Description of problem: Upon logging in with a Pantheon session on fedora 33, the screen stays black, and the session cannot be interacted with at all. No desktop components start or render, including dock (plank) and menubar (wingpanel). The only way to "rescue" the system is by going to a TTY (e.g. by using Ctrl-Alt-F4) and either logging in and killing the session, or rebooting with Ctrl-Alt-Del and choosing a different session next time. I was unable to debug the cause if this issue so far, but logs seem to point to either problems with the dbus user session, API usage incompatibilities with mutter 3.38, or problems with the "builtin" session management in gnome-session (GNOME has switched to systemd based session management). Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): gala-3.3.2-4.fc33 pantheon-session-settings-33.1-1.fc33 How reproducible: 100% when starting a Pantheon session from the DM on fedora 33. Steps to Reproduce: 1. select "Pantheon" session and log in Actual results: Session does not load / start correctly and the machine cannot be interacted with other than switching to a different TTY. Expected results: Session starts successfully, like on fedora 32. Additional info: Upstream Pull Request with work-in-progress port to mutter 3.38: https://github.com/elementary/gala/pull/854 The downstream patches for gala on fedora 33 and rawhide are based on this PR.
