Breaking through buyer fatigue is a challenge for marketing and sales teams as we move into 2025 [and 2024 and 2023 and 2022... ] #patternrecognition Buyers are overwhelmed, and outreach often ends up being more noise than signal. Thought I'd share a major takeaway about #B2B marketing that I've learned at Pinch Marketing Inc: Not all great content performs well. After all, creating a highly engaging, easy-to-consume piece is only half of the battle for marketers. The other half is getting it in front of the right people in a way that makes a memorable impact on them. Unfortunately, content marketing can quickly become overwhelming once you factor in all the data, distribution channels, audience segmentation and constant need for fresh pieces. A lesson from Shopify: Stop obsessing over churn. I just listened to an incredible podcast featuring Archie Abrams, VP of Product and Head of Growth at Shopify, and it left me buzzing with ideas about what it truly means to build a resilient, customer-first business. One question stood out: Why doesn’t Shopify obsess over churn? Here’s what I learned: 1️⃣ Optimize for the long game. Shopify doesn’t view churn as a core problem—it’s a natural outcome of their mission to empower entrepreneurship. Their mindset? If you lower the barriers to entry and help as many people start as possible, a few will scale to massive success. Those success stories make the entire cohort worthwhile, even if churn rates are higher. 2️⃣ Embrace experimentation, but remain accountable. Shopify runs countless experiments, but what’s different is their timeline for accountability. They’re tracking impact years down the line to ensure their initiatives drive sustainable growth—not just short-term spikes. For a founder like me, this is a powerful reminder: shipping fast is important, but the real value comes from continuous learning and long-term refinement. 3️⃣ A hundred-year vision. Shopify’s north star is to build for the next century, not the next quarter. Every decision is grounded in what will benefit their merchants for decades. Here are some takeaways for founders and sales leaders from Lightspeed's 2024 Sales Benchmark Report: 1️⃣ Improved Revenue Attainment: Companies missing revenue targets by over 20% are projected to decrease from 35% in 2022 to just 10% in 2024, with 65% expected to meet or exceed their targets this year. 2️⃣ Rebounding Sales Performance: Sales reps meeting their quotas increased from 33% mid-2023 to 51% by year-end, continuing into 2024. 3️⃣ Deal Slippage Challenges: New deals experience a 41% delay rate, typically 2-3 months; only 62% of these eventually close. 4️⃣ Remote Work Success: 92% of sales teams are fully or partially remote; notably, 88% of high-performing teams operate remotely. 5️⃣ AI Adoption Hurdles: 63% of companies introduced new AI features in 2023, but only 39% of customers use them, and just 33% report these features as margin-positive. My final words as we parted ways: "I loved this job. I loved this company. I loved everything we were building". Unfortunately even amazing dreams come to an end. I empathize with the difficulty of making hard startup decisions and am honoured to leave a lasting impact with clients, partners, industry, and all my former colleagues (good luck to all of you in your own journey). The foundation of every great discovery call isn’t just about asking the right questions. It’s about being fully present and engaged. When you’re in sales for the right reasons—to help others solve complex problems and drive real outcomes—being present is easy. True presence requires genuine curiosity, and that curiosity is rooted in a desire to make a positive impact. To be truly effective in sales, you need to genuinely care about the person on the other side of the call. And to do that, you have to believe in what you’re selling. It’s not about pushing a product; it’s about solving real challenges with solutions you trust. That’s where the magic happens. Let's talk ICP. This week I have spoken with 3 clients about it, and it was a topic of conversation with a couple folks at a recent GTMfund dinner in Toronto. The common thread is that most Sales orgs are not getting deep enough with their understanding of the market that they sell into. "𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐈𝐂𝐏?" Typical response: n# of employees, X industries, Y titles. Great data points, and helpful context when building lists. But there is no context here, no 'why', no triggers/signals/insert other buzzword that allows to actually know when our prospects need a solution. At the end of the day, we as sellers are solving specific problems with our products, and we are looking for organizations and contacts that are currently experiencing that exact problem. Company size, roles, and industries rarely paint that whole picture. So where do we start? When building out your ICP approach it's important to start at the top of the funnel, and work your way down. (Told you - big funnel guy) 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐮𝐬? 𝐖𝐡𝐲?  Answer this by talking to customers, combing through existing customer reports, learning from churned orgs., and looking at the companies that came inbound to you. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 ^ 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧? Raises, new hires, growth stages, public documents, social posts, changes in industry regulations are all examples of this. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞? If you cannot connect the dots here, you are likely coming across as far too generic in your messaging. The classic "why you, why you now" approach. 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐲, 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞? 𝐖𝐡𝐲? Go back to the data, follow deals, talk to customers. Go through these questions and your prospecting will become much more targeted, which will lead to increased email and call metrics, and will likely book you a bunch more deals. Think about how many "no's" or no responses are the result of you reaching out to people who simply don't care. You can eliminate so many of those by paying more attention to your true ICP. How does your prospecting look today? Is your current iteration of ICP helping or hurting it?

Is cold emailing dying? In short: Yes I know, ironic coming from me. We've built our entire business around helping organizations with their cold email strategies. But the data doesn't lie: → The average open rate for cold emails has dropped from 24% in 2018 to 18% in 2023 (HubSpot). → The average response rate for cold emails is around 1% (Reply.io). And those responses aren't all positive. → 43% of recipients report marking cold emails as spam based on irrelevant content or too frequent emails (Litmus). Cold emailing has become a game only elite reps can succeed at. ❌ Pure cold emailing is dying a fast death The mass blast approach. Sending thousands of unpersonalized cold emails. More emails are being sent to spam. Gone are the days of teams of SDRs sending random cold emails to accounts who have no idea who your company is. Cold emailing cannot be used to create demand. Let's not kid ourselves. SDR teams aren't going to be educating executives at scale. ✅ "Inbound-ish" cold emailing is the present and the future Adam Robinson brilliantly calls this "inbound-led outbound." The concept is simple: create great thought leadership to attract prospective buyers into your ecosystem and then engage them with personalized cold emails. → Host webinars or live sessions and follow up with attendees via email. → Publish articles or white papers (that don't suck) and email them to your target audience. → Create podcasts and email summaries or highlights to your prospects. → Develop guides and email them to your leads. → Share valuable social content and follow up with personalized emails. → Organize in-person or virtual events and email attendees post-event. Use marketing to create demand. And use cold emails to proactively start conversations and capture that demand. Pro tip: Partner up with non-competing heavy-hitters in your industry, create content together, and share the leads through targeted email campaigns. ✅ Intent/Signal-based cold emailing This is where outbound sales teams should spend the majority of their time. Focus on a sliver of your TAM that's most likely to engage based on timing. → Previous customers who moved to another company → Newly hired or promoted execs → Following your company on LinkedIn → Tech stack → Mutual connections with board, c-suite, etc. → Previous champions in deals etc. Agree or disagree? #coldoutreach #coldemail
