FFAR & NWO Launch Greenhouses in Transition & Welcome Proposals About Greenhouses in Transition Greenhouses in Transition, a program co-founded by the #Foundation for Food & Agriculture (FFAR) and the #Dutch Research Council (NWO), focuses on increased regional sustainability of the Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) sector by developing transdisciplinary, cross-sector innovations within the food-energy-water nexus. Transitioning CEA to become more environmentally sustainable requires effective resource allocation that considers the competition for land, water, nutrients and variable renewable energy resources across industries and society. Sectors within the Water-Food-Energy nexus, including CEA, are often socially and economically embedded in a region. Changes within these can impact regional systems as a whole. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 🔍 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀: The overexploitation of natural resources in global food systems drives biodiversity loss and climate change through ecosystem conversion, habitat degradation and fragmentation, soil nutrient depletion, overfishing, and excessive water extraction. 🔍 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: Current food systems face three major societal challenges: unequal access to safe and nutritious food, disproportionate power dynamics, and the effects of environmental degradation on the most vulnerable parts of society. 🔍 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺: Pollution from food systems damages water, air, and soil, harming ecosystems, biodiversity, and public health. 🇪🇺 How can the EU harness the full potential of agroforestry? AGROMIX has set out 5 core policy pathways in its white paper "Transforming European Food Systems with Agroforestry." These policies can help the EU lead the way towards a sustainable, resilient, and equitable food system that meets the needs of present and future generations. To maximise agroforestry uptake, the EU should: 1.  Formalise a consistent classification and criteria system for agroforestry across Europe. 2. Embed transformative agroforestry within a radically reformed CAP. 3. Ensure robust, long-term financial rewards for agroforestry implementation. 4. Firmly embed tree products and services from agroforestry systems in numerous value chains. 5. 🙌 The European Investment Bank (EIB) and WWF join forces to boost climate adaptation in Europe 🙌 This is fantastic news. With Europe facing increasingly intense floods and droughts, the EIB is teaming up with WWF to accelerate climate adaptation in Europe by mobilising early-stage funding for nature-based solutions (NbS) to help buffer societies and economies against the worsening impacts of the climate and biodiversity crises. And we aiming high.
