What do you do if you want to establish a powerful network in a niche or sector of venture capital?
Events are a fantastic way to build your network fast. Why? You've got a large group of people all interested in the same thing in one room. Going to events regularly also makes you a recognizable face in the community which is always a benefit. However, the real value in events is found before and after. Reach out to attendees before the event to introduce yourself, and follow up with people you have good conversations with after the event. This is where a relationship can really be built. With the quick interactions that take place at an event, real relationships are hardly ever forged (though I'm sure they are sometimes).

What do you do if you want to establish a powerful network in a niche or sector of venture capital?
I consider myself a generalist. It follows that I think niching down is overrated. I am effective at networking because I lead with curiosity. I'm never the smartest person in a room and I never want to be. Having a broader base of knowledge allows you to relate to more people which helps broaden your network. Niching down, by definition, limits how many people your network could consist of. As a parting comment I would add that part of network is value-adding. If my network is super niche and I am not the go-to expert in that niche, what value can I add for the expert? If I have a broader base of knowledge, there is almost certainly something I could teach even the foremost experts.

I am investigating how different material properties have an effect on the bounce characteristics of a ball. A large focus of my project is on comparing the bounce mechanisms for hollow balls as opposed to solid balls. I am looking at how their bounce characteristics vary with material properties such as hardness, stiffness, and viscoelasticity. I am using Instron equipment to measure material properties and a high speed video camera in order to capture video data that I then digitize in order…

International Award for Young People
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award
I completed my gold level award in April of 2012. Prior to this I had also completed the bronze and silver level awards. Each level entails a physical aspect, a skill aspect, and a service aspect. The requirement for the skill aspect is to learn a new skill and continue to practice it for a certain amount of time. So, by the end of the gold award, I had learned three different skills. Especially for the gold award, this aspect was difficult to complete due to academic responsibilities. However, it does a good job of teaching perseverance. The three skills I learned was learning to play the drums, learning to play the guitar, and cooking. The service aspect of the award requires the candidate to complete a set amount of hours of community service. For these service activities, I completed a variety of different projects, including a Halloween party for orphans hosted by my church, Habitat for Humanity, and visits to Father Joe's Mercy Center which is an orphanage with a very large number of children living with AIDS. Finally, the physical aspect of this award was also different for each level. Bronze level was trekking, silver level was white water rafting, and gold level was cycling. So this award taught each candidate much more than how to live through 150km of cycling without internet for a week. It really helps the candidates to open their eyes to the realities of the world and to broaden their personal range of capabilities.
