A new report from Energy Futures examines what is required for B.C. to achieve its mandated ZEV sales target of 90% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. The report finds there are significant public charging infrastructure and electricity generation gaps that need to be closed if the government's targets are to be achieved. B.C. is planning on building 10,000 public chargers by 2030, 30,000 less than what is required to support an increasingly electrified fleet. Powering this infrastructure depends on an additional 2,700 GWh of electricity generation capacity. Automakers are committed to helping the provincial government move to a lower carbon economy and increase the number of ZEVs on B.C.'s roads. There are now over 80 ZEV models available in every size and vehicle segment with an additional 40 models expected this year. But achieving these ambitious sales targets depends on stronger consumer support in the form of consumer financial and non-financial incentives, charging infrastructure, grid investments, and education. The oil & gas industry steadfastly refuses to make meaningful progress on absolute emissions, preferring long term kick-the-can-down-the-road strategies that are paid for by taxpayers such as carbon capture and storage and hydrogen megaprojects. Not to mention share buyback and increased payouts to shareholders. The mere act of extracting fossil fuels is now 31% of all Canadian emissions and the remaining 69% comes from burning them. It is time for a capital asset tax on this industry which is proportional to its share of absolute emissions. I.e. 31% of asset book value should be taxable and the proceeds applied to tackle the 69% of emissions caused by their products. Another great article and great share from Rob Karpati about our collective efforts to "democratize" access to finance for ASM projects globally but to also create better opportunities for the mining sector at the intersection of ASM / LSM. What are investing in when you invest in mining - "Everything & Nothing" at the same time. Mining is complex and it needs better financial solutions that will focus on specific "assets class" - nature, decarbonization, brownfield assets, tailing, gender, indigenous, energy, processing, offtake agreements, equipment, technology, and the list goes on. Time is definitely not on our (humanity) side to make this important energy transition as efficient as possible. It's a strong call for collaboration to work on a common Alternative Digital & Regulated Marketplace for the mining sector and its value chain. Financial innovation will be crucial to ensure a fair green and sustainable transition. #mining #criticalminerals

Federal GHG emissions have been reduced by 42% since the baseline year of 2005-2006! The Government of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory for 2023-24 has been released online. I am proud of our RETScreen Software team, which supports the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat | Secrétariat du Conseil du Trésor du Canada and the various federal departments each year to consolidate all the data, ensure data quality and generate summary numbers, using the RETScreen Clean Energy Management Software. And a special shoutout to Sabrina Lachapelle, who leads this effort within the RETScreen Data Onboarding service team. No, the oil sands sector will not save us. Instead they will spew out climate misinformation like oil spewing from their broken uncleaned up pipelines. Collude with the Conservative government to destroy wild-life, future clean energy jobs and make as much money as possible and promote a "let it burn" environmental plan while celebrating natures so called gold. All the while encouraging a generation of climate deniers that are raging up against Canadians and person place or thing that does not collude along with their annalistic plan. No Conservatives and BIG OIL will continue to dance the hand out's game and keep Alberta in the past while destroying not only the environment, but, the oil and gas business as a whole driving the already dipping price of gas/oil. Meanwhile much of the rest of Canada and the world is moving towards clean renewables. Next Danielle Smith and Pierre Poilievre will travel to America to give Trump a high five for his inauguration. As Trump plans his revenge on anyone and everyone that has ever crossed him. Pierre Poilievre is so enamored with Trump I wonder if he will be able to contain himself? I wonder how cheap Trump will get Alberta's oil for? What is the plan people?? Are we just going to let them? How can we stop the craziness? Never-mind America their election is over. What are we going to do about Canada? Can we unify-for our children-for our future-for the Boreal-for our public services? Or are we just too tired? I know I am tired. In the latest sustainability-related regulatory update from S&P Global Sustainable1, we look at Canada’s draft regulations on emission reductions from the oil and gas sector and taxonomy consultations in the UK and Brazil.

The Net Zero Forum organized by The Transition Accelerator/ L’Accélérateur de transition was a resounding success with participants across the energy industry gathering to discuss opportunities for driving Canada to net zero by 2050. Here are some insights from the Electricity session where we discussed what it will take to decarbonize Canada's electricity supply. 1. There was consensus that the transition is technically feasible. We have got the technologies today which can get us to a net zero electric grid. While we would need to more than double our current capacity to achieve net zero by 2050, this is something we have done that in the past when Canada was industrializing. 2. We need the right policies and regulations to ensure that Canada has the skilled workforce for enabling this transition. The federal and provincial governments need to realign their immigration policies with the imminent labour needs of their economies to ensure that we are attracting the right talent from across the globe. 3. While the transition can yield $15 billion in net savings, one third of the energy consumers can be negatively impacted by the transition. This is particularly true for consumers in provinces which are endowed with natural gas and oil reserves and have high electricity rates. We will need to think of ways to protect these customers from the negative impact through innovative rate design and other fiscal instruments. 4. Canada's electricity system is currently fragmented with large variations across provinces in how electricity is produced, managed and governed. Other than two provinces (Alberta and Ontario) where we have independent electricity system operators, rest of the country has vertically integrated and regulated utilities managing the electricity systems. We need a more market based approach to managing and financing our electricity system and energy transition. 5. We also need better integration between eastern and western Canada. This is true not just for the electricity system but also for our decarbonization goals and policies. A unified, whole-of-economy approach is necessary to fulfill climate commitments. 6. Shifting the language around energy transition to emphasize its economic and social benefits is crucial. Integrating these aspects into the narrative addresses public concerns and garners broader support. 7. Last but not the least we need to acknowledge and address the impact of climate change and energy transition on Canada's indigenous communities. Ensuring equitable benefits and inclusion in economic and social development will be essential to prevent marginalization and to garner support of these communities.
