Equatorial Energia SA's Acquisition of 15% Stake in Sabesp Marks Brazil's Largest Privatization Deal in Years Equatorial Energia SA is set to acquire a 15% stake in Sabesp, Latin America's largest water utility, for 67 reais per share, resulting in a transaction valued at nearly 7 billion reais for Sao Paulo. This landmark privatization, facilitated by Brazil's leading financial institutions, represents a substantial equity offering driven by fervent investor interest. The governor, Tarcisio de Freitas, a prominent right-wing figure, advocates for this privatization endeavor, signaling a departure from leftist ideologies and potentially establishing a precedent for forthcoming public utility divestitures. Equatorial Energia, a significant player in the energy sector, ventured into the sanitation industry just two years ago with the objective of enhancing Sabesp's administration and governance. The company aims to engage in renegotiations with suppliers and restructure its corporate workforce to streamline expenses. This acquisition aligns with Equatorial's strategic efforts to bolster its influence in the sanitation domain and expand its geographical footprint in the southeastern region. Notably, Equatorial is offering 67 reais per share for the 15% stake, which is 22% below the market value. Additionally, the state plans to vend an additional 17% stake, yielding an extra 9 billion reais. Despite the absence of competitive bids, the demand for shares surpasses the available supply, underscoring robust investor enthusiasm. # Thank you Luisa Santos for your submission!

🇧🇷 #Brazil⚡️: Power outages prompt surge in demand for generators, battery systems, Valor Econômico S/A reports. Brazil is seeing a surge in demand for generators and battery systems due to frequent blackouts, as companies aim to avoid production disruptions and reduce grid reliance. This trend is reminiscent of past crises, like the 2021 water shortage, which led to energy rationing. Industries, including construction, agribusiness, and healthcare, are seeking solutions to manage rising energy costs and ensure reliability. Micropower Group, a joint venture between Siemens, Comerc Energia, and Equinor, reports a sharp increase in demand, especially from the industrial sector. Their "energy as a service" model, allowing clients to access backup power without purchasing infrastructure, is becoming more popular. Battery systems have also become more affordable, with costs dropping 16% annually since 2013. As Brazil enters its “Summer Operation,” which prepares the grid for higher energy demand, the need for backup power continues to rise. Cities like São Paulo are using generators in public buildings to prevent operational disruptions. Full article 👇

NE Pulse: Business & Culture in NE Brazil Topics: Renewables/Infrastructure/Tourism State: Pernambuco (Capital city: Recife) Hey, community! Ever wondered how an island paradise can become a leader in sustainability?🌍 Neoenergia just got the green light from Brazil’s federal government to kick off a massive BRL 300 million #decarbonization project in the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago. The Noronha Verde project aims to reach up to 85% decarbonization across the #archipelago, which currently relies heavily on #diesel. If successful, Noronha will become the first inhabited island in Latin America to hit this milestone—a huge step for clean energy in the region! 💚🌞 And there’s more—a new airport is in the works. Managed by Dix Aeroportos under a 25-year concession, the airport is set to triple in size to improve travel services. This expansion is backed by Agemar Transportes e Empreendimentos, a leading infrastructure and logistics company in #Northeast #Brazil that provides an integrated platform of solutions for various economic sectors. While the new airport aims to enhance service quality, it raises #environmental concerns, as the island operates near its visitor cap of 132,000 annually—a limit set by a management agreement between state and federal governments. Dix Aeroportos has assured that the expansion will respect the established visitor limits within the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Management Plan. A bit about Neoenergia They’re part of the Iberdrola group and have been a big name in Brazil’s energy sector since 1997. They’re active across 18 states, reaching over 37 million people. With hydro, wind, and solar facilities generating 3.8 GW and over 8,000 km of transmission lines, Neoenergia is pushing Brazil toward a cleaner energy future. ⚡ This public-private push is exactly what we need if we’re serious about our climate goals. EDP
EDP’s first quarter results just released today show a recurring net profit rise of 20% YoY to €368 million, mainly due to the positive impact of our robust regulated networks segment, the normalisation of wind resources and the buyout of the minority shares of EDP Brasil completed in August. EBITDA reached €1.342 million, mainly due to the electricity Networks in Portugal, Spain and Brazil. At the end of the trimester, renewable generation now accounts for 97% of EDP’s total electricity generation, resulting in a strong reduction in CO2 emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 74%. This brings the Group ever closer to one of its main strategic targets: to become all green by 2030, a tangible reflection of the 97% gross investment in renewable energy projects and electricity networks. As EDP continues its journey towards the energy transition, we encourage you to join us tomorrow, May 10th, at 8:30 AM (GMT), for the webcast presentation of EDP's first quarter results and business plan update at https://bit.ly/4afWB7s.

In my recent column for Editora Brasil Energia I talk about the enhanced and additional responsibilities for the - already busy - regulatory agencies, fostered by recent legislation aimed to deliver key aspects of the #energy transition in Brazil (low carbon hydrogen, fuels of the future, gas in energy transition). It will be crucial to empower the agencies with human, financial and digital resources to accomplish a successful energy transition. https://lnkd.in/e4e6H6xx #transicaoenergetica #hydrogen #saf #biomethane #naturalgas #brasil #ANP #ANAC #EPE

Today we celebrate two years of #5G in Brazil, with the ambitious goal of bringing this technology to the entire country by 2030. But what does this mean for #agribusiness, one of the pillars of our economy? The answer is simple: huge opportunities. With 5G, #precisionag gains strength. Imagine sensors spread across the fields, monitoring soil, climate, and plants in real-time. This allows for more efficient use of inputs, saving resources and protecting the environment. The innovations don't stop there. #Drones and #autonomous machines will revolutionize work in the fields. The high speed and low latency of 5G enable more coordinated and efficient operations, increasing #productivity and reducing the need for human intervention. Additionally, enhanced #connectivity facilitates tracking products from farm to table, meeting the demands of markets and consumers who want to know the origin of their food. And there's more: 5G helps collect environmental data on a large scale, promoting more #sustainable agricultural practices. Of course, there are challenges ahead. For all this to become a reality, we need robust infrastructure and significant investments, especially in rural areas. Training our #farmers and ensuring data security will be essential for the success of this transformation. But the vision for the future is clear: in the coming years, 5G promises to transform Brazilian agribusiness, making it more efficient, sustainable, and globally competitive. Let's overcome the challenges together and seize the opportunities of this new digital era in agriculture! #Agribusiness #Technology #5G #Innovation #Sustainability #DigitalFuture

It's All About the Bottom Line! Today, at a workshop discussing the #climatestrategy of a major blue-chip company, this enduring mantra of "shareholder value" was cited. While I acknowledge that profitability is essential for any private company's sustainability, there is undoubtedly a broader picture to consider. Consumers and societies are not primarily concerned with a company’s financial results. They demand products and services that meet their needs, foster a healthy environment, and an economy that provides opportunities for growth and prosperity for individuals, families, and nations. In essence, they yearn for an economy that creates societal value while sustaining environmental integrity. During my presentation at the G20 Brasil 2024 #SAI2020 closing ceremony, I contended that the quest for profit and the need for sustainable development for current and future generations have historically been at odds, though they do not need to be. It is the responsibility of our governments to design and implement policies that create a competitive landscape and steer profit-seeking private investors to competitively produce goods and services that meet societal needs today and in the future, all while respecting the environmental limits of our planet. My discussion highlighted the critical role of Supreme Audit Institutions in shaping, overseeing, and evolving these policies. However, this topic is of general relevance not only to policymakers and stakeholders but also to us as individuals and voters. Below, you will find a summary prepared by the E+ Energy Transition Institute. Here you find my full presentation from the event: https://lnkd.in/ezcJSeWD I would like to thank the Tribunal de Contas da União for the opportunity its work with the INTOSAI DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE (IDI).

Corruption in Brazil is simply endless. The psychopaths who poison rivers and soil; who poison indigenous children and farm workers; who use and are accustomed to slave labor continue to shout to the corrupt press and to the world that ethanol is a green fuel. Until when? It's not just RenovaBio . The situation with natural gas in Brazil is heading in the same direction. Abuse of economic power, collusion, abuse of power. Just look at what the scoundrel prosecutor Marcus Marcelus Gonzaga Goulart is trying to do to me. Raízen , part of Cosan and sister company of Comgás, has more than 40 thousand lawsuits pending in the courts and has already been convicted of poisoning indigenous children, slave labor, and polluting soil, water bodies, and air. Not to mention the most shameful #greenwashing scandal on the planet, #renovabio and its false carbon credits #cbio; crimes of #ideologicalfalsity, #marketreserve, and #fraud. Renovabio is the result of the disgusting criminal association of the sugar and alcohol sector, #mme, #anp, #sgs, Bureau Veritas Group , Bradesco , Santander , Universidade Estadual de Campinas , Embrapa , B3 , and Fundação Getulio Vargas . Obviously, with the unconditional support of corrupt politicians who make up the sector's bench in the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate. São Paulo, Brazil has faced several water crises in recent years, including severe droughts in 2014 and 2021. Brazilian water and sewage company Sabesp provides services across 375 municipalities in São Paulo. Faced with the daunting challenge of managing water and waste amidst growing demands and environmental concerns, Sabesp launched a project to merge water supply, sewage, and sanitation data into one digital space. Named Integra 4.0, this initiative combines business intelligence with AI to keep an eye on the network to help identify and fix problems quickly. The team used integrated hydraulic modeling and water analysis software. Using Bentley software, Sabesp could model hydraulic projects, spot leaks, and cut down on waste. This led to better management of water resources and smarter maintenance of the network, reducing water losses by 29%. This 2024 Going Digital Award winner was recognized for demonstrating a sophisticated integration of data analytics to streamline water management, setting a benchmark for digital innovation in water services.
