As the Energy Council approaches on 16 December, I want to share my thoughts on two critical questions that will shape the future of EU energy policy and the upcoming meeting. 1️⃣ Which initiatives should be prioritized in the next legislative cycle to most effectively advance the Energy Union’s objectives and deliver a secure, affordable, and sustainable energy future for all Europeans? The upcoming legislative cycle must place a strong emphasis on renewable energy solutions that balance sustainability, energy security, and affordability. Among these, renewable liquid gases should play a key role, offering versatile applications in heating, transportation, and other sectors, thereby contributing to a more resilient and lower-carbon energy system. To achieve this, we need: 👉A technology-neutral framework that values environmental performance, allowing renewable liquid gases to compete fairly alongside other clean energy solutions. 👉Support for scaling up production of renewable liquid gases to meet growing demand and provide reliable alternatives to fossil fuels. 👉Recognition of the unique energy challenges in rural areas, ensuring that these communities have access to practical and cost-effective renewable solutions. 2️⃣ What short- to long-term actions and measures could the EU Action Plan for Affordable Energy include in order to bring down energy costs? Affordability must be a cornerstone of the energy transition, particularly as the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS2) expands to heating and transport. In the short term: 👉 Targeted measures like tax incentives under the revised Energy Taxation Directive (ETD) can offset rising costs and encourage the adoption of renewable alternatives. 👉 Households and small businesses, especially in rural areas reliant on liquid gas, need direct financial support to ensure they are not left behind. In the long term: 👉 Scaling up the production and market access of renewable liquid gases, such as bioLPG and rDME, is essential. These renewable fuels can leverage existing liquid gas infrastructure, avoiding costly new investments and ensuring an efficient, affordable transition. Revenues from ETS2 should be recycled into clean energy innovation and social protection measures to stabilize energy costs and support decarbonization. Renewable liquid gases have a vital role to play in delivering an energy transition that is ambitious, fair, and affordable for all Europeans. Let’s work together to ensure no one is left behind as we build a sustainable and resilient energy future. What are your thoughts on these priorities? Negative power prices have been a huge topic in European power markets this year, as the number of negative price hours has surged in many markets. Our French power markets team has pulled together a public report on this available on link below. Key drivers of negative prices are: - Strong growth in renewables deployment - High renewables generation in some months (this was a strong driver in I Paris in Spring) - Inflexibilities in the system eg nuclear in France, coal in Poland and Germany - Low power demand, partly linked to weak industrial demand - France in particular ‘imports’ negative prices from neighbouring markets in periods of oversupply.

👍As you know, one of the core legislative instruments of the #EUElectricityMarketReform is the new Regulation 2024/1747 to improve the Union’s electricity market design (published in the Official Journal of the EU on 26th June🗓️).   ✅In this context, much has been commented about the pros & cons of this Regulation, but... you know what… 🎬the true #EUElectricityMarketReform #EMD will start next 🗓️16th July with the enter into force of this key legislative text and consequently with its #Implementation phase.   ✅The current electricity prices scenario in Europe has nothing to do with the one that triggered the political negotiation about the new electricity market design #EMD in late 2022 and 2023, and this better “energy atmosphere” is precisely what should facilitate the proper #Implementation of this Regulation with regard to both #Timing and #Impact.   ✅I leave you below a #timeline with some milestones that might help you follow up and navigate the implementation of the long-debated #LongTerm market instruments as key componentes of the #EUElectricityMarketReform   🤞Intense months and years are coming to implement many things … but motivating ones towards #MoreEurope #MoreMarkets and #MoreDecarbonization.

The Energy Sovereignty Index 2024 from the European Council on Foreign Relations offers a comprehensive assessment of European countries' #energysecurity by evaluating their performance across four key pillars: cleanness, #efficiency, #independence, and overall energy sovereignty. While #Europe has made significant progress in diversifying energy sources and increasing the share of renewable energy, challenges remain—particularly concerning energy imports and the need for further diversification. Italy has made notable strides in key areas, including energy efficiency, reduction in Russian gas dependence, increased renewable energy in its energy mix, and improved energy security measures.

Next and the last in this mandate- European Clean Hydrogen Alliance #ECH2A Round Table on Transmission and Distribution - Learnbook: on the Implementation of Hydrogen Supply Corridors. A massive and tacit piece of work with set of latest data on #hydrogen #infrastructure projects, constituting 6 #H2 corridors, as designed by #RepowerEU plan- all under delivery by emerging #hydrogen value chains in their regional, relevant geographies. Very interesting data, quantifications and recommendations, published today at @ECH2A webside by DG GROW of European Commission. Prove where we exactly are at the end of 2024 on: ➡️ FIDs, ➡️ project prospects ➡️ implementation status. We facilitated this work at ENTSOG. Some interesting findings from electricity markets analysts, just for fun 🤩: - revenues from energy sector decreased by 20% in Q1 2024 first half compared to 2023 due to lower electricity prices - the decline in revenues was partially offset by higher electricity sales (product is cheaper, it gets sold more) More interesting: - net profit margins are on the rise thanks to even greater drop in the costs of producing electricity from RES (IRENA recent report helps us there) - net profit margins increased of 3% thanks to higher volumes and better wind conditions But even more so: - high electricity prices do not automatically mean that utility companies can achieve higher profit margins… it is actually the opposite as represented in the graph 📈 When wholesale prices where at a low in 1H2024 the net profit margins went up to 12% (300bn) while when prices where at their highest, net profit margins in 2H22, the adjust net margins were at its lowest with 2% I guess a good question to asks to policymakers very very very soon 🔜 👁️ Who gets what here?
