𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝗴-𝗜𝗻 𝗛𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 This article from Electrek.co, https://lnkd.in/gFVhtz5S, reports on the second study out of the EU that shows in real world tracking that plug-in hybrid owners are not plugging their vehicles in, leading to an over 200 percent increase in CO2 emissions compared to their expected emissions from government lab tests. Real world testing is now common at global government laboratory testing labs, but these tests cannot account for owners who do not take advantage of a vehicle’s capabilities. So, vehicles such as plug-in hybrids need a technical solution that requires owners to plug in, probably if they exceed a certain number of miles and after multiple warnings. This may be the only way to guarantee plug-in hybrids come close to meeting their regulatory estimates. Failing that, they should not be allowed to receive fuel economy/emissions incentives. The technology hasn’t failed, but the application of the technology is failing. This research is part of our EV Evolutions project that tracks EV developments in the US, EU, and China.

Swiss scale-up Bcomp Ltd’s high-performance components, which are made from natural flax fibers, enable substantial weight and #Co2 emission reductions compared to standard materials. Applications range from Formula 1 and #automotive to #aerospace. Investors in the company, which on April 16 announced a $40 million series C funding round, include BMW i Ventures, Volvo Cars Tech Fund and Porsche Ventures, as well as Airbus Ventures, Generali, and existing investors. Bcomp’s #circular, #naturalfibers composite promises to replace #carbonfibers, #glassfibers and #petrochemical-based #plastic parts, used to make everything from door handles to seatbacks, a small but important part of the journey to greener #mobility. “Our purpose is to #decarbonize with our #biobased materials,” says Bcomp CEO Christian Fischer. Bcomp is active in the automotive and mobility, motorsports, marine and sports sectors. Its proprietary reinforcement technologies ampliTex and powerRibs are used for making light and stiff composites that enable reduction of the environmental impact of products. While Bcomp’s primary focus in on the automotive sector it is already well-advanced in its effort to target the aviation sector. It has developed a solution that passes the fire retardancy and heat generation tests needed to adhere to tough aviation safety requirements. “It took us years to manage these aspects,” says Fischer. "No business case for private investment in charging infrastructure" 🚘⚡ I cannot disagree more... This is a slide from a presentation on the Stanford Energy YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/ep8EQMga ➡️ EVs are booming in Europe (and elsewhere). And the typical place where (fast) EV chargers are located are at shopping malls, Starbucks, McDonald's, hotels, traditional gas stations (see France) and other commercial areas. ➡️ Typically you spend charging a minimum of 20 minutes, so meanwhile you go spending instead of waiting in the car. And since most EV drivers are upper-middle class consumers, that's a lot of additional spending power. ➡️ So if you ask me, investing in EV charging infrastructure IS one of the best investments to make [at the right location] - given the incentives and political push for more EVs. Also NOT having EV chargers in a commercial area will lose customers, since [we/they] seek places to charge. PS: EVs are cleaner, faster and in my opinion more fun to drive than stinky ICEs [on a daily basis] :) PPS: the information on the slide comes from a 2015 report, which is very outdated. Terrestrial mining of Nickel, Copper and Cobalt bearing ores typically causes near permanent damage to rainforests and disrupts 1000s of times the biomass that nodule harvesting results in. TMC's Pilot nodule collection in 2022 revealed that the sediment plume stayed low and settled fast, confirming earlier findings by Massachusetts Institute of Technology that 92–98% of sediment remains within 2 meters of the seafloor. With this data in hand, The Metals Company and Allseas are refining the collector and its diffuser system to further limit sediment transport in preparation for commercial scale harvesting, likely beginning some time in late 2025 or early 2026, depending on when exploitation approval is granted.

Thoughts on #innovation and #strategy from #wasteexpo 🧐 1.) #EV trucks —> collection companies doing one-off pilots. No large-scale deployments, partly due to supply constraints. Unit costs in $1mm range. Charging infrastructure at scale is a big obstacle. 2.) #Hydrogen trucks —> they’re BIG, not for urban routes. A 🐓 (trucks) and 🥚 (fueling infrastructure) problem. Small unit cost delta below EVs, but still big delta above diesel trucks. 3.) #AI —> collection companies (except $WM) not publicizing AI strategies. A large number of vendors behind on integrating AI into their offerings. Lots of available data, but is it clean and can companies act on the insights? How is your company adopting AI? Is it an internal capability? Vendor-led? Or “wait-and-see?”

Let’s talk about noise. I, for one, cannot wait for the reduction in noise pollution that could come with the transition to electric vehicles. But there has been some debate about what a reduction in engine noise might mean for the safety of pedestrians. As part of their commitment to greener, safer roads, since 2019, all car manufacturers have been required to install an acoustic sound system in new types of electric vehicles to improve road safety and provide greater confidence to vulnerable road users. So, steps are being taken. And let me be very clear, road users must always put the safety of pedestrians above all else – that goes without saying. However, I think we the public also need to take responsibility for our own road safety too. For example, by having an awareness for distractions caused by the use of phones and noise cancelling headphones. Ultimately, staying safe on our roads is about giving appropriate care and attention to our own road safety, and that of those around us. #evs #electricvehicles #noisepollution InstaVolt

Pressurized gas (liquefied) electrolyte is a new variant that joins the series of liquid electrolyte, solid electrolyte, semi-solid electrolyte.   It is supposed to be better for charging at low temperatures, safer and less costly.
