Germany: Fund industry grows by 6 per cent ▪️ Equity funds with record assets ▪️ Bond funds with highest sales since 2012 ▪️ Balanced funds and property funds with outflows ▪️ Decline in new business for Spezialfonds The fund industry manages a record EUR 4,413 billion in assets for investors in Germany as at the end of September. This is an increase of over 6 per cent since the beginning of the year (EUR 4,149 billion). At EUR 2,183 billion, the majority is accounted for by open-ended Spezialfonds for institutional investors. These are primarily retirement pension schemes (EUR 768 billion) and insurers (EUR 536 billion). The fund companies manage EUR 1,524 billion in open-ended retail funds, EUR 645 billion in mandates and EUR 61 billion in closed-ended funds. In the first nine months of the year, the industry received net new money totalling EUR 21.3 billion. Open-ended retail funds accounted for EUR 20.6 billion of this, compared to EUR 14.0 billion in the same period last year. German fund industry grows by 9 per cent year-on-year: ◾ Equity funds are the largest group ◾ Bond funds top the sales list ◾ Spezialfonds: Outsourcing of portfolio management is widespread Fund companies had a total of EUR 4,289 billion AuM for investors in Germany as at 31 March 2024, an increase of nine per cent in the last twelve months (31 March 2023: EUR 3,922 billion). This means that assets are only slightly below the all-time high of EUR 4,311 billion at the end of 2021. The majority, at EUR 2,125 billion, is attributable to open-ended Spezialfonds for institutional investors. These are primarily retirement benefit schemes (EUR 748 billion) and insurance companies (EUR 543 billion). The fund companies manage EUR 1,459 billion in open-ended retail funds. Equity funds account for EUR 680 billion of this total. Their share has risen from 36 to 47 per cent in the last five years, mainly due to the rise in stock prices. Next come balanced funds with EUR 350 billion and bond funds with EUR 217 billion. Their share fell from 28 to 24 per cent and 20 to 15 per cent respectively. The net assets of property funds totalled EUR 129 billion. In the first quarter of 2024, the fund industry received a net inflow of EUR 21.7 billion in Germany. Open-ended Spezialfonds accounted for EUR 9.5 billion of this. Open-ended retail funds attracted EUR 3.8 billion. This is above the average value for the quarters in 2023 (EUR 3.2 billion). In the first six months of the current year, Swiss start-ups generated a total of CHF 1,082.4 million in venture capital. This represents a decline of 9.5% on 2023. The number of financing rounds also decreased, falling by 10.4% to 138. But although the figures are roughly similar to those of last year, analysis of investment by sector and maturity level of the start-ups shows clear differences and a contradictory picture emerges. Although young start-ups from some sectors or fields such as AI and energy generation and storage are able to attract investors, late stage investment is in short supply. This half-year update to Swiss Venture Capital Report, published by the online news portal startupticker.ch and the investor association SECA in cooperation with startup.ch, shows that investors are more confident than a year ago. According to the broad-based survey of about 100 Swiss start-up investors, conducted by SECA, the vast majority expect the number of investment opportunities and the number of investments to increase.
