It's interesting to see Deepinder Goyal's comments about this acquisition. He believes building a super brand (Zomato, Blinkit, and now District with Paytm Insider) is more important than building a super app (a Paytm-like aggregator). From a product perspective, this makes a lot of sense. You open a specific app for a specific action and don't get lost in the myriad choices an aggregator offers. The objective of doing one thing—and doing it well—always yields benefits. The larger trend of shifting focus from a simple Customer LTV to Portfolio LTV is prevalent across other domains too. Quite a few global mobile game companies have been trying to do the same. #D2C Brands: #QuickCommerce—A Game-Changer or a Threat? Over the last 1-2 years, I’ve been urging D2C brands to embrace Quick Commerce (QC). Today, it’s no longer optional—it’s the most transformative shift in consumer behavior since marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart emerged. If you still have the relationships and the window, this is land-grab time! How Did We Get Here? The Early Marketplace Era (Amazon/Flipkart): • These platforms disrupted traditional distribution, creating challenges for legacy brands. Sales attribution, conflicting regional offers, and the alienation of local distributors made it hard for older players to adapt - while customers were loving the home delivery (behaviour change #convenience over #familiarity) • Challenger brands thrived: Delivering to 1-2 locations with monthly POs, better margins, and national visibility. Marketplaces made them discoverable, even if delivery took 2-3 days (customers were still happy). The Shift to Quick Commerce: • QC has redefined online retail, emphasizing speed, convenience, and instant availability (huge change / #convenience over #novelty). • Unlike marketplaces, QC tilts the game in favor of older brands, thanks to: - Multiple delivery points engaging local distributors. - Weekly POs and instant stock replenishment, a system legacy players already excel at. - Profitable unit economics, making QC sustainable for established players. What Does This Mean for D2C Brands? The channel that once gave challenger brands a platform is now leveling the playing field—and if D2C brands don’t act fast, legacy players will reclaim dominance. Why? • QC’s dark store model stocks limited options, prioritizing what’s available fastest. • Customers won’t wait—they’ll pick brands they recognize or that are ready to deliver within minutes. Lessons from Abroad #Gorillas (Europe), a QC pioneer, opened doors for newer, niche brands. But legacy FMCG giants quickly leveraged their deep supply chains to stock dark stores at scale. With faster fulfillment, they edged out smaller brands, proving that in QC, availability and recall trump novelty. #Deliveroo (UK) disrupted grocery shopping with its Deliveroo Hop service, promising 10-minute deliveries. Based on IDC data on price segment-wise shares, here are my observations: 1. The Entry Level segment has declined since Q2 2023. Analysts feel it should go up with the collaboration between chipset vendors and brands through their offering of sub Rs. 8500 5G smartphones. I have written a lot on the fact that I am not very confident of the success of this thought. To me in the long run the segment will decline. 2. The share of the basic segment in Q2 2024 was the same as in 2023. It did show a bit of a spike in Q1 2024. However, I would expect it to remain in this range or rather go down as and when 5G devices below Rs 8500 get launched. Being the largest it makes sense for brands to get their volumes from here. 3. The Entry premium segment has shown a good jump being an upgrade segment for the existing Basic category 5G customers and I would expect it to grow further. There is an opportunity for brands to target this segment which happens to be the second largest in volumes. 4. The Mid Premium segment is a small segment that has been between 3-5% since 2022. In Q2 2024 the entry Premium segment was pushed up at the cost of the Entry segment. I would expect something similar to happen here with a rise in the Mid Premium segment though in small %’s. 5. The premium segment has primarily N-1 and N-2 models of iPhones with some quantities of Samsung and OnePlus. This segment should also not grow and as such can be avoided by other brands till such time that they uplift their brand image. 6. The Super Premium segment is basically a segment for iPhones and Samsung presently. We can see it from the fact that its contribution came down from 9% to 7% between Q1 and Q2 2024 as both iPhone and Samsung sales in this segment took a hit. It will rise again in Q3, Q4 and Q1 when Apple and Samsung launch their new range of high end devices. 7. Vivo is the only brand which appears in the top 3 between the Basic and the mid premium segment

𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐙𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐨'𝐬 $5 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞? 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐈 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬! Zepto's recent $340 million fundraise at a $5 billion valuation is a bold investment on Indian urban consumer. But why are VCs willing to pay such a high price? In my view, it's all about "𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞". We're seeing a shift in consumer behavior, especially among the top 1-2% of urban consumers. This shift towards quick commerce seems irreversible, and over the long term, if consumers continue to pay delivery charges, this deal could be a real bargain. Fundamentally, ecommerce grew big because of 3 reasons. Consumers want cheaper goods, high selection and at a faster pace. Quick commerce, ticks two of these points and is already offering large enough selection for daily needs. Here's how I see Zepto compared to DMart: Zepto is currently at $1.5 billion annualized sales rate, 400 dark stores. Raised $665M at $3.6B valuation in June 2024, followed by $340M at $5B valuation, 3.3x annual sales. DMart (2017): Raised 1870 Cr at ~$2.7B valuation, ~1.6x annual sales. Currently valued at ~$38B with 5% profit net margins. Current sales are at $6 B. So why are the VCs betting so confidently on Zepto? Quick commerce growth rate is outpacing traditional retail. Zepto can personalize at scale—higher SKU count leads to better experiences. Higher margin products give them an edge over brick-and-mortar stores. Sure, the next 3-5 years will require substantial burn, and competition will increase, driving up CAC. But early entrants like Zepto have an advantage in forming consumer habits. If they can continue delivering and eventually pass delivery charges onto customers, Zepto's cost structure could align with larger brick and mortar players. Indian retail market will hit 1 Trillion USD by 2027 and there is enough space for all forms of organized retail players and unorganized too. IMO, no format will get disrupted but quick commerce will be a niche of it's own, possibly grabbing some share from ecommerce.
