After six years, it was great to attend the CFO Magazine A/NZ Sydney CFO symposium at the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) in person today. It was great catching up with Richard McBride and meeting Karma Auden and Alena Bennett in person after so long chatting online! Some highlights: 💡Unilever is trailing four-day weeks and already operating 2+2 hybrid (2 days in the office and two days working from home), plus up to 20 days working from anywhere…hello Fiji 🇫🇯 💡Where businesses can’t operate flexible working, more challenging to recruit and have to pay more. 💡Be the person in the room who speaks up, and don’t let your dashboards obscure your insights. 💡The CFO needs to be the second-best salesperson after the CEO, and business partner shouldn’t be the goal that should be BAU. 💡It is good to see wellbeing and link to the bottom line - with the metric total cost of absence (costing one business 15% of the profit) - investing in wellbeing reduces absence and increases retention and engagement. (No surprise there, Philly Powell) 💡Cybersecurity is not a question of if you’ll be impacted. It’s when. So have a plan for dealing with it and bring the legal team in straightaway). 💡Michael Alp good presentation on the use of e-invoicing - benefits are enormous, but uptake surprisingly slow (136,000 entities registered) with 1.25m invoices per month - good to see collaboration between NZ/AU on this. 💡Finally, when presenting to the board, don’t be the smartest person in the room - simplify so that everyone understands what you’re presenting. #cfosymposium #sydney #icc

Takeaways: According to recent statistics, over 5.5 million Australians, which is 21.4% of the population, live with a disability, showing a 3.7% increase from 2018. This rise is largely attributed to Australia's aging population. Recent data shows a significant increase in disability rates among individuals under 24, surpassing rates for adults aged 25-44 for the first time. This rise is due to better recognition and diagnosis of disabilities. The higher prevalence may strain the NDIS over time. Additionally, the percentage of primary carers with disabilities has increased notably, indicating a growing trend of carers managing their own health challenges. Great article on The Australian Financial Review that recognises the value of strategic partnerships across Universities and industry. Thank you to Prof Simon Wilkie for the vote of confidence in the Oracle partnership, how it can improve students’ employability and social impact by giving them skills that are directly transferable to the workplace.
