Zalău A hypermarket chain is expanding its portfolio with a new two-storey hypermarket and associated car park in Zalău. Due to the site's geological conditions—requiring deep excavations in the south and embankments in the north—sheet pile walls and pile foundations are the most suitable solution. GEOEG, in collaboration with GreenTAGS, conducted an opportunity study to explore the potential of these energy geostructures. The study demonstrates that these innovative solutions can serve as a viable renewable energy source, capable of covering 100% of the building’s thermal energy needs. By integrating sustainability into building foundations, this partnership continues to drive energy-efficient solutions, reducing environmental impact and enhancing energy independence. 📷 GreenTAGS #Engineering #Geothermal #SustainableDesign #EnergyGeostructures #GEOEGProject

At GEOEG, we foster the multiple roles of the underground, a spatial, material and resourceful medium that can support and host structures and infrastructures, as well as provide renewable energy. From this perspective, we developed a multidisciplinary approach allowing to plan, design, and manage it in the most integrated way. Our expertise covers from conventional applications to innovative and complex systems: • Closed geothermal systems (isolated and fields) • Foundation and structural systems • Thermal energy storage systems • District energy systems • Underground thermal characterisation • Energy foundations and infrastructures for both structural support and energy supply (energy piles, walls, slabs, tunnels, etc ...) • Systems involving complex physical conditions (thermal, mechanical, chemical, hydraulic, etc)

Optimization of geothermal systems When it comes to geothermal systems, thermal performance is key. Our experience at GEOEG shows that an optimized energy design not only enhances the thermal power that can be harnessed from the ground but also significantly reduces the operational costs of ground source heat pump systems. Using advanced numerical models, we can: ✓ Analyze, compare, and define the best geothermal borehole configurations ✓ Optimize pipe layout, location, length, and diameter ✓ Analyze the complex fluid dynamics and heat transfer processes that govern these heat exchangers and can be controlled to maximize performance Are you considering geothermal for one of your new building assets? Let our team help you find the most efficient and sustainable solution. 📷 GEOEG #GeothermalEnergy #Sustainability #Geothermalborehole #Optimization #EnergyEfficiency #Engineering

LightWalk In the heart of Seoul’s Gangnam district, a groundbreaking project designed by Dominique Perrault Architecture is taking shape: the Gangnam International Transit Center. This visionary transportation hub, seamlessly connecting the Bongeunsaro and Tehrananro neighborhoods through the LightWalk landscape project, is now under construction. As part of this transformation, GEOEG performed the schematic design of an energy geostructure system capable of meeting 100% of the thermal energy requirements for naturally and mechanically ventilated areas. By coupling these geostructures with a thermal labyrinth, this design sets a new benchmark for urban energy independence. 📷DPA #UrbanDevelopment #Innovation #Gangnam #TransitCenter #Architecture #GEOEGprojects

Subsurface heat island Did you know that the ground beneath cities is warming up due to subsurface heat islands but this represents an opportunity to enhance the sustainability of cities? Subsurface urban heat islands are a pervasive phenomenon in urban areas worldwide, which can represent an issue for the health of subsurface ecosystems, the comfort of people using mass transit services in the subsurface, and the operation of transportation and civil infrastructure. For the first time, GEOEG quantified the intensity of a subsurface urban heat island for the city of Lausanne, Switzerland, with a twofold goal: (1) identify the major sources of waste heat beneath the city and (2) propose sustainable retrofit interventions in underground environments to enhance the energy efficiency of buildings at the urban scale. Our study resulted in the development of a detailed subsurface thermal cadaster for the city, encompassing localized and diffused drivers of such phenomenon, like building basements, district heating networks, and sewer networks. This tool has not only allowed to identify “underground hot spots” that can be mitigated via the thermal insulation of underground structures but also to identify preferential zones for the deployment of geothermal technologies that can absorb and reutilize part of the heat that would be wasted otherwise in the ground. Are you a city interested in obtaining a comparable assessment to boost your environmental conservation priorities?
