I am looking forward to be part of the panel on #EUenlargement at the ArtCo Conference 2024 in Budapest next week, an event of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council. 🇭🇺 Good cross-border relations are an indispensable prerequisite for EU accession of candidate countries. Working together across borders is at the core of what Europe is all about. 🤝🇪🇺 Border regions have a crucial role to play not only in boosting mutual understanding, connectivity, competitivity, prosperity and solidarity in Europe. They are also key actors in European democracy. We need them to spearhead the development of European citizenship. 💪🇪🇺 In the EU enlargement countries border regions are also natural allies in fighting foreign information manipulation and interference ( #FIMI ), particularly in the Western Balkan region.🇪🇺🛡🇪🇺 This why strengthening cross-border cooperation between EU regions and candidate countries' border regions as well as cooperation between EU candidate countries' border regions is one of the best investments we can make in Europe's future. 🇪🇺🤝🇪🇺

#Finnishgovernment has sent letters to all EU´s #commissionerdesignates. Jozef Sikela got one too. There would have been space to highlight EU´s legal commitment and primary objective of EU #development policy, as laid down in Article 208 #TFEU, which is the reduction and, in the long term, eradication of poverty. It would have been nice to see other buzzwords (like #globalgateway) in the letter. Those words are #nexus #democracy #peace #inequality. And not only as words, but as a frame to guide all actions. We have released a joint statement between JEF Europe and JEF-Georgia condemning the decision by Georgian Dream to free the country's EU integration process and the violent crackdown on peaceful protesters. Key Points - The decision of Georgian Dream led by Irakli Kobakhidze to halt the process of EU accession until at least 2028 is a frontal attack on the European aspirations of the people of Georgia. - The passing of the so-called “foreign agents law”, which severely harms Georgian civil society action, and the fraudulent parliamentary election of October this year, prove the need for decisive action to restore full democratic freedoms in Georgia. - JEF Europe and JEF Georgia demand an end to violence against protestors and the liberation of those detained, a new parliamentary election in Georgia, and the continuation of Georgia’s EU accession process. Thirteen years after its first term and twenty years since joining the EU, Poland introduces an ambitious programme focused on implementing priorities centered around the topic of #security 🔸#COMPET Council will focus: on the areas related to reinforcing the foundations of the #SingleMarket and development of the EU #industrial policy that strengthens the #competitive position of European companies. When it comes to #research, the main leitmotif will be #openess & #synergy; application of #AI in science; mid-term evaluation of the #HorizonEurope. In the area of #Space it will focus on maximising the benefits of using #EarthObservation #spacedata and be ready to work on #SpaceLaw etc. 🔹#TTE Council will focus: on promoting the solutions for the development of EU #technologies to facilitate the transition and mechanisms that aim at maintaining European industry competitive. After the approval of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, the focus of the EU will be on implementation and a renewed (?) approach to cooperation with third countries. The European Commission will also have to strenghten trust among member states and in the public by managing expectations about the new system. Today, we have an additional tool at our disposal in the fight against online disinformation: the Digital Services Act (DSA). This is our new landmark regulation to restore trust and safety in the online space, addressing systemic risks such as disinformation, and protect the integrity of electoral processes. In light of #BelarusDays, I touched upon the EU relations with Belarus following the stolen elections in 2020 and the EU’s continued support to Belarusian political prisoners as well as independent media and civil society. Unfortunately, repression in Belarus is growing and the human rights situation is deteriorating. We must #StandWithBelarus and amplify the voices of those cruelly suppressed.
