Avoid IHostedService before .NET 8 if you can, because it has a problem... 👇 In .NET versions before 8, the 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐀𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐜 methods of 𝐈𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 implementations were called one after the other during application startup. Each StartAsync method had to be finished before the next one could begin, which could delay the startup if any service took a long time to initialize. Imagine you have a task that executes for a couple of minutes. This means the application would not start until that task is finished. .NET 8 introduces a solution with the 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 property in the HostOptions class. With services now starting concurrently, the host’s startup time is minimized to the duration of the slowest service's StartAsync method, rather than being the combined time of all services. Note: Each service begins only after the previous one releases control by reaching its first await statement in the StartAsync method. To allow the next service to start as quickly as possible, ensure that StartAsync is truly asynchronous and avoid any costly operations before the first await. Like the post? In addition to data in our program, we often need outside resources. Sometimes, these resources are provided by the end-user, but there are also situations where we have all the resources at the time of development. We need an option to ship them with our program somehow. Rather than merely attaching files to our program, it’s advantageous to include them within its assembly. This ensures they’re always readily available and eliminates the risk of overlooking them. The encapsulation of resources within the program itself constitutes embedded resources. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 .𝐍𝐄𝐓 8? 🚀 As an early adopter, I have already updated all my projects to .NET 9; this was not difficult so far, as I have always tested the release candidates for my libraries, websites and projects anyway. After the release of .NET 9 yesterday, I have now also updated https://myCSharp.de on production - but what difference does it make, do you notice it? 👀 𝓨𝓮𝓼! 𝐂𝐏𝐔 𝐔𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 🧮 Since we know .NET and C# very well, we code very well :-), sustainable and very optimized. The CPU has therefore never been a problem for us. Even with bot attacks. However, you can see that CPU usage is much smoother! 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐨𝐥 🛀 Each request is processed by one thread - and here, too, you can see a very optimized, improved behavior of the thread pool. Fewer are required and they are available more quickly. This makes the application more performant and efficient. 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 📝 The biggest improvement is the Memory behavior. We keep a lot stuff in-memory in order to be able to process requests in an optimized way. Without having changed the code, the allocation rate is much lower, the Gen 0 behavior is gigantically better and over all we need 20% less memory to run the platform. ✅ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 .NET 9 is another huge update - the best .NET we've ever had (it would be silly if it wasn't 😊) I 💚 .NET #dotnet #aspnetcore #dotnet9 #mvpbuzz #mycsharp

Did you know that Struct in .NET isn't just a smaller version of a class? Structs are value types, meaning they offer memory efficiency and avoid heap allocation compared to reference types like classes. They're perfect for small, immutable data structures like coordinates, colors, or other simple objects where performance matters. However, structs come with their own set of rules and best practices. For instance, they should be kept small and preferably immutable to avoid unexpected behavior when passed around.
