Thanks to ACOA - APECA for their continued support as we work towards improved crop quality and safety with our revolutionary crop testing technology. The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), is providing GLA with a $472,000 non-dilutive, repayable contribution to acquire data analysis expertise, implement data processing software, and move its operations to a larger facility. We applaud the Government of Manitoba, Government of Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada/ Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada and Wab Kinew for this move! 👏 Farming may in fact be an “age-old” process, but it’ll continue to be the backbone of our economy for centuries to come. Land is spoken of constantly in young and new farm circles – where are you farming, how did you access it, what was your strategy, … it is almost always the 3rd or 4th question after “How are you?” and “How’s the season going?” Some would wax on about vertical farming, aquaponics, and lab grown food. Fair, however these formats are not what the majority of young and new farmers are interested in. Land, soil and access to it, is at the heart of our experience – it is fraught, loaded and deeply rooted at the intersection of class, race, settler – first nation relationships and capitalism (this list is not exhaustive.) In short, land is still that important. In this first episode of the series, hosts Stuart Oke, Aliyah Fraser and Maddie Marmor break down some of the personal reasons to focus on Land Access. It will introduce the struggle to lens equity into the series from the context of four farmers (can’t forget the amazing Kate Garvie – producer/editor extraordinaire!) who are young, currently and previously ‘landless’, first generation, lower class, white and black, who want to farm while decolonizing within a colonial system. Balancing the inclusion of land ownership in the land access conversation while not promoting it as a solution was a tension throughout the season. This is a comprehensive summary of the challenges facing BC’s tree fruit sector but there’s one thing it overlooks: the global competition it points to is from grower co-ops in other parts of the world. Zespri is a New Zealand grower co-op. Italian tree fruit co-ops worked with Zespri to help their growers diversify and cover the half of the year when Southern-Hemisphere kiwis were out of season. Re-posting a Flokk update to my personal feed. Sustainable practice certification will become standard practice for all cow/calf ranchers. Both domestic retailers, and export customers, will require it. And this is just the first step. With a tool set in place that is digital from the animals side, and already integrated into every day operation, Flokk will be uniquely positioned to make monetization of enteric methane reduction feed additives viable for cow/calf.

Through the Quebec Fisheries Fund, we’re investing in 3 projects in the Gaspé Peninsula with the Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ). Most of this funding will allow fish harvesters to acquire innovative equipment and adapt their vessels for the redfish fishery.
