Lent is a time of strict abstinence, with meat forbidden and meals reduced to the bare essentials—often just potatoes, without butter or milk. Pancakes became a practical and symbolic way to prepare for the season of sacrifice. While modern Ireland may no longer observe Lent with the same strictness, the tradition of flipping pancakes on Shrove Tuesday remains strong. Families across the country still gather to make and share pancakes, keeping alive a custom that has been passed down through generations.
