#WordOfTheWeek🧩 Have you ever heard of ESOs? Enterprise Support Organisations are entities that provide business development services to enterprises, helping them to grow, innovate, and scale. ESOs play a critical role in supporting agrifood Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) by offering tailored support that includes capacity building, access to finance, business development, and technical assistance. In Kenya, 30-40% of perishable foods are lost due to inadequate post-harvest handling, and only 45% of agribusinesses meet food safety standards—limiting market access. This is where GAIN’s Nutrition Impact at Scale (NIS) Project steps in. By partnering with Enterprise Support Organisations (ESOs) like Afriscope Research Limited and Nakuru Box Innovation Center, we are helping agribusinesses in: ✅ Implementing traceability systems for safer, high-quality food ✅ Training agribusinesses on food safety to reduce losses 📉 ✅ Strengthening value chains with post-harvest technologies Together, we are empowering MSMEs and building a resilient supply chain—one that supports farmers, businesses, and consumers alike across key food value chains! Post-harvest losses cost Pakistan up to $ 90 million annually, reducing food availability and nutrient retention. Hermetic storage technology offers a cost-effective, eco-friendly solution to preserve wheat quality, protect nutrients like zinc and iron, and reduce losses for smallholder farmers. Investing in improved storage techniques is key to ensuring food security, nutrition, and economic stability. #HealthierDiets4All
The #Urgency of Reducing #FoodLoss in Pakistan 🌾 #Pakistan loses over $76 to $90 million due to inadequate wheat storage, with 10% of stored wheat lost to moisture, #pests, and poor #storage conditions. 💡 #Hermetic storage technology offers a game-changing solution, keeping grain airtight, #reducing spoilage, and preserving #nutrition. GAIN Pakistan’s study in South #Punjab shows that smallholder farmers using hermetic storage saw better grain quality and seed viability over #conventional storage methods. 📢 Read more about the findings and the way forward: https://bit.ly/4igs3qL Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) | Farrah Naz | Muhammad Nawaz Shareef University of Agriculture, Multan | AGAHE #FoodSecurity #PostHarvestLoss #HermeticStorage #PakistanAgriculture #GAIN #NutritionConnect

Foodborne illnesses are a major health concern globally, and Africa is no exception. Ethiopia bears a significant share of this burden, with diarrheal diseases ranking as the second highest cause of premature death. Why does this matter? Ethiopia’s food supply chain is largely informal, with traditional markets playing a key role in providing fresh produce, dairy, meat, and fish to millions. However, unsafe food handling practices, lack of hygiene awareness, and minimal infrastructure put consumers at risk of contamination from harmful toxins and microorganisms. 💡 Hint: Check out this new policy brief by Genet Gebremedhin, which highlights key food safety risks in Ethiopia’s traditional markets and offers actionable solutions to improve food safety. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dJyCQ-Ti What key insight stands out for you? Across the world, women drive food systems, from farming and production to processing, distribution, and nutrition. In many developing regions, they make up the majority of the agricultural workforce, yet their contributions remain undervalued. Despite their critical role, barriers persist—limited access to land, credit, and agricultural technologies continue to reinforce gender disparities in food security and economic opportunity. 🎙️ Caroline Atim, Gender Advisor at GAIN in Africa, sheds more light on this critical issue.
