1941%20Elephant%20Pix, a photo by bucklesw1 on Flickr.

This photo ran in the January 1942 issue of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC in an article telling about the military buildup taking place in San Diego in anticipation of our becoming involved in World War II. (By the time the article appeared, Pearl Harbor had already been attacked and the U.S. had been at war for not quite a month.) The young sailors appearing in this photo would now be in their late 80s or early 90s. The elephant is unidentified but could either be Queenie or Empress. In late August 1941, the Zoo took delivery of three small elephants from India: Lucki, Little Maya and Hari-Ki-Lash, which had been ordered in 1940. By that time, war clouds were already gathering in the Pacific, and their voyage from Calcutta to the U.S. as part of an animal shipment was fraught with uncertainty and secrecy.
