Alberta Immigration and Multiculturalism has released its second annual report, highlighting actions taken over the past year to combat racism, celebrate diversity and advance the implementation of recommendations outlined in Alberta’s Anti-Racism Action Plan. Launched in 2022, the plan included 28 recommendations to be implemented over three-years. To date, 27 of those 28 recommendations have been completed. Achievements outlined in the report include creating Alberta’s first Black Advisory Council to support the ongoing work of the Alberta Anti-Racism Advisory Council and the Premier’s Council on Multiculturalism. These councils engage with communities on an ongoing basis to garner feedback and insight that inform efforts on anti-racism and cultural collaboration. Work continues across government ministries to address discrimination through many actions and initiatives to foster a more welcoming province. This Human Trafficking Awareness Day we are reaffirming our commitment to combatting this unthinkable crime. We are awarding $5.5M in grants to 19 organizations working to prevent human trafficking, and to protect and empower victims. These grants focus on three areas: • prevention • protection • empowerment Collaboration and community partnerships are vital to combatting human trafficking. These grants strengthen the capacity of organizations to work with law enforcement, non-profits and Indigenous communities to deliver critical supports where they are needed most. These grants provide resources to empower survivors with the tools and services they need to recover and thrive. By investing in prevention, we are addressing the root causes of trafficking and reducing exploitation in our communities. Funded projects aim to prevent human trafficking by increasing public awareness of its signs and risk factors, supporting community engagement, and fostering collaboration. To meet fast-rising student enrolment, we’re building schools now by committing $8.6 billion for school construction and accelerating the school construction process. Alberta’s population is growing as more people choose Alberta as the place to call home and raise their families. This population growth is causing student enrolments in kindergarten to grade 12 schools to increase at historic rates. Thanks to this accelerated school construction process, 11 previously announced new school projects in Airdrie, Calgary, Chestermere, Edmonton, and Okotoks are being accelerated from the design phase to the construction phase.
