How cool is this! This is a demo of a new Vertex Block Descent simulation method from Anka He Chen the team at the University of Utah. I can't wait to see vfx implementations to this and see what can be done. It looks like it could be a step forward for Creature work for tet-meshed based sims like muscles, flesh, and cloth. Check out this animated dialogue project from Gnomon student PoHsuan Lin. This was made in our Creature Animation 1 course using Maya, Nuke, and After Effects. PoHsuan used dialogue from "American Psycho" to create an unexpectedly intense exchange between these two creatures. Part 1 of 3D Modeling: When I did 3D modeling on MAYA back in Middlesex College I found the process interesting with the program. For those that know about the program, it is pretty darn useful when you start building from the ground up using digital space putty (that I describe them as when thinking about it) that can be sculpted, shaped, and manipulated into whatever the user can think of. Though I never used this other program I know that Blender has also been compared so that was interesting. Anyway, using the default shapes provided by MAYA at first was a great 1st step to start with, but later I learned how important the LINES are on a shape. It can make or break the model that you would want to create depending on the ones you DELETE or ADD as you proceed. The big reason for that will result in how the HIGH POLY comes out. Wait what is that? To put it into simple terms, you can switch between two poly forms with HIGH POLY being the final result. The LOW POLY mode (press 1 key in MAYA) is the original jagged edge shape of a poly shape before the result of the HIGH POLY mode. Adding lines to specific shape parts adds more detail to HIGH POLY. But what the heck is HIGH POLY? When I mentioned it as the "final result" it meant that MAYA uses a lot of data information to smooth out the shape to have the resemblance of.......pottery. Sorry if that doesn't make any sense at first but if you used a cylinder and added hundreds of lines (exaggeration by the way) you would be reminded of that as well. I usually found myself looking at this paper provided by my professor. Next, I'll be talking about UV MAPPING and then show what I got. Feel like this is going well so far.

Agora.Studio cinematic director Sebastien Dussault had this to say about directing this sequence: "Previz serve multiple purposes, they showcase visual intentions for staging, character blocking, and general scene flow. They help validate gameplay triggers (Enter & exit character states), scene geography, and required bespoke assets. The previz video is also used as a guide for motion capture planning and shotlist creation. As you can notice in this comparison video there are some notable changes between the previz and the final sequence. The previz are just the first pass on a sequence and, over the course of production, some sequences evolve more than others. In this specific case, we knew that we wanted to start the scene showcasing an animal. The intention remained but the initial animal was changed. We replaced the bird with a swimming rat to leverage water reflections and proximity to Catfish, enhancing the scene’s visual appeal and making it more intriguing." For the past few weeks, I've teaching my VFX ( Visual Effects) students at Seneca Polytechnic how to texture an asset using Mari powerful node graph. I find when texturing in Mari you have to be organized or else you'll be confused. This is the demo for a simple Thompson NFA based regex engine implemented through Bifrost native nodes. No C++. There are plenty of features missing (which I won't add) and this is everything but optimized, but it was a good learning experience. I just wrote a simple Python script in Houdini to streamline the creation of Null nodes, and I'm thrilled to share the details: 📍 Cursor Position: If no nodes are selected, a Null node is created right at the cursor position. 🌿 Branching Nodes: For nodes without outputs, the script creates a Null node for each output branch. 🔗 Connecting Nodes: For nodes with outputs, the script inserts a Null node between the selected node and its outputs, maintaining all connections seamlessly. ♻️ Null Handling: If a Null node or a node with a Null output is selected, the script adjusts it to match the appearance of other Null nodes created by the script, instead of creating a new one. 🎯 Multiple Nodes: The script handles multiple selected nodes perfectly, ensuring each one is processed correctly. I've also made an effort to make the new Null node naming as descriptive as possible.
