Success comes from either repeating the same mistakes so many times you get bored and do something else you can be good at — or changing your approach . Changing your approach means changing your mind - and this means not what you think - but how you think and why? Once you ask better quality questions of yourself you gain better results — because you know what doesn’t work from experience and create solutions of what to do that will. Consequently the post is an erroneous illustration of repetition creating success. The dog has learned through previous experience to draw the water to itself - and thus the ball, some dogs are often more intelligent than humans as they show dedication and awareness that humans don’t . The dog can’t use a stick to get the ball so it adapts its thinking to overcome the problem . Humans have choice and decide all too early that they can’t achieve because they are born into a negatively polarised society and self defeat - because their brains have been suppressed into convergent thinking by the school system and lack the creative problem solving to find success - and get distracted as a defence mechanism caused by the self doubt . The dog doesn’t have any of these problems.

Pains • Leadership Context: Leaders are expected to empathize with public “pains” such as inflation, healthcare costs, and other daily struggles. • Harris’s Response: Harris missed the chance to acknowledge public challenges, potentially alienating those looking for empathy and recognition. • Lesson for Leaders: Recognize and address the “pains” your stakeholders feel. Empathy builds loyalty and trust, while overlooking challenges can lead to disconnection. 3. Gains • Leadership Context: People seek progress and benefits, whether in quality of life or business improvements. • Harris’s Response: Without recognizing areas for improvement, her response lacked forward-looking optimism. • Lesson for Leaders: Clearly articulate how your efforts benefit stakeholders. This shows a commitment to their desired “gains” and reinforces trust. Conclusion for Business Leaders For leaders in any context—whether in politics, corporate settings, or startups—the “Profile Map” elements can serve as a critical reminder. On Complexity ... Complexity is not something that most can handle with grace; and it takes some work to get there. Jennifer Garvey Berger wrote some years back on some classic traps we encounter as soon as we deal with complexity. 5 Mindtraps: 1. Trapped by simple stories. Your desire for a simple story blinds you to a real one. 'Leaders who put too much faith in their heroic tales of the past and project simplistic versions of the future can be alluring - and ruinous. To escape we need to find our way out of simple stories and back into our complex real ones.' 2. Trapped by rightness. Just because it feels right doesn't make it right. 'When leaders believe they are right in a complex world, they become dangerous, because they ignore data that might show them they are wrong; they don't listen well to those around them; and they get trapped in a world they have created rather than the one that exists.' 3. Trapped by agreement. Longing for alignment robs you of good ideas. 'Too much agreement, while pleasant, makes us follow a narrow path rather than expanding our solution space.' 4. Trapped by control. Trying to take charge strips you of influence. 'When we care about big, complex, intertwined issues, leadership requires the counterintuitive move of letting go of control in order to focus on creating the conditions for good things to happen - often with outcomes better than we had originally imagined.' 5. Trapped by ego. Shackled to who you are now, you can't reach for who you'll be next. 'Though we rarely admit it to ourselves or others, we also spend quite a lot of our energy protecting our seemingly fragile ego....When we try to defend our egos rather than grow and change, we end up perfectly designed for a world that happened already, instead of growing better able to handle the world that is coming next.' Business model innovation is pivotal for all business at one time or the other to remain competitive in the ever evolving marketplace. There’s plenty of great literature dealing with this topic to help leaders navigate this complex environment, but maybe one that stands above the rest, in my opinion, is the work done by Clayton M. Christensen. Navigating the evolution of a business model is akin to captaining a ship through changing seas – it requires foresight, adaptability, and an understanding of the journey ahead. As leaders delve into the realms of business model innovation, it’s important to explore the three critical stages that shape the journey of a business model. These stages are profoundly illustrated by Clayton M. Christensen and colleagues in the MIT Sloan Management Review article, originally published in 2016👇. In the *Creation* phase, businesses are in the throes of market-creating innovations. The name of the game is flexibility and understanding the job to be done. It's not just about solutions, but about crafting the right questions that lead to those groundbreaking solutions. As you sail into the *Sustaining Innovation* phase, the waters get a bit more familiar. Here, sustaining innovations are paramount – it's all about refining and enhancing the value proposition to stay ahead. Here we’ve moved from simply asking questions to interpreting the rich data about our customers and markets, which guides our steady process emergence. Then, there's the *Efficiency* phase – the quest for operational excellence. Efficiency innovations take center stage, as does a more rigid business model that zeroes in on cost management. This phase demands a delicate balance of maintaining what works and cutting away what doesn’t, all in the pursuit of cost-effective scaling. Throughout this journey, the interdependencies between value proposition, resources, profit formula, and processes are intricate and vital. Understanding and managing these relationships is what distinguishes a thriving business from a struggling one. So, ask yourself: Are you nurturing your business model through its evolutionary stages? Are you prepared to be flexible, insightful, and efficient as you captain your ship through these waters? Storytelling is a powerful strategy tool. I recently co-facilitated an online learning session with fellow IAF member John Kingsley Cornwell. It was one of several sessions within the IAF’s Global Learning Series which explore the 6 Core Competencies of professional facilitators. John and I created a very simple session design for the two-hour workshop. The main tool was storytelling: sharing stories and experiences as a means to learn from each other. It was immensely successful. When the time was up, no one wanted it to end! That is the power of storytelling. Storytelling goes beyond mere public speaking; it is a tool to inspire, motivate, and enhance learning. Stories are a means to convey messages, values, and experiences, fostering engagement and connection among people. The human brain gravitates towards simplicity, and stories provide a sense-making instrument by simplifying complex ideas and details. When information is clear and orderly, our brains find it easier to process and remember, making storytelling a powerful communication tool. Stories captivate the mind and heart, transcending traditional communication and learning methods. Storytelling touches the essence of our humanity, making it one of the best tools for creating lasting connections.
