“The stores require a maniacal focus on the customer experience" Fewer people are going to Starbucks every day. Their F24Q2 results caught the financial world off guard. Same-store sales decreased by 4%, driven by a 3% decline in traffic. The quote at the top of this post is from Howard Schultz, their former CEO. I agree with him, their store experience these days is a mess. For the entire back half of my career, I had a dual role. On one side I was running daily operations. On the other, I was responsible for process improvement and continuous improvement. Poor execution will destroy a product, while stellar execution will elevate a mediocre one. But don't take my word for it. Take Steve's (Jobs) "Ideas are worth nothing unless executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions." What I appreciate is how Starbucks is looking to address these issues. They aren't looking for some magical piece of tech to solve their problems. They know that a digital quick fix is nothing by snake oil. This is their plan 1) Review and revamp the process. Mobile orders have destroyed their ability to manage cafes during peaks 2) Implement their Siren Craft System. An internally developed targeting operational improvements and enhancing the efficiency and throughput of Starbucks stores 3) Improve customer experience with a deeper focus on product availability and adjustments to the mobile app (they are working to improve the estimated wait times of orders) 4) Continued product innovation, while respecting the needs of the core coffee business. Out of all of the things they are doing, this one is my favourite: Strategies to reach occasional and non-Starbucks Rewards customers, including exclusive in-app offers and making Mobile Order & Pay available more broadly. I like this because it's going after something that isn't easy. Finding that "moveable middle" is HUGE opportunity to increase customer lifetime value AND potentially create more raving fans (something that once served them exceptionally well). If You Ship Your Orders With A Carrier Using Dimensional Weight, Are You Sure Your Packaging Isn't Killing You? Every inch matters 🙄 One of the easiest ways you can improve your costs is by using the smallest container (box or poly bag) that adequately compliments your product. It's easy to lose sight of your packaging. You have your marketing, your sales, your strategic planning, and product development that consume the majority of your time. Operations at that point often falls to a "get it done" mode of thinking. But nothing has a faster ROI than stopping an over-spend. The chart below shows you the break point between a parcel's volumetric weight (dimensional weight) and the actual weight. Across the top you have the volume (in cubic inches) of the most popular eCommerce shipping containers. Down the left, varying levels of weight (your final product, packaged and ready to ship). Yellow is where you will pay based on the dimensional weight. Green is where you will pay based on the actual weight. For reference, the cross section you see... That's a standard men's shoe box captured at 5 pounds. Why did I pick 5 pounds? Because 84% of eCommerce volume registers at 5 pounds or less. By the numbers, there's a really high probability your shipping spend is dominated by dimensional weight. This is why one of the first things I do when working with a new client is review all of their shipment history. Being able to determine what you have been shipping in, how many times you have done it and to what geographies can be an immediately improve your results. Simple math can save millions. These Days, You'll Only Continue To Be A Great Marketplace If You Can Keep A Buyer's Trust One area where I think Shopify misses the boat is by not being enough of an endorser brand. Having a great tech marketplace and ecosystem is important. But what's more important is to feel that they can buy with confidence. Alibaba officially launched their "Alibaba Guaranteed" program today. The TLDR on the program: "Buyers will be able to source with added confidence as the service offers products at fixed prices with shipping fees included, promises dispatch of goods within 72 hours, and guarantees delivery by the expected date" Alibaba also takes care of fulfillment, giving buyers additional security and protection. They also are taking on additional financing. Independent merchants are growing exponentially. But with that, so is consumer UNcertainty. By making it easier for SMEs to buy with more confidence, Alibaba is making themselves a preferred destination for businesses looking to connect with suppliers. How much more confident are you when you see a similar item sold by Amazon and not a reseller? Or you know that it's Best Buy or Walmart that you are buying from? When big retailers themselves can't stock, track, forecast and sell the millions of products available these days, the next best thing is a strong position as an endorser or guarantor.
