Many DTC brands fail at email marketing before ever sending their first email. Here’s why 👇 Most brands fail because they don’t understand this simple fact: The offer displayed on your popup isn’t just for building your email list. It's for filtering out unqualified prospects. How? Certain offers attract freeloaders, while others attract people with buying intent. Think about it – if your popup offer is a discount for joining your email list, only prospects with buying intent will find value in that offer. That means you’ll fill your email list with subscribers willing to purchase your products under the right circumstances. On the other hand, if your popup offer involves a raffle or a free lead magnet, you’re attracting freebie seekers who don’t necessarily want to purchase. This will have a ripple effect across all your email marketing metrics. Particularly click rates and sales conversion rates. You’re dooming your chances of success before your welcome flow even lands in their inbox. Don’t fall for the dopamine trap of mindlessly accumulating subscribers to your email list in exchange for free stuff. My agency completes Klaviyo audits every week. And we find these same things almost every time. 🔘 Missing core flows Below are the 6 flows that drive the most revenue: → Welcome → Abandoned Cart → Customer Winback → Abandoned Browse → 1st to 2nd Purchaser → Abandoned Checkout 🔘 Multiple subscriber lists It's important to keep all of your main subscribers in one list. There will be occasions where you need to use multiple lists, But, ideally, they should all go into one 'master list'. 🔘 Low popup submission rates Popup submission rates should ideally be around 3/4%+. If they're any lower than that, then there's a good chance you either need to tweak the design or revise the conditions that have been set. 🔘 Not utilising segmentation I'd recommend splitting your database by engagement. The 'highly engaged' segment would be anyone in your master list and has engaged in the last 30/45 days. The 'unengaged' segment would be anyone in your master list, but has not engaged in the last 30/45 days. 🔘 Limited testing / analysis While it may seem that all flows and campaigns are performing well, there's likely still room for improvement. You should test things such as: → Different types of segments (engagement / VIP's) → Send times / flow time delays → Email templates → Subject lines 🔘 Branded sending domain not setup We're seeing this less and less since the 1st February, but it still appears. Branded sending domains play an important role in the health of the domain you send emails on. If you haven't set your business up with a branded sending domain, you're likely sending from a shared domain, which can affect deliverability. 🔘 Not enough emails in existing flows Here's what I'd recommend for the core flows. → Welcome: 3-6 emails → Added to Cart: 2-4 emails → Customer Winback: 2-4 emails → Abandoned Browse: 2-3 emails → Post Purchase: 4-8 emails → Abandoned Checkout: 3-4 emails 🔘 Inconsistent campaign sending schedule Something I see often is email campaigns being sent very sporadically. Ensuring that you stick to consistent days/times is important to keep up your engagement levels. 🔘 Email template not following best practice All templates need to be fully optimised for both mobile and desktop. They also need to meet email best practices. 🔘 Highly un-engaged data not being removed There's often a lot of highly unengaged data that gets forgotten about and it's important these records are suppressed. Increase Your Shopify Sales 7% in 7 Minutes? First of all this is not a paid promotion and I am not affiliated in any way with this app. It all started back 7 or 8 years ago when I was trying to scale a few of our supplement brands on Shopify. We were struggling with increasing Customer Acquisition Costs running FB ads at scale so I was desperately looking for ways to increase AOV. Someone suggested Ezra Firestone's OCU - One Click Upsell. Just by adding the POST Purchase Upsells with OCU it literally changed everything overnight. And it only took a few minutes to setup. All of our store's TOTAL sales increased around 7% before we even tried pre-purchase upsells or thank you page offers. OCU has continually improved over the years and now it's possible to see 15%+ increase in total sales if you are really dialed in. If you want a quick boost in sales and AOV on your Shopify store I highly encourage you to try OCU. Install it, set it up and ADD A/B test to everything. What is you only get a 5% increase? Would that be worth taking a few minutes to add one simple app? And there are some competitors to OCU, bottom line is add some kind of post purchase upsell app to your Shopify store ASAP. It's almost like free money! Not sure if they still do this, but OCU sent me "The Belt" for doing over $1 million through the app on one store!!! The pic below of me with the belt is from years ago. I have a friend that is a pro wrestler so I posed with a shirt I made for him and the Zipfiy Million Dollar Seller belt! P.S. it IS ok to have fun in life!!! 😜

You can see here that attacking competitors by name can easily backfire, but how should you approach differentiating against competition instead? This Shopify ad is an example of how much customers hate these direct attacks. While the ad may have been effective in driving clicks, many existing, former, and future customers will find them tasteless. You can see in the comments that they react extremely negatively, and take the opportunity to start sharing all their negative feedback on Shopify. All of a sudden, this ad becomes a magnet for negative reviews from real customers. Ad: “Disjointed retail data? See why brands are switching to Lightspeed” Comment: “We use shopify and our retail data is disjointed AF. Pretty unprofessional to slag your competition like that, especially when your own data sucks”. Yikes. I’ve had a few clients who have expressed interest in finding a way to attack their competitors, and there is a better way IMO. Instead of directly attacking a competitor by name, I think it’s more effective to highlight the differences between how your approach problems. So an easy example for GTM Social - I can highlight one key difference in approach with me vs other content agencies: “Hey - I don’t sell the A-team and then have you working with a B-team of writers. Instead, I write everything, and you work with me directly”. If you’re selling a better product or service, it’s better to spend more time highlighting strengths in areas that you know competitors are deficient in. Decision makers are sophisticated enough to put the pieces together. I think a sub-lesson of this ad is also to avoid marketing on features that your customers don’t believe are your strengths. Marketing team thought “disjointed retail data” was a strong differentiator, but customers seem to disagree!

Don’t get SCAMMED by Shopify Site Speed “Experts”... Over the past 6 months, I noticed a massive increase in recommendations for these “affordable” Shopify site speed optimization services. Typically, it’d be a service priced between $100 to $500, that takes 5-7 days to implement and guaranteed a page speed insights score of 90% or more. Well, I hate to break it to you, but if you ever opted for one of these services, you probably got scammed. There’s a reason some of the biggest Shopify stores in the world spent tens of thousands of dollars moving to Hydrogen/Headless… When it comes to loading times, every single millisecond delay means potential revenue lost, but you’re better off not doing anything, than hiring one of these Shopify site speed experts. Do you want to know what they actually do? They add a script to your website that detects if the page is being loaded using a page speed testing tool. This script then BLOCKs the browser from loading most of the resources, resulting in MUCH higher page speed scores, than what they really are. Worst of all? All of these “experts” are using the same types of scripts, which are OFTEN vulnerable to malware and can create a ton of other issues with your Shopify store. Unless you plan on doing a whole dev project (if you’re at a point where your store is big enough to justify it), stay away from these “affordable” site speed optimization services.

The results were instant: 1. Exit rate dropped by 19% 2. Conversion rate for these users increased by 28% 3. Average cart value shot up as people added items to hit the $50 threshold 💡 Pro Tip: Use OptiMonk to create urgency. For another client, we set up a countdown timer for flash sales. FOMO is real! If an ASIN does not get the top 3 Clicks & Conversions on the top 15 focused keywords of a Brand then the keyword targeting campaigns needs an overhauling.. The only place to find if you missed the top 3 Clicks & Conversions for your focused keywords is "Top Search Term" Report. 😎 In general more than 50% of all click share for a search term is owned by the top 3 clicked ASINs and more than 30% of the Order share is also owned by the top 3 clicked ASINs.. and this number will vary based on the Search Term type being Brand, Generic or Competitors. So, firstly as a Brand we should identify and monitor our performance for the top 15 which should be 5 each for Brand, Generic & Competitors keywords.. You can identify this based on the Search Volume that that keyword has and the the relevanr CR % for that Keyword.. If you know your top 15 focused keywords then you should weekly monitor the number of Clicks & Order share you own for those keywords. The number of times a Search Term is searched in last 24 hours is calculated against all the search terms searched on Amazon and a Search Frequency Rank is assigned to a Search Term and if any of your focused keywords has lost the rank or gained rank then that means the search volume for that keyword has decreased or increased respectively compared to previous week or month. If the rank is constant then that means that the Search Volume for your keyword is constant. So, while you are monitoring the Clicks & Conversion Share of your ASINs you should also constantly monitor if your focus keyword is gaining or losing SFR (Search Frequency Rank) if your SFR is constant that means the keyword that you are focusing is not growing in the search volume. SFR Report is not just about optimising your keyword campaign strategy but it is also about optimising your product targeting campaigns. Let me tell you how, if you missed the click against the top 3 ASINs then it also means that you now know the 3 ASINs which got the clicks where your customers have gone so you can take those 3 ASINs and add them in your product targeting campaigns in SP & SB and also in Contextual Targeting campaign in SD. The above strategy will make sure that you have got your share of impressions and a potential click share for your focused keywords. If your see that the click share for your ASIN is very high but the conversion share is not good enough then you know that it's time you rejig your offer or optimise your product page to increase your CR %. Top Search Term report is one of the most important reports that a Amazon Seller should monitor and use the insights to feed the Advertising Campaigns. Here's how: Many Shopify brands focus only on their own product, missing key insights from their rivals. The brands that win are the ones that leverage competitive analysis to stay ahead. 1. Start with Product Research Dive into your competitors' offerings: - Pricing - Product bundles - Unique selling points (USPs) Pro Tip: Buy from your top competitor. Experience their entire customer journey. How does their packaging compare? How does their website flow? This will reveal opportunities for your brand to differentiate. 2. Study Their Marketing Channels Analyze their social media, emails, and ads. Are they running frequent promotions? What content gets engagement? If you notice a heavy discount strategy, consider focusing on long-term value instead of short-term sales tactics. 3. Track Customer Reviews Your competitors' customers will tell you exactly where they’re falling short. Look for recurring complaints—like slow shipping or lackluster product quality—and use that insight to improve your own offers. 4. Leverage Their Tech Stack Tools like BuiltWith let you see what apps and tech your competitors use. Spot inefficiencies? Invest in better tools to gain an edge. This is Harley Finkelstein. He's the president of Shopify, the platform I've admired and used for over a decade. In this video, Harley is proudly talking about the Q3 results and how Shopify is growing, has had a 20% increase in quarter over quarter for the past 5 quarters... And then I stopped listening. Sure, I'm happy for them and it's a great platform, but they're not listening to their merchants. I say this because it's almost unanimous among merchants that their customer support has declined for the last 2 years. You used to be able to hop on a chat with a "guru" (yes, that's what their CSRs were called back in the day) and they actually enoyed helping you figure out an issue. Now, you have to jump through hoops, bypass an AI chat-bot that doesn't have all the answers to get a CSR in the chat that barely knows what e-commerce is. Shopify, much like Google, has lost track of the reason people fell in love with their brand. They're all for profits now. They used to care about their users. Don't get me wrong, the platform is absolutely amazing, rock solid and user friendly, no doubt about that. I hope I get reminders from friends and loyal clients about why I'm in business: I care about people and their dreams of building a healthy business. Yes, I need to put food on the table, so I can't do it for free, but people and results first. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.
