world assets Climate/energy – we are looking outside of software and just invested in a materials company replacing lithium ion with sodium ion (as the world is moving towards electrification) Hardtech/biotech – we recently backed a company building the next illumina for proteins Building a startup is hard enough as it is, but pioneering founders need to build on brand new technology, find new markets, and convince everyone of the market need. BUT this is exactly who we, as venture capitalists, want to back. We look forward to meeting more of these courageous and bold founders creating transformational change!

You know deeptech has gone mainstream when UBS is leaning hard into it. 🤷🏼‍♂️ It's difficult to make anything of this 'Deep Tech Nation Switzerland Foundation' as of now, other than the name is quite the mouthful. It's a foundation that 'will not launch its own funds', but 'the financial contributions of the partners flow into the foundation's assets, which are invested in the various programs to change the framework conditions in Switzerland in the long term and strengthen Switzerland's competitiveness in the global innovation race.' 🤔 Honestly, the corporates involved should just focus on being LPs. That's what Swiss (and all European) deeptech needs more of: European LPs investing in European deeptech VCs...who then invest in European deeptech startups and scaleups. Europeans love creating big, convoluted organisations doing bureaucratic things, even when it's not directly part of government. A word of advice to the Swiss: keep it simple. When you do involve more people though, make sure they actual know deeptech, have built deeptech companies, and/or have a track record of investing in deeptech companies. And involve international profiles. The Swiss ecosystem is waaaay too insular. It's a major handicap. Also, it looks like they took a page from the EIC fund's marketing and comms team and lifted the term 'unicorn factory' from them. Can AI trained on Lies ever know Truth? Much has been written about AI doing this and that and everything in between. From Job losses and human obsolescence prediction on one side to miraculous cures for cancer, solution to poverty and global warming on the other; the drum beat of the March of AI is both dizzy and terrifying to dilettante (self acknowledged ) like myself. However, there is a simple problem that seems to have been overlooked. The advance of AI has been preceded by an explosion in unedited, un-curated and unverified content. Political discourse, news, entertainment and even the field of INVESTING are rife with half truths at best and outright lies at worst all being peddled in a digital soup of content binging. Even scientific papers are having their moment of crisis in terms of "reproducing the same results" (https://lnkd.in/dwcAtRWA) To conclude, lest this turns into a harangue, I believe that the promise of AI would be considerably diluted with the race to profits sacrificing truth in the race to have it all. Going out on a limb, smaller scale AI models with better control of input data; would prove to be much better tools for business and societal transformation. What happened to Germany’s industrial dominance? In the early 2000s, Germany shifted toward a model of fiscal conservatism and persistent current account surpluses. This approach involved avoiding public overspending and adjusting the welfare state to ensure that Germans, on net, earned more money from abroad than they spent internationally. A current account surplus is balanced by a capital account deficit, meaning investment funds flowed out of Germany into other nations like the United States, which famously runs a continuous current account deficit and capital surplus. This strategy has led to German firms being less innovative and German infrastructure being relatively underdeveloped for the country’s level of wealth. By suppressing domestic consumption to increase savings, Germany exports these savings as investments into thriving foreign consumer markets where they can earn returns. Although this model might seem morally commendable, it is fundamentally flawed. Germany is not aiming for balance; instead, it places financial strain on its own people based on a misguided belief in thrift. Germany’s two significant foreign policy challenges stem from this model. First, the lack of innovation has left the country dependent on unstable foreign fuel supplies, which has now hindered the export industries that drive its economy and generate its current account surplus. Second, by promoting its culture of thrift to the rest of Europe—countries that previously absorbed some of its surpluses—Germany has reduced the number of spenders in its own neighborhood. If one country is to earn money on net, another must spend money on net. Now, with France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, and others spending less, Germany must find new markets to buy its goods. This situation illustrates how economic expertise can sometimes be flawed. Much of the field involves moralizing that lacks a rational evaluation of economic or fiscal strategy. It is only the first edition, but HLTH Europe has already established itself as the leading #HealthTech conference in Europe. Besides my 4 highlights, I also had the chance to moderate a panel on the topic "Last mile: Localising access for underserved areas" with 3 fantastic panelists: · Prathibha (President, Mayo Clinic Health System) · Minal (National Director of Primary Care and Community Transformation, NHS England) · Harmony (SVP, Chief Medical Officer & Head of Global Medical at ViiV Healthcare) PS: Amira (SVP Innovation at Siemens Healthineers): we missed you! Here are the key insights of the panel: Bringing healthcare #access to all, especially to underserved areas, has been a challenge since the inception of healthcare. With all the technology of our modern world, is #Healthcare access on the verge of being solved? The short answer is no. But there is hope. In the UK: ➝ There is a 15-year life expectancy gap between deprived areas, and wealthier neighbourhoods nearby. ➝ Funding struggles to keep up: In the next 15 years, a 37% increase in "ill-health costs" is expected, while the working population will increase by 4% over the same period. ➝ Increasing productivity is essential to solve the problem: A 1% decrease in productivity costs 1.5 billion pounds. In the US: ➝ The zip code is (still) a better determinant of health than the genetic code. ➝ Enabling access to underserved areas can also be seen as an opportunity rather than a problem. Tech adoption will be faster due to higher unmet needs, accelerating innovation that can later benefit well-served areas. Debunking one myth: ➝ For HiV, there is now a better access and coverage in Africa than in certain parts of developed countries (US and Europe). Pockets of innovation: ➝ To unlock HCP capacity, the NHS has a national program to move towards a modern General Practice, moving away from "first come first serve" to a new model based on population health and segmentation: the right care for the right person in the right way. First results show that 30% of GP appointments could be done via "messaging only" (instead of F2F visits), bringing massive efficiency gains. ➝ Mayo Clinic already has 75 specialties that are technology enabled, bringing the “Mayo medical care" in the rural areas via virtual and hybrid models, and also embedding the 50+ AI algorithms already active at Mayo. ➝ But increasing access is not only about Tech. Sometimes, it is about boldness: Viiv Healthcare, a pharma company specialised in HiV, gave the patent of its drugs away in 90+ underserved markets, enabling cheap and at-scale production. What does the future hold? Will someone living in an underserved area be able to visit the "Mayo Clinic in the metaverse with his / her digital twin?" Zeitgeist is changing and we need to adapt or to encounter. When we started Climate Founders 4.5 years ago, we had a perfect Product Zeitgeist Fit (explained by a16z: https://lnkd.in/ePtBRVD3) in 2018 and 2019 activist groups like Fridays for Future played an important role to make the societies aware that we are in a climate crisis and need to act, with the beginning of the new decade announcement after announcement was made: politics made important changes from regulation to investment programs, more people than usual voted for green politics, the climate crisis got relevant media coverage, thousands of companies world-wide set decarbonization goals, huge asset managers implemented ESG and decarbonization strategies, billionaires pledged for the climate, hundreds of climatetech fund were established, serial entrepreneurs went into climate topics, Covid made many poeple think about contributing to a better world … in general you could feel change to make this decade to what it is in fact, the decisive decade for humanity. Even with beginning of the Russian war, there was a positive thinking that renewables are the solution to solve energy, industry and dependence problems, even climate chrisis deniers called them „freedom energies“. In 2023 we saw some Zeitgeist changes, the climate crisis seemed not to be a main topic anymore, in the media, in the politics, in companies and the society in general. Ambitious politicians understand that the society is not ready to change, some media work heavily against climate politics, companies realize how hard it is to decarbonize and partly drop their goals, asset managers start to drop ESG and decarbonization goals, investors and entrepreneurs look more at AI, politics goes right and populistic. Regarding Climatetech im still very optimistic: The 2018-2022 Zeitgeist helped to build a massive ecosystem, which is still growing. The current Zeitgeist is not in favor for Climatetech, but it will come back for sure, as unfortunately the climate crisis will hit us harder every year and we always had this typical left-right cycles in politics and societies. Due to our expanded activies our dealflow is still growing, but in general we have the impression that less new founders entered the space in the last 12-18 months and also hear from some other VCs that they see less climatetech teams. Private capital has huge potential to help develop a local ecosystem. It is the fuel for the local engine (startups and founders) to work. However, in biotech, local ecosystem dont thrive isolated but connected to the larger ones. Florian Schuster and Christopher Trummer seems to be doing this at Venga Ventures. From the little I have seen here, the idea is to connect Austria to the larger biotech league. If successful, the value created by these companies is spreaded between all engaged countries. If I understood this correctly, I share the excitement of this strategy and believe there is great technology to be developed outside of the larger biotech places of the world (think Boston, San Francisco, New York, San Diego and London), but that do not have a fighting chance if not connected to them somehow. Some local VCs in Brazil and Latan are doing this too like Vesper Biotechnologies and Zentynel Frontier Investments but there is room for more.
