The Fairmont Royal York, an iconic Toronto landmark, has unveiled a newly reimagined fitness centre designed by DIALOG. Located at 100 Front St. W, this space transforms traditional gym experiences into a luxurious sanctuary for physical and mental wellbeing. Led by DIALOG design partner, Alison McNeil, the centre features thoughtful material choices and unique layout, creating a serene atmosphere that enhances guest experiences. Private rooms with premium equipment allow guests to integrate their personal fitness routines into this refined environment. This transformation not only elevates wellness but also redefines the role of fitness in luxury hospitality. 'We are going to do this together—Reflections on a bio-regional design research trip' is a piece authored by DIALOG associate and architect Ryan McClanaghan, published in Canadian Architect magazine. Ryan is the latest recipient of DIALOG's Iris Prize, an internal research and travel grant awarded annually to explore innovative design ideas that improve the wellbeing of communities. Ryan reflects on his research trip and discusses the bio-regional design framework – an approach in which the process of construction becomes as important as the design itself with novel techniques, and often new materials being created. By integrating local materials and processes, architects can create buildings that are both environmentally responsible and deeply connected to their surroundings. In honour of Tom Sutherland, every year we host a design residency with students from multiple faculties (architecture, engineering, public health, landscape architecture, urban planning, art…). We fly them from their different home universities to colabore on a design challenge. This year they explored the idea of “play” in Kensington Market in Toronto. They knocked it out of the park!
