Today is Zero Discrimination Day, a time for us to reflect on the advancements to achieve equality and fairness for everyone. Over the last year, attacks on the rights of women and girls, LGBTI people, and other marginalised communities have been on the rise. This year’s theme, “We stand together,” is a call to action for all our communities to remember that upholding everyone’s rights is everyone’s responsibility. We can all play a part in ending discrimination. IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The text “Zero Discrimination Day, We stand together, 01 Mar” is at the top of the image with an illustration of diverse people standing together below. Established in 1978, ILGA World has ECOSOC consultative status at the United Nations. Our member organisations are based in our six regions: Pan Africa ILGA, ILGA Asia, ILGA-Europe, ILGALAC (Latin America and the Caribbean), ILGA North America and ILGA Oceania. Governed by an elected Board of 19 activists representing our global family, ILGA World is queer democracy in action!

We invite you to an in-person side event at the 58th UN Human Rights Council, addressing preventable maternal mortality and morbidity - critical global health challenges that still claim an estimated 287,000 deaths every year. Join this discussion that will highlight why strengthening health systems, removing barriers to accessing health care and ensuring sexual and reproductive health and rights are necessary to improve women and girls’ health. The event is organised together with the Sexual Rights Initiative (SRI), the International Dalit Solidarity Network, the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID), Frontline AIDS, the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH), Women Deliver, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), and the Center for Reproductive Rights. As we close LGBT+ History Month, we share a bit more on the 11th ILGA World Conference, which took place in Vienna, Austria, in July 1989. It was considered one of the most successful at the time, with 260 delegates from 33 countries representing every continent. Importantly, at this conference, Simon Nkoli, who was imprisoned for 3 years on treason charges in South Africa for his anti-apartheid work and openly discriminated against for being gay, shared his experience and gratitude for the support of the international community. As part of LGBT+ History Month, we are sharing an interesting part of ILGA World and Brazil's history! The 17th ILGA World Conference was the first to take place in South America in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June of 1995. This conference shaped a critical part of ILGA World's history as the first Pride march in Brazil was organised during this time. The monumental march led to a drastic increase in positive media attention and government support, leading to the launch of the bill giving legal recognition to same-sex civil unions.
