Thanks to Kirsten (KP) Patterson, David Downs and Anna Campbell from the Institute of Directors in New Zealand on their reflections and lessons for #governance #directors from the Spark AI* Mini-MBA. Here is my favorite thought on how we should use #generative AI: Treat #AI like a 'high performing graduate'. It has a good base level of knowlege, needs adult supervision in the office, needs to be fact checked, needs good context and requests, your communication will determine it's responses and it will not always perform consistently. Let me know your thoughts on this take. Here are some more of my main takeaways: We have previously talked about an extending digital divide, and we may be seeing an AI class of leaders developing, with some being left behind. As Generative AI is new to a lot of people, many feel they are 'lurkers' - interested but not engaging or not knowing how to engage. You have permission to engage with AI, there is no one that is going to give you an endorsement or permission to explore and learn. Most directors and management are learning about AI together, at the same time. There is room to be an interested learner. Being a learner is key cornerstone of ongoing good governance. There is value in using AI as a "strategy companion", moving past the gimmicky uses of AI that most people engage with. For example in the images there is a clear divide in the depth of use of AI. Understanding the protection of sensitive and private information, AI should be looked at as a significant productivity tool for organizations. David shared a matrix of different uses: - Low risk / Low effort: Email drafting and responses Basic note taking Simple task management Information retrieval - Low effort / High risk: Basic sentiment analysis on public opinion Automated document reviews - Low risk / High effort: Personalised learning and development Advanced meeting summaries Automated report generation Smart scheduling assistance - High effort / High risk: Strategic planning ideas Comprehensive personal knowledge management Enhanced decision support Intelligent virtual assistance AI can help creativity, stimulating and prompting ideas. It can also help with more mundane decisions, allowing space for more intentional thought of complex issues. AI is often thought of as a technological tool, but this can be a limiter on how we can use it, personally as leaders and professionally as organizations. You can start prompts with a caveat, 'I want facts, validate and quote the source of information, and no generated or hallucinated information'. You can also also add these sorts of directions into ChatGPT settings, have a look in the cog icon. This can be a brilliant tool for neuro diverse people, as it can take a large amount of verbal information, and summarize this. There are some things that AI will be an expert on, such as getting AI to write a draft policy on AI use. *I have used AI in this post to refer to Generative AI.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of sitting down with Sam Uffindell, Chair of the Health Select Committee, to discuss the state of digital health in New Zealand and the significant impact of the recent funding cuts. Our conversation was a critical step in highlighting how these cuts have stalled essential digital health initiatives, affecting the whole ecosystem. The setbacks not only impact current care delivery but hinder progress toward a connected, modern health system. At the Digital Health Association (DHA), our mission is to represent and amplify the voices within the digital health ecosystem. We are deeply concerned that without strategic investment, New Zealand will continue to fall behind other nations in digital health innovation and adoption. Digital health is not just an added benefit but a necessity—it supports efficient care delivery, boosts productivity, and leads to better patient outcomes. This message is one we will continue to advocate for with both industry and government stakeholders. One of the longstanding challenges in New Zealand’s healthcare system is the “postcode lottery,” where the quality and accessibility of health services depend heavily on geographical location. While this has been an ongoing issue, the recent funding cuts threaten to exacerbate it. Digital health is a critical enabler for connecting care and overcoming geographical barriers, ensuring that all New Zealanders, regardless of location, can access consistent and high-quality care. Without investment in digital solutions, the ability to bridge these gaps becomes increasingly difficult, reinforcing inequities that already exist. Sam and I also touched on the importance of building a resilient health system that can adapt to current and future challenges. Strategic investment in digital health is essential for creating an infrastructure capable of withstanding crises and evolving healthcare demands. The trade offs and opportunity costs of not funding digital in the right way are vast and hurt an already struggling system. DHA remains unwavering in our advocacy and representation of the sector and our health system. We continue to call for renewed focus on the transformative role digital health can play in shaping an equitable, connected, and efficient health system for New Zealand. Our meeting was a strong reminder of the collaborative efforts needed to ensure that digital health becomes a cornerstone of our healthcare framework, fostering sustainable growth and positive health outcomes. The Agile Dilemma: Time to Rethink Our PM Approach? Are Agile methodologies still the best way to manage projects, or is it time for a change? 📉 My latest "Beyond Project Management" article in PMI Sydney Australia monthly newsletter (https://lnkd.in/gGntz-86) highlights that recent trends suggest a "shift away" from pure Agile towards hybrid models, blending Agile with traditional methods for greater flexibility and effectiveness. As reported by Project Management Institute (PMI) #PulseOfTheProfession 2024 15th edition (https://lnkd.in/ghz_5Rxa), the adoption of Agile is declining after peaking at only 27% among project managers. While Predictive (waterfall/traditional) decline is easing, it is still close to double of Agile adoption (43.9% vs 24.6%). It is clear that the adoption of Hybrid is at the account of Agile rather than Predictive. But is hybrid truly hybrid? Or is it simply a rebranding of what seasoned project managers have been doing all along even before the hype of Agile? My argument is: 1️⃣ "Hybrid" has been a characteristic in project management since year dot. The current shift towards hybrid models highlights a fundamental truth: "effective project management is not about rigid adherence to one methodology but about selecting the right tools and techniques for the job at hand." 2️⃣ At its heart, project management is a means to an end, not an end in itself. 3️⃣ The ultimate goal is to introduce new ideas, products, and services in a well-planned and efficient manner. 4️⃣ This objective transcends any specific methodology, be it Agile, Predictive, or hybrid. 🎯 The focus should be on "achieving project goals and delivering value", rather than on the labels we attach to our methods. As a healthcare professional, the recent findings from "Australia's AI Imperative" report by John Mangan are impossible to ignore. Australia's narrowing economic base, as evidenced by its declining Economic Complexity Index (ECI), leaves us vulnerable to economic shocks. By integrating AI, we can: ✅ Boost GDP by $200 billion annually ✅ Create 150,000 jobs by 2030 ✅ Diversify our economy ✅ Drive sustainable growth The implications for our healthcare system and the nation's economic growth are profound. 🔑 Key Findings: ▪️ Without widespread AI adoption, Australia risks losing A$35.7 billion per year until 2027. ▪️ Embracing AI could boost GDP by $200 billion annually and create 150,000 jobs by 2030. ▪️ AI is projected to add US$15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. ▪️ Early adoption could secure a 26% GDP increase for Australia. ▪️ The data show an increase in GDP from 2023-2027 due to expanded AI of between 22.5% (US $395 billion) and 28% (US $486 billion), implying an average growth rate for the AI-infused economy of 4.43% to 4.82%. The problem with this article, starting with interesting stats, is that the simplistic interpretation of two types of people has a starting point and the silliness of extrapolating from that entire economic outcomes. One seems to miss the people really needed - those few that rise above the animal instinct, have broader intellectual capacity, and are neither villagers nor riverers but who listen to, understand, and can see the long-term consequences of uncontrolled vision over and above personal gain and therefore pursue a cleverer path that anticipates these, having a better sense of managing that. The fact is the 1950s saw much greater economic growth and Australia's rise including the formation of Australia's largest businesses, some of which are a shell of their former self today, despite that era being perhaps largely a "villager" era with all the regulatory control of a "socialist democracy" that is non-existent in today's excess "neoliberal world" which it would be a stretch to say is democratic in function. It's arguably the same neoliberal world that saw Argentina fall earlier from grace in the 1950s in the same manner we appear to be now doing, for example. So there is something fundamentally wrong with the simplistic nature of this interpretation of Nate Silver's thesis (assuming he has more merit ... than is being given credit - yo' dont knock the impact of a poeet!).

HiNZ Digital Health Week 2024 introduces a special “Soap Box Session” to the conference programme When: Wednesday 4th December 4.40pm to 5.15pm Where: Conference venue, Claudelands Event Centre, Hamilton, Room 5, Stream E Who: Any registered conference delegates who want to speak or sit-in to listen For the first time ever, the conference includes a soap box style session that provides a safe environment for anyone to talk about a topic or issue of their choosing. Speakers can have a rant, talk about a serious or not so serious topic, tell a joke or two, sing a song or just stand in silence at the front of the room (we’re not sure the last 2-3 topics will be popular, but nobody will be stopped if that’s their vibe!).    To make it as simple as possible the format is based on quick fire talks of 5 minutes (could be more time or less depending on how many speakers involved), there’s no slide decks and no Q&A, although good natured heckling from the audience is okay (if the facilitator allows it). There’s no recording and what’s “said in the room, stays in the room”!   Priority access to the soap box is on a first-come basis so it’s best to pre-book your 5 minutes of fame by contacting Scott Arrol, Programme Director, [email protected] to secure your slot or ask any questions. The Australian Digital Health Agency has launched an ambitious five-year roadmap, developed in partnership with the Department of Health and Aged Care and Services Australia, to significantly increase the adoption of national healthcare identifiers. This strategic plan, spanning from 2023 to 2028, aims to revolutionise health information exchanges throughout Australia by ensuring that healthcare identifiers are universally employed across all digital health projects and platforms. The roadmap delineates a series of targeted actions including legislative reforms, enhancements to services, and technical upgrades, all designed to facilitate seamless integration of healthcare identifiers. These unique numbers are essential for accurately identifying individuals, healthcare professionals, and organisations, thus minimising errors in patient data and eliminating unnecessary repetition of patient histories across the health system. Simon Cleverley, Assistant Secretary of Digital Health at the Department of Health and Aged Care, underscores the benefits: “With wider adoption of healthcare identifiers, Australians will no longer need to repeat their medical histories as they engage with different parts of the health system. The Innovation Booster Grant (IBG) is a competitive funding grant, designed to provide WA-based start-ups and small businesses with the financial boost needed to access professional skills, services or knowledge, to advance their innovative idea, project or commercial activity in Western Australia. The WA Government recognises that innovative start-ups and small businesses have great ideas, but taking these ideas and turning them into new and sustainable business opportunities with real commercial outcomes can be difficult. Funding A maximum of $40,000 grant per application is available. Recipients are required to provide a net cash co-contribution of at least 20:80 applicant to WA government funding. For example, a project of $50,000 (total cost excluding GST) would involve the recipient providing at least $10,000 themselves to supplement the (maximum) $40,000 grant. Applications can be made online at any time during the year through the publicised links. A panel of evaluators will meet at various times during the financial year, with the latest recipients being announced in due course. For eligible, chosen recipients, funds will be made available for up to 12 months after the awarding of the grant, with 75% of the funding available immediately. The remaining (25%) funds can be claimed at the end of the project, once all project work has been completed and a final acquittal report has been provided to, and approved by, JTSI. Categories of funding Innovation Booster Grants are awarded in any of the following four categories: + Research and Development + Product Development + Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property (see below) + Commercialisation Support Service (see below). Please Note: expenditure under Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property, and Commercialisation Support Services MUST involve the use of an external consultant (for example, an IP attorney). Cut-off dates Although the IBG program is open all year round, there are various ‘cut-off dates’ when the latest submissions will be downloaded, and then assessed. We can’t manage what we don’t measure and we can’t grow what we don’t fund. While the sucking sound of Aus super and VC investment going to US companies is becoming deafening, the Australian Business Growth Fund backing an ambitious cohort of innovator companies has flown under the radar. If Aus has a sovereign future, as opposed to vassal state dependence writ large and irreversible, we need 10 more commercially and globally funds to acknowledge a long forgotten asset class.

🤖 Australia Moves to Regulate AI with New Safety Standards and Mandatory Guardrails 🤖 New measures just announced to make AI safer in Australia, including the release of a Proposals Paper for Introducing Mandatory Guardrails for AI in High-Risk Settings. This paper outlines a proposed definition of high-risk AI, ten mandatory guardrails, and three regulatory options to ensure safe AI use, ranging from adapting existing frameworks to creating a new AI-specific law. Additionally, a new Voluntary AI Safety Standard is now in effect, providing businesses with practical guidance on managing high-risk AI ahead of future regulations.
