#Mutual and #cooperative insurers across the globe are increasingly embedding #sustainability in their core #riskmanagement, #insurance and #investment strategies and operations. Accordingly, many mutual and cooperative insurers have committed to implement the United Nations Principles for Sustainable Insurance #PSI, the global sustainability framework for the insurance industry, and the largest collaborative initiative between the UN and the insurance industry. At the same time, #Europe has been leading in terms of legislation to advance sustainability in order to deliver positive economic, social and environmental impacts; encouraging innovative and transparent approaches while identifying and constructing standards to eliminate negative impacts such as greenwashing. This is why I’m looking forward to speaking at the 2024 Congress of the Association of Mutual Insurers & Insurance Cooperatives in Europe #AMICE, “The Art of Mutuality”, which will be held on 3-4 June 2024 in Bilbao, Spain. AMICE is the voice of the mutual and cooperative insurance sector in Europe, and the sector represents approximately one-third of all insurance business in Europe. I’ll be chairing the session, “Sustainability, Collaboration and Innovation: Unlocking Potential” involving Eeva Salmenpohja, Senior Vice President at #LocalTapiola Group (Finland), Jean-Pierre Grimaud, CEO of Ofi Invest (France), and Philipp Bäcker, Head of Sustainability at R+V Versicherung (Germany). Furthermore, I'll be delivering a plenary presentation on "The Role of Insurance in the Transition to a #NetZero Emissions Economy". Among others, I'll explain what the new United Nations-led and convened #multistakeholder “Forum for Insurance Transition to Net Zero” #FIT is all about and what its main aims and priorities are; and why #mutual and #cooperative insurers are key actors in supporting the net-zero transition. The 2024 #AMICECongress will be hosted by Seguros Lagun Aro, which is part of MONDRAGON Corporation, one of the most important cooperative groups in the world, operating in four sectors of activity: industry, distribution, knowledge and finance. Over the past two years, listed companies in Belgium have further levelled the playing field for women in the boardroom.  Prioritizing gender equality across board and other leadership positions is both the right and the smart thing to do. Right, because it’s about fairness and respect. Smart, because diversity results in a higher collective intelligence quotient and ultimately better business decisions. Cooperative insurer and ICMIF member, the P&V Group (Belgium), says it is remaining true to its mission of offering protection to as many people as possible, as it celebrates having reached a double threshold of insuring more than 1 million customers and of reaching EUR 2 billion in terms of premium income for the first time. These two successes were celebrated by the P&V Group last week as it published its financial results for 2023. The P&V Group says this reflects its constant growth, thanks to the reinvesting of its profits in the organisation (93% in 2023), in line with its cooperative model. ‘We are very pleased with the figures for 2023. For the fifth year running, our growth is stronger than that of the market. These results show that our cooperative model works. Since we can reinvest our profits in the development of our organisation, we’re working step by step to make it a reality. We are working step by step to achieve our mission, mainly by offering protection to as many people as possible. BNP Paribas Fortis is teaming up with researchers at Ghent University (UGent) on a project that will use data to make a positive impact on society. Joint non-profit Prometis lab will use aggregated and anonymised bank data to understand societal and economic trends. This process will prioritise intellectual property rights and data protection. This data will present a real-life snapshot that could help uncover macro and micro economic factors affecting how people save, spend and invest. Under the leadership of Dr Milan van den Heuvel, alongside the research group led by from the Department of Economics at UGent - Prometis Lab will investigate how aggregated and anonymised bank data can offer valuable economic insights for socio-economic policy. Prometis Lab will be open to researchers and institutes, both within and outside UGent. The aim of the research group is to expand the platform into an international knowledge centre. BNP Paribas Fortis and the UGent Economics Department are excited to put this research into action. ✈️ First Event, New Role and AI Insights at SIRM Forum This week, I had the pleasure of attending my first event in my new role at the SIRM - Swiss Association of Insurance and Risk Managers Forum in Bern. Joining me was my talented colleague, Ivana Korolija, an Insurance Specialist at SR Technics Group, based in Belgrade. It was fantastic to share this experience with her! What made the event even more special was reconnecting with so many familiar faces from the Swiss corporate insurance market—it truly felt like "coming home." 😊 The main theme this year was Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its growing influence on risk management. A few takeaways that stood out for me: 1️⃣ AI in Underwriting: AI tools are helping with initial analysis and providing first impressions on risks, but people remain key for quality decision-making. 2️⃣ AI Regulation: While Europe is leading with the AI Act to protect fundamental rights, global approaches are inconsistent, with many countries still observing. 3️⃣ The Future of Work: AI will not replace us, but it will change our roles. Creativity and asking the right questions will matter more than ever. 4️⃣ The Human Edge: Machines may excel at data, but empathy, intuition, and emotional intelligence remain uniquely human strengths. 5️⃣ Generative AI Challenges: AI can produce great content but struggles with outdated data, logical errors, and reliability. 6️⃣ New Tools for Loss Prevention: Advanced sensors are now being used to collect real-time data on risks like water leakages, battery storage issues, and environmental factors. These tools are not only improving risk management but are also helping prevent losses before they even happen. A heartfelt thank you to all the organisers and the Board of SIRM, and especially to Sabrina Hartusch and Jurrit H. from the Board, for their efforts in making this event such a success. The forum was a fantastic opportunity to connect, learn and exchange ideas. I am excited to continue these discussions with peers and passionate professionals across the insurance and broker network. 🚀 And here's the real magic: SIRM managed to make the first snow of the season arrive just in time for our Christmas party celebration in the evening. Just read a survey from Profacts on Belgians' views on the economy and their financial situation. What struck me was the contrast between the general population's pessimism and the optimism of young people. Key takeaways for me: • 7 out of 10 respondents have a negative perception of the Belgian economy • In contrast, more than half of 16- to 24-year-olds have a positive image of the economy • 55% expect energy costs to rise, 49% anticipate price increases for shopping, and 38% for telecom • 7 out of 10 Belgians have little or no savings Personally, I'm more optimistic about the short-term outlook. I believe inflation will decrease in the coming months, and gas prices will drop as new capacity comes online. However, we're entering a new economic era, with underlying forces that will drive inflation and interest rates higher in the long term. As we navigate this 'Fourth Turning', it's crucial to stay informed, adapt to changing circumstances, and seek expert advice when needed. What if the Insurance Industry Became a Catalyst for Sustainable Transformation? 🌍💡   Today, the insurance industry faces a major challenge: continue using premiums to cover damages 🔄 or adopt a more sustainable model by investing heavily in risk prevention. To truly become “regenerative” 🌱, as some like to define themselves, insurers need to adopt a proactive strategy that goes beyond simply reimbursing claims.   🌾 Agroecological Transition Instead of just compensating households or farmers for crop losses due to flooding 💧, why not invest in sustainable agricultural practices like agroforestry 🌳 and sustainable soil management? This would not only reduce the risk of floods but also help restore ecosystems, creating long-term value.   🚲 Sustainable Mobility Rather than paying for the costs of road accidents 🚗💥, insurers could promote safer and greener transportation. Investing in bike-friendly infrastructure 🚴, supporting carpooling 🚘, would not only decrease accident risks but also reduce air pollution 🌫, a key factor in respiratory diseases.   💪 Preventive Healthcare Instead of focusing solely on reimbursing expensive medical treatments 💰, why not invest in prevention? Insurers could, for instance, fund wellness programs 🧘, nutrition plans & healthy food 🍎, or physical activity initiatives 🏃‍♂️ for their customers. Promoting a healthy lifestyle would lower the incidence of chronic diseases such as diabetes or heart conditions ❤️, significantly cutting long-term costs.   For the insurance industry to become truly regenerative 🌿, it needs to shift its paradigm: transitioning from a reactive, claims-driven model 🔄 to a preventive one that anticipates, reduces, and transforms risks. This is how insurers can become true partners in building collective resilience 🤝.   However, to enable this transition, political involvement is crucial 🔗. Policymakers need to establish a level playing field by creating coherent regulatory frameworks and aligning economic incentives 💼 to support a more preventive and responsible insurance model. How can European Export Agencies support business in #Vietnam? On Monday the 30th of September, Atradius Dutch State Business, @Federal Export Credit Guarantees (Hermes Cover) and SERV Swiss Export Risk Insurance organised a joint event in Ho Chi Minh City. During a very insightful afternoon, the three #Export Credit Agencies (ECA’s) presented how they can support European companies exporting to Vietnam. But it was even more important to show how Vietnamese companies and projects can benefit from buying #Dutch, #German or #Swiss suppliers.
