Today marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a crucial reminder of the unique challenges faced by asylum seekers and migrants with disabilities. Some of them are: ⚫ Perilious Migration Journeys: People on the move including the ones with disabilities are forced to take dangerous journeys to reach safety. Many drown, get stuck at borders or are abducted by the EU-funded Tunisian and Libyan authorities. ⚫ Identification Issues: Disabilities are frequently under-identified or not recognized during asylum procedures. Even when recognised, often, they are not provided with the healthcare and assistance needed. ⚫Communication Barriers: During the asylum process, refugees with intellectual disabilities may have difficulties in preparing interviews and collecting the necessary information to demonstrate the credibility of their claims. Also, refugees with hearing or physical impairments may struggle to communicate due to the absence of a medium/mediator. ⚫Intersectional Discrimination: In addition to xenophobia and racism, migrants and asylum seekers with disabilities are also exposed to violence, exploitation and social exclusion. ✊ It's time to move beyond statements and take action. All member states must prioritize INCLUSIVE PROTECTION, ensuring safe routes, comprehensive disability identification, accessible communication channels, and targeted anti-discrimination measures. Let's commit to a future where migrants with disabilities are not just protected, but empowered to lead and thrive.

📚 The ✨First✨ #AIDA Country Report on #Ukraine is OUT ➡️This is the first AIDA country report on Ukraine and it was written by the Ukrainian organisation Right to Protection (R2P) ➡️In 2023, 130 people applied for international protection in Ukraine. 138 decisions were taken by the authorities at the preliminary stage of the asylum procedure, resulting in 115 referrals for further examination (83%) and 23 rejections. ➡️In February 2023, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted new legislation which, inter alia, limited the right to apply for asylum at the border. 👉Since the full-scale invasion by Russia, Ukrainian authorities have used the imposition of martial law and a strict application of the five-day registration time limit as justifications for not registering or processing applications, despite the fact that current legislation does not foresee restrictions to the right to seek asylum. ➡️Since 2022, beneficiaries of international protection (BIPs) who fled Ukraine have not been able to issue or extend their protection certificates or travel documents from abroad.
