🤔After the CED event yesterday and our latest look at Alberta’s economic growth, I’m left with a question that never really goes away for me: Are we truly growing together, or is it just some of us moving forward? That question drives everything I do—whether it’s building Calgary Catalyst, leading communications at Pedesting, or sharing insights from every session I attend. I believe in collective growth, and I know Calgary has what it takes to make it happen. But are we there yet is a question every leader has to ask themselves. I’m inspired by the progress we’re making—like Calgary’s strong entrepreneurial support programs and our advocacy for inclusivity. How far are we and what can we do to achieve equitable growth in all aspects. It reminds me of that line from Trolls: No troll left behind😅 Silly yet mighty! Here are some of my thoughts on how we can make collective growth possible in Calgary: 1. Support local businesses: Did you know that for every dollar spent at a local business, 68 cents stays in the community? 2. 📚 Invest in education: Alberta’s tech sector is booming, but there’s a skills gap holding us back. 3. Make housing affordable: It’s hard to talk about economic growth when many in Calgary can’t afford a stable place to live. 4. Champion fair wages: In Calgary, living costs are rising, yet wages aren’t keeping up for many. 5. Encourage entrepreneurship: Calgary is already known for its entrepreneurial spirit, with over 45,000 small businesses calling it home. Can we make it even better? How? 6. Facilitate access to capital: For too many aspiring entrepreneurs, access to capital feels like a closed door. ATB Financial is doing a great job of putting a distinctly Alberta lens on macro issues via its timely insights like the Twenty Four Seven newsletter. This morning their experts rapidly painted a picture of what the rail work stoppage means for this resource-rich province. "In Alberta, international merchandise exports alone (i.e. excluding interprovincial shipments) totalled $20.2 billion by rail in 2023 or about 12% of the province’s total international exports ... Agriculture is a primary rail user: 94% of Canadian grain moves by rail, according to the Grain Growers of Canada. The timing of the stoppage is particularly problematic due to it being harvest season." Wildfires are now moving in on Canada's oil sands. Cenovus Energy and Suncor are just some of the companies seeing dozens of new wildfires affect production across Alberta. The spreading fires have lifted the price of heavy crude, with Cenovus, Suncor, and Imperial Oil seeing fires moving closer to production sites in the last few days. Canada unexpectedly recorded a $638 million trade surplus in June as an expanded crude oil pipeline and surging global demand for gold drove exports higher…. The rise in exports captures the impact of the Trans Mountain pipeline’s expansion, which began commercial operations in May. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government spent billions to complete the near-tripling in capacity of a line that runs from Alberta’s oilsands to a Vancouver-area port. Exports of energy products were up 11.7 per cent in June, led by higher exports of crude oil. Business discussions, such as the Banff Forum and Magnetic North Business Conference, focus on Canada's economic potential, emphasizing critical minerals, infrastructure challenges, and sustainable development. Banyan Gold Corporation reports a 93% gold recovery from its Powerline Deposit at the AurMac Project, with a preliminary economic assessment planned for 2025. In community news, a truck and trailer plunged into the Yukon River after missing the Lewes River Bridge. Emergency services responded, but traffic remains unaffected. Authorities urge drivers to be cautious near the site and follow speed limits. Cenovus expects oil sands production to reach 600-610 Mbbls/d in 2024, with key assets including Christina Lake, Foster Creek, Lloydminster Thermals, and Sunrise. Operating costs have been reduced to $10.50 – $12.50 per barrel, reflecting a 12% decrease at the midpoint. Optimization projects, such as the Foster Creek expansion and the Narrows Lake tie-back, are expected to add significant production through 2024 and 2025. The company emphasizes cost leadership and efficiency, with further reductions in operational expenses. Well, isn’t this interesting. BC’s gas utility has been systematically running interference on the adoption of the Zero Carbon Step Code across Vancouver Island. This Code allows local governments to regulate GHGs in new builds. In the case of Victoria, 52% of our GHGs come from the building sector, so if we want cities such as Victoria to reduce their emissions, regulating fossil fuels out of new construction is absolutely essential, while incentivizing retrofits in existing buildings. Now Fortis is getting in the way because it affects their bottom line. That’s not how utilities allegedly committed to climate action should be operating. It’s reminiscent of when Alberta’s fossil fuel “war room” targeted Nanaimo for adopting the same Code last year. Community organizing is about people coming together to make a real difference. It’s about neighbours collaborating to tackle shared issues and create lasting change in their everyday lives and communities. When individuals unite around a common cause, their collective power can move even the biggest of giants. 🌱 By working together, people can push for policy changes, improve and conserve local resources, and perhaps most importantly, hold their elected officials accountable. It’s a way of saying, "We’re stronger when we work together," and turning that belief into action. ✊ One of the beautiful things about community organizing is how it builds leaders from within their movements. As people get involved, they learn to advocate for themselves, and their neighbours, gaining the skills needed that will benefit the entire community.
