Originally from the UK, Benjamin moved to Canada in 2004 and has dedicated much of his career to helping businesses leverage technology for better outcomes—particularly in the energy sector. We had a lovely time in Edmonton last night, joining #YEG Charter Members in welcoming 2025 with a private, 7-course dinner at Bernadette's! It's always a highlight when these stellar folks get together: A100 Board Chair Dave Bellous, Executive Director Tamara Woolgar, Kristina Milke, Aaryn Flynn, Christopher Micetich, Tim Carwell, Tom Ogaranko, John Pinsent, and our newest Edmonton Charter Member, Paul Bellows! As 2024 comes to a close (and before we welcome 8 new Charter and Associate Members in January!), we'd like to take a moment to celebrate the incredible journey we've shared as members of the A100 Community this year. Together, we've demonstrated the power of collaboration, innovation, and community building, with events and milestones that brought our purpose to life: fostering connections between founders, leaders, and investors to support and grow our innovation ecosystems. The year began with excitement as Charter Members gathered for a dinner at Shawn Abbott's hangar, setting a high standard for networking and camaraderie. Shortly after, our private dinner with Sam Pillar, CEO of Jobber, provided an invaluable opportunity to learn from one of Alberta’s most successful tech leaders. February's Member Mixer and the spring A100 AGM further strengthened our bonds, while our Lunch + Learn series delivered outstanding insights. Highlights included A100 Members Jenn Hunter of PayShepherd and Sam Jenkins, ICD.D of Punchcard Systems sharing how they earned recognition as Forbes’ Best Startup Employers; and a few months later, A100 Member Brian Heath inspired us with his story of Drivewyze and its recent exit. We celebrated innovation with an A100 Member Company Showcase, and shared lived experience and guidance during the AccelerateAB Roundtable Advising sessions. Family and fun were also part of the equation: our May the Fourth (Be With You) Family Event brought a touch of whimsy, while the TechSwing Golf Tournament and the Member Social: Aperitivo Hour kept spirits high. We delved into deeper discussions with the A100 + CommAlert Special Event, "Journey to Indigenous Reciprocity" with A100 Member Tim Carwell, and our keynote Lunch + Learn featuring Dr. Chitra Anand—who challenged us to think boldly about innovation—received national media attention. Finally, we celebrated excellence at the 2024 Start Alberta Tech Awards, an evening to honour the trailblazers shaping our ecosystems, and we wrapped up the year on a festive note with our Holiday Lunch, a perfect capstone to a year of growth and connection. As we step into the new year, the A100 remains committed to empowering Western Canada’s innovation entrepreneurs and leaders. Let’s carry forward our momentum, embracing new opportunities and challenges with the same spirit of collaboration and innovation that defines our extraordinary community.
