Bangladesh's largest and fastest-growing retail chain Shwapno achieved record operating performance in FY24, including the highest ever sales, store-level profitability, and operating profits. This success is attributed to its consumer-centric approach and innovative expansion model, which has helped Shwapno establish over 500 stores across Bangladesh. However, a higher interest burden added to its cumulative losses. According to its audited financial statements, Shwapno surpassed its ten-year trend of a 21% compound annual growth rate, with revenue surging to Tk2,285 crore in FY24, one-fourth higher than the previous year. "Consumer centricity and continuous innovation helped us achieve 65% sales growth in the past two years, despite the inflationary pressures on our customers," said Sabbir Hasan Nasir, managing director of Shwapno. He attributed the success to year-round campaigns for steady footfall growth and an increasing number of stores. Nearly 500 Shwapno stores in 62 districts ensured the highest ever gross profit margin of 19.3% on average, compared to 17.6% during the pandemic. Additionally, by diluting costs over more sales, the company reduced operating expenses to a record low of 17.8% of revenue, down from 21% six years ago. "In continuous improvement, we achieved the highest ever operational performance in FY24," said Sabbir Hasan Nasir. Opinion on the FY24-25 Proposed National Budget for E-commerce We commend the emphasis on Smart Bangladesh in the proposed FY24-25 national budget. To achieve a Smart Bangladesh, we need smart economy and smart commerce. Transforming traditional businesses into e-commerce requires robust IT infrastructure. While it's promising to see a proposed 3-year tax exemption for the IT and software sector, extending it until 2031, as e-CAB and ICT organizations have advocated, would be more beneficial. The inclusion of e-learning and e-application in the tax exemption is a positive step for this sector’s growth. However, extending the tax exemption to critical components like website hosting and cloud services is crucial. E-CAB has strongly recommended the Business Identity Platform (DBID) to ensure transparency and accountability in digital commerce operations. Although DBID has been launched, the lack of a distinct regulatory body for the digital commerce sector means e-commerce businesses still face challenges in adopting it, and its effectiveness remains unclear. For consumer protection, widespread public awareness of the Central Compliance Management System, proposed by e-CAB, is needed post-piloting. Smart logistics is a key component of e-commerce. While e-CAB has supported the formulation of the National Logistics Policy, the implementation should include at least a five-year tax exemption for smart logistics companies. To facilitate rural and cross-border e-commerce expansion, exemptions from postal fees for smart logistics firms, in addition to smart post offices, are necessary. Additionally, declaring the logistics sector a priority and exempting VAT on warehousing and transportation for smart logistics companies is crucial. The budget encourages cashless payments, but businesses still incur payment charges. To promote digital payments, a minimum 2% cash incentive should be provided to offset these charges. Special attention to cashless initiatives in education and healthcare is also vital for building a Smart Bangladesh. E-commerce is the fastest-growing sector, creating nearly 200,000 women and youth entrepreneurs and over 500,000 jobs in the past five years. Thus, ensuring the tax exemption for e-commerce entrepreneurs until 2031 is essential. In sales or service-based organizations, maintaining a clear chain of command and communication is crucial. When certain individuals share such information, it creates mistrust and disrupts team unity, ultimately harming the team’s overall performance. #It’s important to understand that discussing team matters outside the proper reporting line is unprofessional. Your team leader is responsible for guiding the team and evaluating your performance. If you have concerns about your leader’s ability, discuss them privately with them. Local e-commerce firms are steering clear of digital business identification (DBID) due to technical and regulatory challenges. Just 2% of e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB) members have applied for DBID, and only 14% of those have received it. Introduced on February 6, 2022, the DBID system aims to regulate the troubled e-commerce sector. Companies need this certificate from the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC) to continue operations.
