A joint study prepared by the Real Property Association of Canada (REALPAC), the CAGBC | Canada Green Building Council, and the PLACE Centre calls for concerted action to accelerate the process of decarbonizing commercial buildings in Canada. "The commercial real estate industry is ready to lead, but success will depend on strong partnerships across government, utilities, tenants, the appraisal community, financial institutions, and the private sector," Michael Brooks, CEO of REALPAC, said in a release. His remarks were echoed by Thomas Mueller, president and CEO of CAGBC: "This report provides a clear roadmap for aligning government incentives, leveraging innovative technologies, and driving market demand to achieve net-zero emissions at scale." The release of the Canada Green Buildings Strategy (CGBS) is a much-needed step along the pathway to net zero for Canada’s building sector. It includes clear, achievable policies that make good economic sense, including: • phasing out home heating oil in new construction  • working towards replacing new air conditioner sales with heat pumps (as we recommended last year in The Cool Way to Heat Homes)  • modernizing the Energy Efficiency Act, originally adopted back in 1992  • a continued commitment to decarbonizing federal investments in public infrastructure assets These policies will create much-needed momentum towards Canada’s decarbonization goals. The next—and more difficult—step will be addressing areas where the economics are more complex. Reaching our decarbonization goals can’t come at the cost of energy affordability, and Canada’s local and provincial governments need to work alongside the federal government to promote policies enable an efficient, effective transition. The Climate Smart Buildings Alliance (CSBA), a joint project between EllisDon, RBC, and Mattamy Homes, is launching the Responsible Buildings Pact, a cross-industry agreement aimed at increasing the use of low carbon materials in the built environment 🙌 This initiative was unveiled this afternoon at the CAGBC | Canada Green Building Council’s Building Lasting Change conference in Toronto, with over 20 companies committing to the Pact. “Recognizing the business realities everyone faces, the Pact is designed to ensure we are all doing our best to reduce the climate impacts of our industry, and to create more transparency and shared accountability across the value chain.” - David Messer, Director of Climate Smart Buildings Alliance. The development of self-storage facilities is booming across Western Canada, reproted Western Investor. "Rising costs and the densification of housing in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland are creating a surge in demand for self-storage among residents and businesses. The limited supply of convenient space is also attracting developers and companies like Pockit, SmartStop and U-Haul wanting to expand their self-storage footprints." 35- and 39-Storey Towers Proposed Near Glencairn Station A new application from Osmington Gerofsky Development Corp would introduce 35- and 39-storey towers to a block currently developed with low-rise buildings. Designed by Wallman Architects, the dual towers in #Toronto's Glen Park neighbourhood respond to the designation of the area surrounding the subway station as a Major Transit Station Area within which the Province is enabling and encouraging higher densities. This proposal features a total Gross Floor Area (GFA) of 58,739m², for a Floor Space Index (FSI) of 10.41 on the site. The towers would rise from a six-storey podium that transitions to an eight-storey volume between the towers.
