The race has only just started, and Europe has some major assets (European LLMs, European data) that we can still leverage to become globally competitive in AI.

Since 2016, I've been on an incredible journey, weaving Regenerative Design and Development (RDD) into my sustainable low carbon built environment research starting with Bill Reed. My dedication to this transformative approach led me to become a Regenerative Practitioner with the Regenesis Institute with Pamela Mang, Joel Glanzberg, Alana Marsh, Drika & Laura Hunt last year—a life changing experience and true honor and privilege. Thereafter, I’ve continued exploring Daniel Christian Wahl’s work on Regenerative Cultures and literally all public work by Carol Sanford on Regenerative Business, Life, Indirect Work, etc. The recent spotlight on Regenerative Design and Development (RDD) presents a unique opportunity for us to delve into its rich history and evolution since the 1990s. While the term "regenerative" has gained popularity in recent years, its roots evolved from ancient Socratic philosophies, prehistoric indigenous knowledge, and communal practices. As we embrace Regenerative Design and Development (RDD) in the modern era, it rightfully takes center stage as a powerful tool for humanity. This collective opportunity urges us to become responsible stewards of our planet and recognize our interconnectedness with Earth's living systems. By embracing RDD, we can avoid self-destruction and pave the way for a thriving, sustainable future for all. “🇧🇪 As part of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, a high level event on Regenerative Development and Design (RDD) took place in April 2024. 🍃 RDD is a discipline to elevate governance, innovation and planetary health. Based on a holistic worldview, including humans and economies as an intrinsic part of nature. It integrates aspects of ancient Indigenous knowledge and Eastern philosophical and spiritual wisdom traditions with the latest insights from modern Western science. 🇪🇺 The study explores the concept of Regenerative Development and Design and analyzes the value added it can bring to current approaches of sustainability and EU environmental legislations.” The groundswell of interest in RDD is undeniable, yet this path requires introspection and dedication as we challenge our own beliefs and actions to shape a better world. I'm committed to this collective journey, supporting and collaborating with others who share a passion for embracing uncomfortable growth and intentional provocation to co-create a better future. I encourage everyone interested or just curious about regenerative practice to join me in exploring the rich history and development of RDD, and together, let's make the changes we desperately need at home, work, in our communities, businesses, economic systems and local environments. 🌍 Belgium is Making Waves in Green Tech! 🌱 This week in Brussels, the first-ever GreenTech Forum Brussels was organized. The number of participants clearly showed the high demand and eagerness for discussions on this critical subject.! 🌐 The urgency to address climate change is no discussion. Did you know the ICT sector is responsible for about 4% of global CO2 emissions, on par with the aviation industry? Now more than ever, it's crucial to adopt sustainable IT practices and embrace green coding. The digital sector has a unique dual role: reducing its own environmental footprint while driving the ecological transition across other industries. #PainSurLaPlanche 🌟 The forum was an eye- and brain opener and I have been inspired by all the conversation I have had!  Over two days, we delved into the complexities and varied solutions of this pressing issue. From inspiring talks to the latest innovations, industry leaders, research experts, and pioneers shared their insights. It was also an excellent opportunity to network with companies, startups, and field experts. Collaboration is the key to a greener future, and it really felt we were advancing together. 🇫🇷🇳🇱 It was fantastic to see strong representation from French and Dutch tech communities, underscoring the power of cross-border collaboration for the greater good. 🙏 Thank you to the Belgian Institute for Sustainable IT asbl/vzw - for an excellent first event! What's feasible? A quick morning reflexion. There are many discussions about the feasibility of energy transition scenarios in terms of how fast can the system be transformed or how fast certain technologies can be scaled. This is a fundamental discussion since this has implications on the level of warming we will have to face (https://lnkd.in/eTXPSw9P.). One can take the problem from two sides: - look at historical precedents and analyse the context to get an idea of what could be done for some technologies in the future. This is helpful evaluate how ambitious some scenarios might be (https://lnkd.in/eCG_ANsT). - assume that the current context is different (we face an existential crisis) and we know how to scale something very fast once a technology is mature (https://lnkd.in/eM4wiM-W). Indeed, solar and wind are currently deploying faster than any energy technologies. Basically this approach is about saying that it is not because something has never been done that it cannot be done Both approaches are valuable and probably complimentary. The former can lead to too much pessimism and refrain ambition. But it provides a useful reality check. The latter ignores the bottlenecks that a very fast deployment needs to overcome but inspires us to be bold and try hard. I couldn't agree more with this article by Jolyce Demely, Ann Wurman, Karla Basselier, Nadia Lapage and Hans Maertens. 1. Industry is core Without a thriving industrial sector, Flanders is toast. It's the engine of our economy, there is so much depending on it & downstream from these activities. 2. Companies need to wake up There are so many beautiful - but sleepy - large Belgian manufacturing companies. We talk to many of them, and believe me, if HQ is non-Belgian, it often goes a lot faster. 3. Politicians need to wake up Making regulations stricter than Europe’s just to look good is killing our businesses. Less regulation, pragmatic approaches. ⚡ Advancing Grid Resilience: Outcomes of the Flex4Scale Initiative The #Flex4Scale project, funded by the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) Accelerator programme, has been decisive in scaling up our platform. This initiative has future-proofed our technology and significantly advanced our mission to support a decarbonised, secure electricity system across Europe. Before launching, we tested the new features with three dedicated customers, Kotipellon Puutarha, Härkälän Puutarha and Constellation Cold Logistics Sweden AB, ensuring a seamless transition. Each of them played a crucial role in balancing the grid, demonstrating the robustness and responsiveness of our upgraded platform. Yesterday I had the opportunity to explore Living Tomorrow, a visionary company located in Vilvorde, which explores how technology and innovation can transform the way we live, work, and move. Alongside Joachim De Vos, founder of TomorrowLab and co-president of Living Tomorrow, and Elias Oumouadène, Technology and Innovation Manager, we discussed the role of foresight and technology in shaping the world of tomorrow. The presentation also offered a fascinating insight into the origins of Living Tomorrow, starting with the innovative concept of the House of the Future. These reflections led to enriching discussions on the need to support a decarbonized transition while remaining economically competitive and socially just. The political world can play a key role in supporting the ethical and strategic adoption of innovative technologies, in order to maximize their positive impact on society! Finally, the immersive experience "The world in 2030 and beyond" deeply inspired me. Living Tomorrow shows that dreams and visions for the future can translate into concrete actions. 🟣 What an inspiring day at the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) Tech2Market pitching event! I had the privilege of serving on the jury committee alongside esteemed professionals with backgrounds in strategy, investment, deep tech development, and the EIC Accelerator program itself. 💥 The four deep tech startups that pitched were truly remarkable. Their technologies, born from rigorous academic research and years of dedication, showcased immense potential across five distinct business applications. For some of these teams, this was their first foray into the world of investor pitches, a notoriously challenging task for scientists accustomed to the intricacies of research. 🔵 Our jury discussions centered on guiding these brilliant minds in crafting compelling pitches: how to establish an ecosystem, credibility, maintain focus, and effectively communicate the immense business potential of their innovations. What resonates with investors in the deep tech space? It was a fascinating exchange of ideas, fueled by the diverse expertise within the jury room. ✅ A huge congratulations to each team who participated! By taking the brave step to pitch, you've already achieved a significant victory. Stad Mechelen selected for the new Thematic Partnership on Building Decarbonisation of the Urban Agenda for the EU! We applied to this Thematic Partnership, because there was so much resemblance with our heat strategy and heat coalition: 🏘️ It addresses decarbonisation of building through a strategic integrated approach, going beyond individual buildings and encouraging the district/neighbourhood approach. 🔵🔴 It focuses on both integrated Renovation Programmes and Local Heating & Cooling Plans. 🤝 The Thematic partnership is set-up as Multi-level and Multi-stakeholder collaboration. What is exactly how we envision our heat coalition. A total of 45 organisations applied for the Building Decarbonisation Partnership, including 19 cities. As Belgium assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from January to June, we have the privilege of engaging with numerous European policymakers who visit Port of Antwerp-Bruges during this period. It is with great pride that we showcase our achievements and advocate for a robust European framework that empowers us to fulfill our pioneering role. Today, we had the honor of hosting a delegation of ambassadors from the 27 Member States representing their respective nations to the European Union – COREPER 1. During their visit to the Antwerp port platform, our VP Corporate Affairs Guy Janssens and myself engaged in comprehensive discussions on the port's integral role in the energy transition, its position as a circular hotspot and an innovation platform. We highlighted that many of our ambitious projects in these domains have thrived due to the support of the European policy framework and EU funding. Recognising the ever-evolving nature of our challenges, we shared insights with the ambassadors regarding the imperative for European policymakers to refine the Union's actions and priorities in the upcoming legislative term. Simultaneously, on the Bruges' port platform, we held fruitful discussions with the Working Party on Maritime Issues, specifically focusing on the European Union Maritime Security Strategy (EUMSS). Our dedicated safety and security experts were eager to exchange expertise and explore best practices from other European countries. As safety and security lie at the very core of our operations, these discussions were of paramount importance. Looking ahead, we are excited about hosting several more European delegations in the coming weeks as part of the Belgian Presidency. These engagements provide invaluable opportunities for constructive exchanges with EU policymakers, nurturing collaborative relationships that will endure in the years to come. At Port of Antwerp-Bruges, we remain committed to leading the charge in innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.
