The swiss main news brought the current cycling market situation to the their news and unfortunately this will put even more pressure on the retail prices as they say you get everywhere discounts. It’s already a difficult year and then with the news yesterday about Flyer closing their production in Switzerland will put even more questions where the cycling market will go. There is still a significant high stock at retailers and brands and the economy situation makes it not easier. The retail needs to set focus on good service and after sales that will help in the mid and long run when the market is picking up again.

The new Swiss Transport Study has some good new insights and a positive trend of owning and using an Ebike in Switzerland. More and more people leave the car and take the e-bike Unlike electric cars, the popularity of e-bides in Switzerland is reaching record levels. What the reasons are and what experts are now demanding in order to expand bicycle traffic more strongly. In brief: Transport is responsible for 41 percent of Switzerland's CO2 emissions. E-bikes are increasingly replacing the car over short and medium distances. In view of the increasing number of e-bikes, improvements are being demanded in the bicycle infrastructure and the connection to public transport. France is financially supporting the purchase of e-bikes as part of a comprehensive climate plan. This has a positive impact on the Swiss transport turnaround. Because more and more people leave the car in the garage in everyday life and take the e-bike instead. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by the opinion research institute Yougov last September on behalf of Bosch. Specifically, almost 50 percent of the e-bike riders surveyed stated that they completed half of their previous car trips by e-bike. Last week, I had the privilege of participating in adidas' EU Leadership Camp—a three-day gathering of leaders from across Europe to reflect on 2024, set the vision for 2025, and prepare ourselves for success. One moment that truly stood out for me was an interview with Paul Pogba on leadership. He shared how his leadership style matured when he was told to help elevate his teammates. When others weren't performing at his level, instead of yelling or pushing them down, he realized the importance of raising their confidence to bring them up. This sparked a moment of reflection for me. Let me take you back a few months: in May, I hired a new team member fresh out of university. A different generation, a different mindset, and a completely new perspective. I’ve been fortunate to have worked with incredible direct reports who brought curiosity, resilience, and a wealth of professional experience. But this was my first time leading someone entirely new to the workforce. I invested a lot of time sharing tips, providing feedback, and offering support. But despite my efforts, I wasn’t seeing the progress I’d hoped for. I sought advice from peers and leaders, adjusted my approach, and kept pushing forward. In the end, it didn’t work out—the team member decided to leave the company. I was disappointed when their resignation letter came. I believed that with more time, they could have overcome the hurdles and felt immense pride in their growth. After reflecting and speaking with mentors, I came to the conclusion there wasn’t much more I could have done to change the outcome. Fast forward to Pogba’s words about elevating others. This struck a chord with me. While I spent time coaching and guiding my direct report, I realized I hadn’t done enough to celebrate the things they were already excelling at. I hadn’t pushed them down, but I also hadn’t elevated them enough. That’s the lesson I’m taking forward as a leader: it’s not just about coaching for improvement but also about recognizing and amplifying the strengths that are already there. Market stats: 🇦🇹 Austria's 2023 bike market is down -16.6% to 421k units, yet resetting -15.1% in value to a new playing field level of € 1.18B. This is the third €1B year in a row, compared to 2019's 439k units & €700M value, with an expectancy of market recovery this year or early 25. eBikes led sales, attaining a "mobility milestone" of 52% (221k) of all units and 75% of cash (€894M) in till. They even accounted for 62% of adult bike units. Folding +39%, Gravel +20% and Road +10% categories performed best YoY, also following the well established less volume more value trend. Folding (~8000 units, ~2% tot) and eCargo (~5500units, ~1% tot) were the fastest growing segments. This is a success which the VSSÖ - Association of sporting goods producers and sporting goods dealers in Austria atributes in part to subsidy and company bike programs, as well as their ease of use, low running costs, and low environmental impact. Folding bikes are more than just an e-phenomenon. Quality is important to Austrian buyers as they are sell at an ASP of over €1900 muscular, €2500 electric, surely also aided by €500 subsidy. 2022's bike/train commute push from Austria is clearly having an impact as it is this portability that counts most to train commuters; likely why muscular bikes led with 68% of units in the segment. Overall, demand for folding bikes more than doubled at +108%, but again, numbers remain small at just ~8000 units. This is a space to watch for 24. By contrast, just 470 or ~8% of 5500 cargobikes were muscular, with an overall ASP of a notable ~€5600. The cargo segment is expected to grow further in 24, and luckily the government has now scrapped a €150 eBike shop contribution to the subsidy value, of €900 per unit. The bullwhip has also moved mostly upstream: Whereas 2022 and 2023 saw most stock and issues in retail, shops now seem to have restored balance and are playing safe, benefitting from close to market (excessive) manufaurer stock. Effectively relegating most overstock issues to suppliers and distributors, who are feeling the most pressure. Nonetheless consumer demand is ongoing and healthy, says the VSSÖ. Cycling has become more about numbers, kilometers, and digital displays. This constant distraction is gradually detaching us from our environment, from real life. At its core, adventure should be about being present in the moment. True adventure is experienced when we are fully aware of our surroundings, free from distractions.
