European Partnership for Democracy (EPD)
Public Policy Offices
EPD is the leading European #democracy support network, bringing together 20 NGOs to advocate for democracy.
About us
The European Partnership for Democracy is an independent European non-profit organisation supporting democratic transformations outside the European Union. As a network of European civil and political society organisations working on democracy assistance, EPD advocates for a stronger presence of democracy support on the European Union's agenda and facilitates the exchange of knowledge and good practices in democratic transformations around the world. We do this through innovative methodologies based on the development of effective partnerships with organisations in third countries, and the facilitation of political and social dialogue. The EPD network is conceived as a community of practice, i.e. a group of organisations that work together because, by doing so, they can substantially improve the way they operate in the realm of democracy support and provide a comprehensive response to the needs of populations. This notion does not only apply to the EPD as a network and its institutional development, but also to all the actions and partnerships constructed under the EPD banner.

#Research 💡 The African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG) is a key instrument for democratic progress in Africa, but there’s more to do! 📄 🔎 Andrew Songa and Makda M. Tessema highlight the need for universal ratification, stronger state reporting, and greater civil society engagement. Read the full journal article ⬇️
In the latest volume of the African Human Rights Yearbook published by Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, is my co-authored article on strengthening Africa's democratic governance through improved reporting under the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance #ACDEG. Part of my inspiration came from the experiences of implementing the The Charter Project Africa and the ongoing AHEAD Africa project. The article emphasizes: The importance of achieving universal ratification for the #ACDEG; incentivizing States to comply with their reporting obligations; improving coordination among organs charged with the responsibility of monitoring compliance with #ACDEG principles; and most importantly, enhancing the involvement of civil society as part of increasing public ownership and engagement. As always, my gratitude goes out to the Centre's editorial team for providing the opportunity to contribute to topical debates on the state of human and peoples' rights on the continent. #Africa #Democracy #Governance #AfricanUnion

#Policy 💬 💡 Did you know that cities can also implement democratic innovation to accelerate climate action? EPD's Nets4Dem partners Eurocities are hosting a Climate Democray Lab in Grenoble 🇫🇷 🪴 Six cities will be invited to present their challenges and discuss together how to engage citizens in shaping and supporting mobility policy, foster community-action to reduce car dependency and embed climate priorities into daily life. Learn more ⬇️
How can cities implement democratic innovation to accelerate climate action? 📅 Registrations are open now for the Nets4Dem Climate Democracy Lab in #Grenoble! Cities are tackling urgent climate challenges, from energy poverty to flood resilience - but solutions require more than policies. They need democratic innovation to ensure these policies respond to citizens needs, concerns and aspirations. At the Climate Democracy Lab - hosted by Eurocities and Grenoble-Alpes Métropole - city officers will focus on real-world challenges to climate action and explore how participatory democracy can drive fair, effective and tailored solutions. Six cities from across Europe will be presenting their challenges – including The City of Reykjavik. Committed to carbon neutrality by 2030, Reykjavik faces a difficult challenge: shifting citizens’ thinking to community-driven climate action. With 70% of emissions coming from private cars, the city aims to inspire a cultural shift towards public and active transport. “We need to make a comprehensive and progressive plan where the public, politicians and administration work together,“ says Sigurlaug Anna Jóhannsdóttir, Democracy Advisor for the City of Reykjavík. “We hope to get fresh ideas at the democracy workshop, sharing our ideas and learning from the experiences of others.“ Through the Democracy Lab, Reykjavík and cities from across Europe will explore how to: ✅ Engage citizens in shaping and supporting sustainable mobility policies ✅ Foster community-driven action to reduce car dependency ✅ Embed climate priorities into daily life 🙋 What to expect: ✅ City-led approaches to climate democracy in action ✅ Hands-on workshops, peer learning & networking with urban climate pioneers 📅 25-27 March 2025 📍 Grenoble, France 🔗 REGISTER NOW: https://lnkd.in/eXmvDa6m
