The face of Australian philanthropy is changing, and in big part due to the tech community. New research from StartGiving reveals that the tech community is reshaping how, when and why Australians give. The Australian Tech Giving Report is the first comprehensive study of personal giving in the tech sector, and the numbers speak volumes: 🌟 67.8% of tech respondents donate their money, more than double the national average (27.5%). 📈 In only a few years, tech founders have grown from 1% of total grants made by Australia's top 50 givers to 21%  🌐 The top 30 tech-rich individuals have the potential to donate $25 billion, a figure that could radically reshape our social and environmental landscape. But here’s the kicker: it’s not just the ultra-wealthy. Founders across all stages are giving earlier, giving more, and giving differently. From backing people over projects to embracing unrestricted multi-year grants, tech givers are applying startup principles to philanthropy, optimising for impact, not legacy. The conversation around AI investment is evolving fast. While it’s tempting to dismiss the buzz, the data from H1 2025 suggests that would be a mistake 👇 🔹 According to Axios, 53% of global VC funding went to AI startups (looking at PitchBook data). That includes pre-product startups like Thinking Machines, founded by OpenAI’s Mira Murati, which raised US$2b in Seed funding and counts Aussie VC Square Peg among the backers. 🔹 Even sectors traditionally slow to adopt tech are shifting gears. KPMG’s Intelligent Healthtech report found 58% of healthcare leaders are already embedding AI into their operations. 🔹 Looking closer to home, Cut Through Venture’s Q2 report outlined that AI dominated deal flow for the quarter, and cracked the top 5 funded sectors for the first time. These signals point to the fact that AI is becoming part of the operating fabric for startups across industries. But what does that mean for founders? It doesn’t mean every startup needs to be an AI company. Look out Sydney and Melbourne - the latest Cut Through Venture Queensland report reveals a powerful shift in Australia’s startup funding story: Queensland is leading the charge. In FY2025, Queensland startups raised $417M, a 37% year-on-year increase, marking the state’s strongest funding year since FY2022, making the state the fastest-growing startup investment hub in the country. But this momentum is far from surprising. Year after year Queensland churns out incredible founders doing incredible things (including Gelomics, winner of the KPMG Australia #GlobalTechInnovator award for 2024 - throwback pic below!), drawn to the state for its growing ecosystem support, high-quality facilities and investment growth. Key insights include; 🌴 Climate-tech and clean-tech led the way with $78 million across 18 deals, the highest share of any sector. 🧠 Enterprise software and AI startups are gaining traction, with Queensland’s AI ventures securing 9.2% of all deals. 💃 Queensland outperformed the national average in support for women-led and mixed-gender founding teams, with 21% of capital going to mixed-gender teams and 3% to women-led startups Queensland’s rise is a reminder that innovation knows no postcode.
